You can tell he idolizes Kobe. That move is a bit Kobe-esque. Will be exciting to watch him develop. We haven’t had athleticism like his on the wing for a while.

I'm being told that he is way more athletic than many of us realize.

This is part of why I made that depth chart thread. I figured much of team is up in the air because there is a lot basketball needs to play out before and during the season to figure where the chips fall.

I think he'll redshirt this season, mainly because he is really skinny. He needs some playing weight put on him.

I thought redshirts were a thing of the past with the free movement in and out of the transfer portal. It's rare that a kid stays at the same school for 4 (or 5) years any more. Why use a scholarship on a kid and then put a redshirt on him so he can transfer out for his productive final year or two?

I wonder if international players might be easier to hold on to. It seems they may be more grateful for the opportunity, are unable to take advantage of NIL (under the current rule), and would probably have some headaches with their visa to transfer schools. No idea, just a thought.

I know from my time at USU, it was a pain just to change my major with my visa stuff. I couldn't imagine transferring.

Would do him well to put on some weight and I think we have some players in front of him anyway. Zee is 6'7" 170 lbs. Compare that to Derrick Alston who was 6'8" 170lbs entering his RS Freshman season. He didn't contribute much that year but his RS Sophomore year he was honorable mention all conference and was 6'9" 185, so still pretty skinny. I think he only ever got up to about 190 lbs for his RS senior season. If we sorely miss athleticism on the court it may not hurt to let Zee play. I'm sure the coaches will make the right decision. Glad we have him even if we have to wait a year to see much of him.

Random observation — Zee is sure being featured in a lot of promo materials for someone that is expected to redshirt.

Maybe it’s because he’s one of only 2 black guys on the entire team.

I hope you're right.

These days I'm kind of unconvinced when people feel that a player needs to red-shirt to gain strength/weight.
Now days I'm simply in the camp that if a player is good, in a team's top 9 and better than someone else on the roster, play 'em.
If a guy isn't in the top 9, I'm okay with the idea of a redshirt.

In basketball, with the primarily stated reason for redshirting being strength/weight gain, are there many success stories?

I think more often you hear stories about how a person needed to redshirt, didn't, and got injured. I talked with a guy about how the recruiters at USU told him that they wouldn't play him for the first two years so he could put on some weight/strength so he decided to go to a Junior College and play right away. First game of the season got injured (I think he blew out both his knees) and his basketball career was over.

There is not much gained by a player by redshirting. Zee wasn't even the best player on his not so good national team. I do hope he surprise us and kicks a$$.

I assumed Tai redshirted mostly because we had Nate Harris (Jr), Spencer Nelson (Sr), and Cass Matheus (Jr), and there weren’t many minutes to go around, but I can understand if the stated reason was for him to get stronger.

Some other people who redshirted and turned out well (but I'm not sure why they redshirted): Quinn Taylor, Matt Formisano, Cass Matheus, and Nate Harris.

If a player is one of your better players, play them. If not, red shirt, if they have a red shirt, and see if they improve.
Why would you sit someone who is better than someone you are playing?

It's not complicated.

There is not much gained by a player by redshirting. Zee wasn't even the best player on his not so good national team. I do hope he surprise us and kicks a$$.
Adam Thoseby comes to mind. Couldn't remember his name, so I had to Google, and find that he's actually playing professionally in Austria. Wild. https://www.proballers.com/basketball/p ... am-thoseby

Hahaha, that's actually what I googled first. It kept suggesting Thoseby, so I finally clicked on it and then remembered.

I have a feeling Thoseberry's days as USU's best British basketball player are numbered.
