Brandon Horvath commits to USU
Well there's one. This is almost assuredly our starting big man alongside Bean next season.

Re: Brandon Horvath commits to USU
Of the UCMB players, he was the one I liked most.
Really good rebounder (him and Bean will clean glass like Bean and Queta did this year), and a decent shooter.
People were saying he's more of a 4, but positions only really matter on defense. If he can defend a 5 he doesn't have to be a big low-post threat to play the 5 in this league.

Should be a contributor but not really a needle mover. I'm not sure 47% FG and 30% 3-PT for a 6'-10" guy = good shooter but it does look like he can rebound. I hope he is the only player we are acquiring from the Retrievers.

I am mildly pleased. Not doing backflips. This guy might be pretty good, but we all got spoiled with Queta.

Solid addition. Shoots it better from 3 than the point guard we just lost to Utah.

I agree, we don't need UMBC players. We need top of the MW caliber players. We need to look elsewhere. Even if it's quality HS players that may be poached in a couple of years.

We've found one Queta in over 100 years of Aggie basketball. Plus a big like Horvath is a better fit with the new age of basketball unless you can find an elite rim protector.

Yes, awesome!
I think he'll be a fan favorite with his energy and leadership. Has the size, athleticism and ball-handling capabilities to play at this level after his 4 successful years at UMBC.
Here's hoping RJ, Akin, or Keondre joins next...

Re: Brandon Horvath commits to USU
Also, one of the issues we've had the past two years is that both Queta and Bean were too good not to start, but because neither could spread the floor our spacing was off. Put Horvath out there with Bean around the hoop and you're putting teams in a pickle. With space Bean will dominate the boards even more. If they help down Horvath should have as open of looks as he's ever gotten, while also having the handles to drive around bigs that try to close hard or even just guard him on the perimeter.

Yep. This is a good pickup. Replacing Queta was never going to happen and it shouldn't have been expected to happen. That is like saying the Jazz should have replaced Stockton or Malone after they left in 03. Horvath will be good.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 1:24 pmHit nearly 37% the season before.Intermeddler wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 1:15 pmSolid addition. Now let's get Eytle-Rock and we will be in serious business.

Re: Brandon Horvath commits to USU
I love this addition. If you look at his stats he has only gotten better every year. If he can shoot percentage wise more like he did 2 seasons ago, but average the same or more as he did this year, he could be one of our best players. He will have to adjust to MW level, but I mean Horvath has played solid teams while at UMBC.

For anyone in the know, is UMBC's conference a whole lot "lower" than the MWC conference as far as basketball quality?

Like others have said, if we can get Eytle-Rock & then one athletic p5 transfer that’s looking for more playing time I think we’ll be in business.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 1:50 pmYep. Yep, still the whitest team in America but regardless, I like the pickup, a grad transfer that fills a need and it's a guy that knows Odom's system and culture. I think that helps a ton to have a player or two like that on the roster.

What would you like that p5 transfer to be under that scenario? Quick guard or long wing?Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 1:52 pmLike others have said, if we can get Eytle-Rock & then one athletic p5 transfer that’s looking for more playing time I think we’ll be in business.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 1:50 pmYep. quick guard for me. let McBuckets or Bairstow be the "long wing". we need athleticism and someone (a few "someones" would be better) that can PENETRATE and then either dish or finish strong.

Last year's NET had MWC #11, AmerEast #19, BigSky #21. We had 3 teams sub 250, AmerEast 4 and Big Sky 6.

Re: Brandon Horvath commits to USU
Need:
1) A primary ball handler that can guard the point, get to the basket, and not turn the ball over:
2) A wing player that can guard the wing (opponents best perimeter player) and shoot threes at a 40% clip, or better
3) (do we have three spots available?) - A 6'8" - 6'9" guy with some bulk that can rebound, push people around in the post, and likes to dunk.

Re: Brandon Horvath commits to USU
FWIW, Odom's 2018-19 squad beat an 8-10 MW Air Force squad in 2OT.
Vermont and UMBC have been consistently solid in the past 5 years, and Hartford, Stony Brook and Albany all have good programs. Unfortunately we usually have 2-3 schools (Maine, Binghamton, pre-Odom UMBC) that are absolutely abysmal and drag down the conference's ratings.

I also expect organic improvement from Ashworth, Shulga, Bairstow, McChesney, Dorius and Zapala.
A couple of solid adds and we will not think the cupboard was as bare as we did previously

Re: Brandon Horvath commits to USU
This is exactly how if feel. We should not be so arrogant as a fanbase to not think that a first team all conference selection from a DI school is not a good addition. He has the size to hopefully defend the paint on defense, but on offense is more than capable of hitting down some 3 point shots.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 1:49 pmLove it!
