I think the most shocking item I saw in the Chris Murray Article was the lack of royalties, licensing and advertising. This is all on the Athletics Department. If people in the Athletic Department see the Maverick deal and no sponsored events at timeouts before the conference season begins I could understand why they would be worried.

Royalties/licensing/advertising

1. Colorado State, $6,386,625
2. Boise State, $6,194,533
3. UNLV, $5,843,034
4. Fresno State, $3,116,630
5. Hawaii, $3,067,737
6. San Diego State, $2,738,648
7. Nevada, $2,411,325
8. Wyoming, $2,386,677
9. New Mexico, $1,882,975
10. San Jose State, $662,616
11. Utah State, $452,209

I have heard first hand how people in the athletic department don’t like the new AD. She doesn’t understand how things work in Cache Valley, thinks she is smarter than everyone else. Is too big time.
This is the first time I've seen it posted anywhere, but FWIW I've heard the exact same thing from multiple close acquaintances who work in different departments within our AD. The common sentiment seems to be that she's charging forward and trying to do things exactly as they were done at Ohio State, but for obvious reasons that's not always possible or what's best.

I think an outside perspective is good, and things shouldn't be done a certain way just because they've always been done that way. But I do worry that she may not understand some of the realities of being at a mid-major school with low-mid-major resources.
I have heard people in the department compare her to Jana Doggett.
I mean... They are both female... so, there's that.

I have heard that every time I have switched jobs to a new company, "that won't work here, you don't understand us or the company, don't fix was not broken, we are doing just fine BAH, BAH, BAH and in the end it does work and they come back and say I am glad we tried something new. People hate to change and try new things, this will never change you have to make them do it (in the right way). Based on the numbers something or people need to change if we want to complete with those in the MW, plain and simple.

This! It's not just a Cache Valley issue either.

I am a faculty member at another R1 university. We just got done with a faculty search, one of the finalists has a more impressive resume than every other faculty member, the other two are about to finished their PhDs and not very impressive rookies at that. Half of the department voted against the guy that will be best for the department because they are worried that he will make them look bad, comparative. Luckily the dean broke the tie and hired the right guy.

The length that people will go to maintain the status quo is amazing sometimes.

We’ve had a Jerry Bovee for a few years now in a position of power. NOTHING is stopping him from cultivating relationships and raising money from the people around the valley who look, sound, and worship like him.

He. Has. Never. Done. It.

I wish our current athletic director great success during her time captaining the ship.

Hopefully she gets the ball rolling on:

A new indoor football facility

A new basketball arena and basketball practice facility (Estes is great as a stand-alone volleyball facility)

A new south end zone administrative facility

“The Fieldhouse” on campus is finally converted into a stand-alone T&F facility

An increased operating budget

The above items are what is needed to get us to the top of the pecking order in the Mountain West.

If Bovee can use his “one of us” connections to get a bunch of high dollar valley folks to make this a reality, give him the job when it opens again in 5-7 years. If he can’t, why even bring his name up for the job again? Leon Jackson is on deck.

FatAg out for another 2 years

I think you have the bold part backwards. The Estes is a good basketball practice facility. What we need is a new arena built with hosting volleyball, (and maybe gymnastics and women's basketball) in mind. The Estes was built as a practice facility and was not built to host games.

Give me a new arena with 3500- 4500 seats that does not feel like a high school gymnasium.

I would remove a new south end zone and a new indoor facility and a new basketball practice facility.

I think an improved basketball arena and high operating budget are #1 and #1a

We don't have a hockey team. There is a club team that is allowed to use the Utah State name and logo, but we do not have a hockey team.

I love USU hockey, and I've been a big supporter for a while. I went to two games last week, in fact. But they're not a Utah State sponsored team, nor should they be. Financially, it just doesn't make any sense.

They've got a good thing going separate of the AD.

