Re: Us vs. byu
Other than it is a game that generates a lot of interest and is always well attended I have no problem taking a break from the series for a while. Utah did the same thing and now BYU is doing the exact same thing. It was a good game for both teams
very little travel costs, local game, a lot of times on conference weekend etc. This opens up an opportunity to get some home/home agreements with some group of 5 teams.
I would love to do some home/home with the following teams. Memphis, App State, Marshall, UTSA, Louisiana, SMU etc.

Re: Us vs. byu
As I’ve said before we don’t need BYU anymore especially if it’s on unfavorable terms. We can sign other P5 programs 1:1 or a 1:1 plus an away money game in more interesting destinations.

Re: Us vs. byu
They join in 2023. The game at Provo this September will be the last game that is scheduled. The remaining 4 games on the contract from 2023 to 2026 were cancelled. Apparently there was wording in it they could back out due to conference affiliation.

Looks like they are dumping a lot of games so they can fit in their Big12 schedule.
I think there will be future games schedules between USU and BYU. But who knows how often?

The only concern in the near future is who will Hartwell schedule for a home game in 2023 since that was BYU home year. I hope he is able to get a decent team under contract for a home/home.Tetonkatest wrote: ↑May 12th, 2022, 11:45 amLooks like they are dumping a lot of games so they can fit in their Big12 schedule.

Well looks like we will just have to beat the crap out of them this year so we can keep the Wagon Wheel for the "foreseeable future." Then never schedule them again.

Re: Us vs. byu
I’ll miss playing them, just like the Utes. Hate both schools and their fan bases. No reason to pretend like we don’t enjoy in-state rivalry games. Stupid to see what their athletic directors have done to ruin these rivalries.
There’s a talent discrepancy with us and the Utes, but nothing close to other states P5s vs G5s.

Re: Us vs. byu
With regard to scheduling I give BYU more of a pass, as they have to shed a lot of scheduled games in order to fit their Big12 schedule. But they usually schedule USU in basketball and football.BleedAggieBlue0 wrote: ↑May 12th, 2022, 11:55 amI’ll miss playing them, just like the Utes. Hate both schools and their fan bases. Utah only cancelled playing USU after they lost in football and basketball. They have refused to ever play a game in Logan ever again.

Re: Us vs. byu
I’m honestly really bummed out. Was bummed out when Utah left the schedule too. Maybe some of you disagree, but I enjoy playing teams that I hate. Rivalries is what makes college sports so unique.
And with that, who are we possibly going to add to our home non-conference schedule that would draw close to the amount attention as BYU coming to town? We gonna get NMSU or UConn instead now as a replacement or something? With the rare exceptions of Washington State (which got cancelled) and then Oregon in 2026 or something, we don’t get good non-conference home games.

Yeah we are pretty much hosed in 2023. Most decent teama already have their 2023 schedule finalized. My guess is we will have the pleasure of hosting nmsu or Liberty. ...Aggie84025 wrote: ↑May 12th, 2022, 11:48 amThe only concern in the near future is who will Hartwell schedule for a home game in 2023 since that was BYU home year. It does look like Marshall has an opening for an away game that weekend in 2023. I would be cool with that.

Re: Us vs. byu
How many teams have an opening on their schedule in 2023 that can be filled with an away game as the first game of a home and home. That’s got to be a very short list. I think Hartwell is smart enough to not repeat the mistake of scheduling a 2-1 with a team like Wake Forest the last time we had a similar situation. I don’t care about P5 or G5 or UMass, I just want a home and home agreement.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑May 12th, 2022, 11:48 amThe only concern in the near future is who will Hartwell schedule for a home game in 2023 since that was BYU home year. Re: Us vs. byu
Exactly just get any G5 on the schedule that is willing to start the series as the away team next year. Hartwell overall has done a good job scheduling and am confident he will make something work. The last thing you can do is only have 5 home games next year.Full wrote: ↑May 12th, 2022, 12:24 pmHow many teams have an opening on their schedule in 2023 that can be filled with an away game as the first game of a home and home. The most annoying thing (to me) is that we don't get one cent to help cover the costs of getting a new schedule in place, BYU just gets to walk away without paying anything. :-(

This is actually sad because it was that last Aggies vs Utah or BYU thing. There is something great about in-state games, but I will guess that we will go to the PAC 12 down the road.

I am ambivalent about this. I like playing the game. But I also would like new and exciting opponents at MOFAMS and new and exciting locales to visit for road games. We are fortunate to now have a successful football program that doesn't need BYU financially or competitively.
This would have been a much bigger deal 10-12 years ago, but today -- multiple bowl trophies and a conference championship trophy later -- the landscape is very different.

Re: Us vs. byu
This scheduling cancellation and replacement development will take some time to sort out and work through. I wouldn't expect a stunning game schedule upgrade any time soon, especially with the historically our game day attendance at the Mav.
We've had decades to address the pathetic game day attendance and, as an institution, and done nothing to resolve the situation.
Following the Utah series cancellation we should have been motivated to do something beyond raising game day and season ticket pricing, BUT WE HAVE FAILED.

Re: Us vs. byu
In some ways I feel like we missed the boat on ever having super solid attendance. We didn't develop a winning tradition during the years when not every game was on live TV and in HD, so we never really built up a sizable, devoted fan base that grew up going to games. Now it's so easy to just watch on TV even for people who are very invested in the program.NavyBlueAggie wrote: ↑May 12th, 2022, 1:12 pmThis scheduling cancellation and replacement development will take some time to sort out and work through. I am team "make the stadium nicer but not necessarily bigger" -- just don't think there will ever be a need for more capacity at MOFAMS unless Logan quadruples in size.

Re: Us vs. byu
I predict that at first BYU will be on their best behavior with the Big 12... but then within the first 3-5 years every school in the Big 12 will despise them. It seems to happen with everyone BYU plays.Mr. Sneelock wrote: ↑May 12th, 2022, 12:42 pmI honestly don't even care. Seriously. BYU is nothing but trouble. BYU thinks it's because everyone is jealous of them. The proverbial "they just hate me because they can't date me"
But that doesn't make sense as most of the schools, especially schools outside of Utah have had nothing to be jealous of when they stopped liking BYU.

Us vs. byu
From what I can glean, these teams may be looking to fill a 2023 road game.
Kansas
Marshall
SMU
Tulane
UCF
MTSU
Liberty
Army
NMSU
GT, Miami, and Virginia could potentially be looking as well but unlikely to agree to a home/home with us.
I’d be all for a home/home with Kansas. Winnable P5 game and a Nice 3.5 hours from me.
