Will there be HS FB in Utah this year?

Post by ViAggie » July 15th, 2020, 9:05 am

Two school districts down here in Cali have already said no on-campus classes this fall, thus I doubt they will have a "season" this year (LA and San Diego). Orange County said it's School Districts can offer on-campus classes this year, but there are several SD's in the OC and many might vote against opening. Interesting...

The UHSAA already voted in favor of fall sports and Herbert seems eager to open school so for now I’d say yes but who knows how things will look in a month.

If there is football being played in Utah high schools this fall, you may see a large influx in out of state transfers coming in to live with a distant family member or family friend from states that are not going to allow football to be played. This may not sit well with a lot of people in the state.

Especially if it could tip the balance for schools that aren't usually FB powerhouses. I doubt it though....

That hadn't occurred to me. Interesting theory.

That would make sense. Losing a year in high school is a major deal. College isn't quite as bad because they won't take away a year of eligibility over this (and even if they would, you could use your redshirt year) High School, you can't exactly redshirt and play a year after you graduate. There are so many players that need a good year to get a scholarship. I could definitely see an influx of kids going to states that are allowing high school football from places where they don't.

California not having high school football would be an even bigger deal than most considering how many top rated recruits come out of that state.

The top rated recruits have nothing to worry about. It's the fringe/under the radar guys that need this season.

Orange areas, primarily Salt Lake, have to be much more in doubt that those in yellow or green. As of now with the UHSAA moving forward with fall sports they're on for now but outbreaks and status changes could take it away at any time.

I highly doubt anyone many players would move here from out of state just to play football and would be able to become eligible and join a team. I think California is currently on lockdown and not allowing travel out of the state.

True, that is why I said losing a year in high school is a major deal since many players need a good year to get a scholarship.

It really is. I say we all lie about our age and say we are a year younger.

This sure would be a great year for people in West Jordan to be charitable towards football players from out of state and let them move in with them! Then this would be the year that West Jordan and/or Copper Hills compete with Herriman and Bingham. Of course, the people would have to set one stipulation of moving in that they GO TO West Jordan or Copper Hills like they are supposed to, assuming it's not families that let their OWN KIDS go to Bingham when they are supposed to go to West Jordan or Copper Hills!

California is delaying high school football until at least December 2020 or January 2021. That could have some domino effect but likely wouldn't impact Utah.

No HSFB in Cali until December: https://www.pe.com/2020/07/20/cif-state ... -december/
Several top recruits in California have already announced that they will forgo their delayed senior season and enroll early in college.

UHSAA reiterated after meeting yesterday that fall sports are on. They also addressed potential transfers from California and Nevada saying that unless a very limited exception applies, there must be a full family move evidenced by termination of a lease or sale of a home to be eligible to play in Utah.

Listened to a interview that Riley Jensen had a couple of days ago on the zone. He said that there are a number of Califorinia preps that have or considering moving to Utah to play football. Some would play here in the fall and then go back to California for Spring Ball. With work from home becoming more common. Families are free to move where they want.