Intercollegiate club sports teams are absolutely sponsored by USU, just not through the AD or the NCAA. So yes, USU has a hockey team, a baseball team, a men's volleyball team, and other teams as well. And those student-athletes do it without the additional benefits that scholarship players receive, like tutors, strength and conditioning support, etc.

When I played volleyball, the primary difference between us and NCAA players had very little to do with skill but about four inches in height. And considering the success of the hockey and baseball teams, I would venture the skill difference between those players and most NCAA players is usually marginal.

Give me a new arena with 3500- 4500 seats that does not feel like a high school gymnasium.
Then convert it into an ice rink and let the hockey team play there.
We don't have a hockey team. There is a club team that is allowed to use the Utah State name and logo, but we do not have a hockey team.
So USU "doesn't have a hockey team" by your argument, means that USU couldn't have a rink on campus to provide their non team a place to play with easier access to the students. That would just be horrible for all those non students that don't go to their schools hockey games.

Title nine combined with the number of scholarships given for football make it nearly impossible for a school to support many other men's sports if they have a football team. This greatly limits the scholarship opportunities for boys who excel at sports that aren't football or basketball.

I have little doubt that the talent level of many men's club players is high - they just have fewer options. What they do to keep playing is impressive.

I also am now wondering who I was representing when I wore the USrare on my chest. I guess I was lucky enough that school allowed it. I only paid tuition and team fees, plus equipment to play for such a school, let alone fought for said school

I had offers to NCAA div 3 teams, chose USU over it. A large school with big sports sounded alot better to me than a school of 3500 in a town of 5000.

Forgive me, I should have phrased that better. USU Athletics does not have a hockey team. Thus, converting USU Athletics facilities to accommodate a hockey team, which they do not have, is asinine.

Again, I love USU hockey. But it’s not part of the athletics department, nor should it be.

A lot of universities that only have club sports have rinks on campus. Colorado is one of them. We played there every year. San Jose, their rink is right across from the football stadium. ( I don't think it's actually associated with the school) Eastern Washington built a rink on campus for their club team. Just because it isn't NCAA doesn't mean the school can't support it.

What was your goal in this attempt to phrase it better? Are you trying to be more diplomatic? Less offensive? Do you think you were successful?
Why shouldn't it be? And if the answer is that the sport isn't profitable, then do you want to eliminate all scholarship sports that aren't profitable? USU would have many sports if we do that.

Once again, I was simply stating that it’s absurd to think that USU Athletics would take a building that was built for and is used for USU Athletics teams and transform it into a building used for a team that has nothing to do with USU Athletics.

And no, I don’t think we should eliminate non-profitable sports because I would like for us to remain Division I and we already have the bare minimum. I also would not like for us to add another sport, especially one that would be as expensive to add as hockey.

Yeah, I don't think this is that controversial. The university should not be putting millions of dollars into a club sport.

I would still love for the to make hockey a university sanctioned sport though...

That’s cool, and I agree it would be a lot of fun.

And to someone’s earlier point, it would also be cool if the school wanted to build a facility for them. But USU and USU Athletics are separate entities.

It’s almost so absurd that you’d have to be crazy to believe it if someone suggested it…

Looks like things are going great in the AD.

I have zero knowledge about what Wade's situation is, but I can't imagine this is something you want to see from someone who has worked in the department for over a decade.

I see two sides. Certainly don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, but donating money doesn’t entitle your children to a job if you don’t include the strings in the donation. Do you really want have to keep someone who’s bad at their job just because their family gave the an institution a lot of money.

Disclaimer* I don’t know if this is someone else at the University or completely unrelated. This could be him complaining on behalf of a friend that’s unable to vent publicly. I have zero sources.

I suppose that’s true. I’ve never met Wade and again have no knowledge of this situation, I just assumed it was about his employer.

I have no context, but on the surface that reads like a classic "Don't you know who I am!" situation. No a great look for Mr. Denniston.

At least there were a few (I can't express myself without swearing) given in that circumstance. Imagine how it would feel if two (I can't express myself without swearing) weren't given. That is how we, the unconnected, live in the workplace.
