Re: Bean and the Clippers
Sometimes you see this in summer league, depending on the team. The Jazz have been known to start different guys each game and give meaningful minutes to different guys each game. Let's hope that's the case for Bean's sake.

If they were serious about considering him for a contract, I think he'd get more time.

Yep. I guess we'll see. Hopefully he's got some feelers out in Europe because I think he could thrive out there.brownjeans wrote: ↑July 11th, 2022, 2:35 pmIf they were serious about considering him for a contract, I think he'd get more time.

The thing that bugs me the most is that the Jazz skipped on having Sam Merrill, Queta, and Bean. How many more Aggie fans would watch the Jazz if the Jazz got any of those players

Re: Bean and the Clippers
Honestly, probably close to none. Any Aggie fans that would care probably already watch the Jazz. And the rest of us would probably look at the box score more often.
If an NBA team has to draft a local to get local fan support they have bigger issues than the draft. In fact I don't think I can think of a worse reason to draft a player.
Also, if local fan support was an issue and if they could add a local player to get that support it would probably be better to sign jimmer. Luckily for the jazz they pretend to care about winning more than that.
Also if Ryan Smith and Danny ainge are not drafting BYU players don't get so upset that they are not drafting usu players. Not everything is worth getting offended at.

I told Justin that if the Jazz came calling and he had other offers, pass on the Jazz. They are a mess.

Every team is a mess right now. With the exception of the warriors, grizzlies, heat, bucks and some other teams toward the top. I think the clippers are more of a mess than the jazz
Re: Bean and the Clippers
How so? They have the deepest lineup in the NBA going into next year. Their 2nd unit would make a competitive 1st team. Had Leonard not got hurt against the Jazz they very well could have won a championship. If Paul didn’t get COVID during the play-in they very likely make the playoffs last season when their two best players played a total of 36 games. They have one of the best coaches in the league. They have the best and wealthiest owner in the league. If what you mean by “mess” is bad luck, I could buy that. If not, please elaborate.Stockypoo2212 wrote: ↑July 11th, 2022, 7:39 pmEvery team is a mess right now. With the exception of the warriors, grizzlies, heat, bucks and some other teams toward the top. Re: Bean and the Clippers
You can bet on it again that George and kawhi won't play more than half the games again this year. They have a deep lineup but they won't get anywhere without those two. They are putting so much money to these guys who play half the games they should. And they are a mess because of it. Wall, George and kawhi are all great players but it comes at a cost. I think wall is a huge cancer in the locker room too so watch out for that this year1888Aggie wrote: ↑July 11th, 2022, 7:54 pmHow so? They have the deepest lineup in the NBA going into next year. Re: Bean and the Clippers
As a Jazz season ticket holder, if we’re loading up the bottom of our roster with fringe nba guys just to keep local college fanbases happy then I’d watch the Jazz less not more. Queta was probably worth a pick if they had it but Merrill and Bean are fringe nba guys at best. The Jazz have helped Aggies out before that weren’t nba caliber. Spencer butterfield was on their summer league team and had no chance at the nba.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑July 11th, 2022, 7:15 pmHonestly, probably close to none. The NBA is a business, pure and simple. Adrian Dantley taught this to Karl Malone when he was a rookie and did the same for Joe Dumars in Detroit. Danny Ainge, of the same generation, would have learned this from one of the best, Red Auerbach, during his time with the Celtics.
Winning brings fans and attention = revenues and profits. Gimmicks, like drafting a local college star, is just that, a gimmick.
Just like in the NFL, if you are good enough, the league will find you. If not, you go to Europe. Not a bad fall-back career either.

I wonder how performance in 1-2 summer league games (small sample size) influences his chances vs what he does during weeks of scrimmages/practices? Great performance in the games could increase potential interest from other teams.Winning Team wrote: ↑July 12th, 2022, 5:50 pmHe should get time to tonight. Re: Bean and the Clippers
I’m wondering if he has some kind of injury that kept him out of the lineup. The ESPN broadcast began with Bean being listed as a starter. The announcers also mentioned that. But when they took the court, he stayed on the bench - and he is still there with three minutes to play.smfdaggie wrote: ↑July 12th, 2022, 10:18 pmLooks like you got bad information.Winning Team wrote: ↑July 12th, 2022, 5:50 pmHe should get time to tonight. If it's gonna happen, Bean is going to have to take the Joe Ingles/Royce O'Neale path: play well in Europe and be lucky enough that the right NBA team offers you a chance in a couple years.

