Anybody you want LESS to start WS?

Post by AGinNEIowa » October 29th, 2022, 7:37 am

Is there any pitcher in the history of MLB that you want to start a WS game for your team than Justin Verlander?
What is he now, 0-6 as a starter with 6+ ERA?

He even had a 5 run lead in this one and couldn't hold it.

That is a tough batting order to face in Philly, though. Schwarber, Hoskins, Realmuto, Harper, and Castellanos is a formidable first 5.

He barely got out of the inning when he gave up 3 runs. Never should have come back out the next inning. I was at dinner, it was on in the background, really surprised when I looked up again and he had just given up 2 more runs.

sorry 918 - This year, I haven't followed much baseball outside of occasional standings checks for A's and Giants records.
I was surprised that he was still losing games in the WS like he did to the Giants a decade ago

Yeah, weird. He’s a shoo-in for Cy Young this year - at 39, after Tommy John surgery. I’ll go against the CW: I’d take him in Game 7 just because he’s way overdue.

He’d have won Game 1 if he hasn’t muffed that liner in the fourth - instead of an inning ending DP (runner on first was going), he just got the one out, and the Phils scored three. A play he makes 95% of the time.

He just underperforms his regular season so badly, I'd almost call him Kershaw - but he finally broke through.
Maybe Verlander will do so this series... :noidea:

Phillies are just teeing off on McCullers. 5 home runs so far tonight to chase him. Still just the bottom of the fifth. This is a tough lineup in Philly.

Dusty trusts his veterans to a fault. Stuck with Mancini far too long. Should have pulled both Verlander and McCullers two innings earlier -- hell, he has three starters (Garcia, Urquidy, Brown) in the bullpen for such a situation, and five quality relief arms behind them. Astros are clearly being outmanaged.

As an O's fan, I would like to see Trey Mancini do well. He was a very popular figure in Baltimore with a compelling story fighting colon cancer and sitting out an entire year. His relationship with Mo Gaba was also great feel good story off the field:

He's had a rough post session, though.

Isn't baseball a funny game? The Phillies hit 5 homeruns last night and get no-hit tonight.

Oh, us too! He has such a great story, and he’s been a stand up Astro. But he is completely out of rhythm right now. I’m hoping he has a walk-off PH homer in the 13th inning of Game 6!!

Astros pitching was tough last night. The starter, Javier, was throwing high fastballs that were unhittable.

These videos they have now where they superimpose two pitches on top of each other to show you in slow motion the release point of the pitch (which is usually the same point) and the movement of the balls as they travels to the catcher are awesome. It really shows you how impossible it is to hit a baseball.

Tonight is going to be an epic game! Can Verlander pitch a gem, redeem himself, and keep the Phillies bats at bay, or will the Phillies be able to do the previously unthinkable and beat Cy Young shoo-in Verlander TWICE in the same series?

As an Astros fan, I love the idea of Game 5 - Verlander, Game 6 - Framber, and Game 7 - Javier.

If... if... if... Verlander can keep the Phillies bats at bay for the first 3-4 innings, will this be the beginning of the end of Philly's hot streak? Or will the outcome of this game and this series (whatever it may be) be totally unpredictable?

After four games, the series is tied at 2-2, 15 runs to 15 runs. What a great series!!

It took Verlander two pitches to give up that 1-0 lead.

This on the heels of a no-hitter. Verlander is facing abbey Phillies.

It's tough to have the TV cameras keep showing Kate Uptain in the stands at these games.

Great win for the Astros. Alvarez with a huge 450 foot blast. That pitching staff in Houston -- wow!!

Have to feel happy for Dusty Baker. A class guy if there ever was one.

Our man Mancini never quite came around offensively, but was stellar at 1B when Yuli went down, and had the play of the Series (for one inning ;) ) that kept the Phils at 1 instead of 2 (or probably 3), allowing Yordan's moonshot to be enough to win it. Don't know if we'll see him back in the H, but loved having him here, and it couldn't be more obvious why you guys love him.
