Shulga got 11 points
That is more than Eytle-Rock and Miller.
He got 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist.

He also had approximately 100 fewer passes than RJ or Miller.

Re: Shulga got 11 points
I'd love to see him push Eytle-Rock for minutes. Without poring over game film, he seemed to struggle a little defensively as he got blown by a couple of times.

Shulga went for and got his in garbage time today. It is a benefit for the Aggies that he did.

I feel Jones and Shulga are the charge and steal pair on defense.sam tingey wrote: ↑November 19th, 2021, 12:08 pmShulga went for and got his in garbage time today. It is a benefit for the Aggies that he did.

Shulga got 11 points
Yes. He gave up a lot of easy baskets. That needs to improve. He also got blocked like 3 times. He needs to finish better to get those stats against starters and starters who haven’t just got beaten like a drum and are extremely discouraged and not playing hard any more. Context matters.dirtnsnow wrote:I'd love to see him push Eytle-Rock for minutes. Without poring over game film, he seemed to struggle a little defensively as he got blown by a couple of times.
That said, he played hard and the experience will pay off down the road. Hamoda as well. The deeper we can go will only benefit the Aggies.

Re: Shulga got 11 points
It was good to see Shulga get some minutes. Needs to play a little better on defense, but we are going to need him to be able to give 6-8 solid minutes per game.

Re: Shulga got 11 points
I'm not going to dispute any of that, I will just point out that Eytle-Rock forces the issue as well, and shulga seems like the better offensive option to my untrained eye. If we are choosing between two guards who force it too much, I'll go with the better shooter. Ideally, the hero ball gets coached out of them both and we can see how they can contribute within the system.scotlandog wrote: ↑November 19th, 2021, 12:10 pmYes. He gave up a lot of easy baskets. Re: Shulga got 11 points
Yeah fair point. They mentioned once that coach said RJ starts slow in the season so I’m hoping that’s true and we start to see more from him. I think RJ did have his best game today and played more within himself. Hopefully that continues. I think RJ and Shulga are both big strong guards and can be an asset for us. I think Hamoda can be the most athletic of the group and can be another asset for us. It’s good to have blowout type of games and get them all experience. Still waiting to see something from Thelisson as well. Plus we still have Bairstow when he comes back. Good times.dirtnsnow wrote:I'm not going to dispute any of that, I will just point out that Eytle-Rock forces the issue as well, and shulga seems like the better offensive option to my untrained eye. Re: Shulga got 11 points
RJ's role is to force the issue. He's one of our only players that can penetrate and has the body to finish (one sandwich away from fat) at the rim. He's just not finishing strong enough. We've got guys to spread the floor, so we need guys like Jones and RJ who can take advantage of the spacing.

Re: Shulga got 11 points
IMO the “starting slow” explanation is just an excuse for poor play. Is Bean dominating because he “starts fast” but will regress shortly? RJ looks slow. He dribbles a lot with no real intent. He has not proven he has an outside shot and seems incapable of finishing at the basket. Hopefully Bairstow returns and provides something at the 2-spot. Otherwise Shulga should be given the starting spot.scotlandog wrote: ↑November 19th, 2021, 12:25 pmYeah fair point. Calling someone fat is not politically correct. He might be somewhere between healthy and husky but is far from fluffy.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑November 19th, 2021, 12:44 pmRJ's role is to force the issue. Did I say he was fat? Technically I'm one affair way from being divorced, but that doesn't make me divorced.bwcrc wrote: ↑November 19th, 2021, 12:51 pmCalling someone fat is not politically correct. I'm not talking about driving, I'm talking about taking ill advised shots that are blocked or otherwise result in a turnover. He needs to recognize when the shot is there and when it's not.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑November 19th, 2021, 12:44 pmRJ's role is to force the issue. Shulgas reverse layup was amazing. The English he put on the ball to get that to drop was a thing or beauty.

Remember rj was a first time all conference player last year. He had some great stuff out there 40% from 3. He just hasn't found his place in our team yet.dirtnsnow wrote: ↑November 19th, 2021, 12:55 pmI'm not talking about driving, I'm talking about taking ill advised shots that are blocked or otherwise result in a turnover. That's what I'm hoping, too. I don't know these guys on a personal level, but sometimes a little competition for minutes will light a fire.AggieFanNate wrote: ↑November 19th, 2021, 1:02 pmRemember rj was a first time all conference player last year. Re: Shulga got 11 points
He is getting a little more comfortable out there. On his drives if there is nothing there he is doing a better job at stopping and passing to someone versus bullying his way and either getting it blocked or turning it over. We need RJ to play well because we can't expect Bean to score over 20 a night and we need another scoring threat. If RJ can give us 8 points a game it will be huge. I think he will get there.AggieFanNate wrote: ↑November 19th, 2021, 1:02 pmRemember rj was a first time all conference player last year. He had some great stuff out there 40% from 3. RJ will be fine. If anyone knows his capabilities well it's coach Odom. I trust the coach completely on this one.

Where does Barristow fit in now? Maybe he takes minutes from Ashworth and Miller?

Exactly what I was going to say. If Coach Odom says he typically starts off slow, I have no idea what he means, but I'll trust it's accurate.AggieFBObsession wrote: ↑November 19th, 2021, 1:05 pmRJ will be fine. Re: Shulga got 11 points
As a couch coach, RJ needs some post up with the others 4 high so he has less tall timber by the basket and get his confidence up on post up moves.

I'm going to have to watch videobot. I mean, did he pass the ball on purpose or dribble off his foot or hit it with his knee and it went to a teammate who scored?

Re: Shulga got 11 points
He had a nice drive to the side of the post but was stopped by the defender, rather than force anything he passed to a cutting bean who caught the nice pass at the free throw line for a wide open jump shot.brownjeans wrote: ↑November 19th, 2021, 2:00 pmI'm going to have to watch videobot. Re: Shulga got 11 points
Shulga has great potential but needs better decision making at times (ie too much hero ball).
I imagine he will get his feet under him with more minutes.
Zapata looked like a true freshman.

He was the opposite last year. He would pass up so many open looks it was frustrating. Today felt like he knew it was garbage time and he wanted to earn PT. I think the real Shulga is somewhere in the middle.

I believe that Connor Gillis should have the green light to jack up 20 3's per game. He's shooting 100% and don't give me that BS about "lies, damn lies, and statistics."

Re: Shulga got 11 points
The hero ball was less than impressive. There are four other dudes on the court with him. Hero ball won't earn him more minutes. Zee didn't score but was much more impressive with his minutes.