Probably 6. The Venn Diagram of Aggie BBall fans and their NBA rooting interest is a circle.SLB wrote:The thing that bugs me the most is that the Jazz skipped on having Sam Merrill, Queta, and Bean. How many more Aggie fans would watch the Jazz if the Jazz got any of those players
I’ll wait for you to point out the two people outside of the circle.

6 rebounds in 17 minutes is insane. They say that rebounding is one of the most translatable skills

Bean showed real talent with us with the work effort to go along with it. Merrill, Queta, and Bean were definitely NBA level players.

I am happy for him. I honestly believe if he is given a chance he can carve a small niche. Rebounding and effort are something he will always give. His attitude is second to none and he would be a great locker room guy.

He probably would’ve had more assists last night if the shots were falling for LA. He was moving the ball really well last night!

Bean is one of the rare players that can really shoot, pass, and rebound, and the joke was Bean was the king of the hockey assist.VegasBornAggie wrote: ↑July 14th, 2022, 9:54 amHe probably would’ve had more assists last night if the shots were falling for LA. Re: Bean and the Clippers
In the NBA of the 80's and 90's, Bean would almost be a lock to stick as someone who could play tough defense, rebound, and not be an offensive liability.
Not sure if he fits today as everyone seems to want 6'9 guys who shoot from thirty feet. Defense and hard-nosed rebounding are afterthoughts. Then again, I haven't watched a full NBA game in half a decade so what do I know?

Man, I miss the era when Kevin McHale could clothesline Kurt Rambis and it was only called as a common foul. No technical, no ejection, no suspension for McHale. As much as I hated that that one play swung the series, it was a great era to watch the NBA. It was so fun to watch the tough defense and battling that took place all over the floor where the game didn't stop a couple of times every minute because of some pansy ticky-tack non-foul foul call from the defensive player puffing too hard and blowing over the offensive player 25 feet from the basket.
And if Bean played back in those days, I would expect him to play every bit as dirty as Danny Ainge with a similar innocent Mormon-boy look. (I would hate Bean only slightly less as much as Ainge if he also played for the Celtics. The USU tie would only be the only thing elevating him above Ainge due to Ainge's yBu status.)

I haven’t seen anything from Bean that makes me think he would play dirty in any era. He hustles and gives a lot of effort with a great attitude. I don’t see the correlation to Ainge.bwcrc wrote: ↑July 14th, 2022, 7:53 pmI'm not sure there has been a real NBA game in at least that long.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑July 14th, 2022, 7:11 pmIn the NBA of the 80's and 90's, Bean would almost be a lock to stick as someone who could play tough defense, rebound, and not be an offensive liability.

Re: Bean and the Clippers
I agree 100%. That wasn't considered dirty play either, it was gritty, hardnosed basketball. Ninety five percent of the players weren't going to make a lifetime's worth of money in two or three years so they had to fight and scratch to stay in the league as long as they could, knowing that losing meant getting replaced.bwcrc wrote: ↑July 14th, 2022, 7:53 pmI'm not sure there has been a real NBA game in at least that long.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑July 14th, 2022, 7:11 pmIn the NBA of the 80's and 90's, Bean would almost be a lock to stick as someone who could play tough defense, rebound, and not be an offensive liability.

John Stockton talks about how much different it is today. Steph Curry dances around, weaving the ball between his legs and then shooting from thirty feet where no one is allowed to touch him, lest there be a foul called. In Stockton's day, the defender was hand-checking him (grabbing, holding) as soon as he crossed half-court.

And he had two rebounds in three minutes in his other game. That’s eight in 20 minutes.
I don’t think most players are giving a high priority to rebounding in these summer league games.

Re: Bean and the Clippers
And the 12-man roster was the 12-man roster. No 3 inactive dudes sitting at the end of the bench and sure as hell no G-League. Does anybody remember the Continental Basketball Association? Phil Jackson earned his stripes there as coach of the Albany Patroons. And NO I didn't have to Google that.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑July 15th, 2022, 7:55 amI agree 100%.
