I would personally like to see guys retained from the previous staff rather that hiring a former player or "Alumnus".
I would like to see the best Assistants not some dude that's an Aggie.
This is how I feel. You get the best coaches that are available. If they are former aggies, great, but get the best people available. All that matters is that the coaches are good coaches/recruiters and treat the players with the respect they deserve. No need to pigeon hole your options. With the landscape the way it is any coach can be successful at any location in the country so long as they are a good coach. I always find it odd that Michigan football is always obsessed with finding a Michigan man to be their head coach. Why in the hell does it matter, just get the best coach that is available.

Two of the three assistant spots are filled. Possibly all three. I can't say much more than that right now. I'm sorry.

How does this compare to what was allocated for Smith's assistants?

This as much the lowest end D1 head coaches make. It is a good deal.

Are there any former Aggie basketball players are working their way up through the coaching profession like Chucky, DJ or AL on the football side?
Tai Wesley just wrapped up his pro career and I believe is living in Utah somewhere. He'd be an amazing assistant coach! Or maybe Jalen Moore.
Tai is doing mortgages in Pocatello, ID.
Really? He went from playing professional basketball in New Zealand to working mortgages in Pocatello? That's depressing.
There is nothing wrong with the pocatello area. I lived close by in american falls for 3 years after college, really enjoyed it there.
Not to mention the housing market is booming there. Pocatello always gets overlooked, but it is one of the finest cities in Idaho.
I always thought it was pretty country surrounding Pocatello as well, but my biggest beef was the downtown trainyards and industrial eye sore. Have they cleaned it up yet?
Pocatello is the Gateway to Idaho Falls.

Shouldn’t we assume Odom is likely bringing an assistant or two from UMBC? I’d think Nate Dixon is likely coming along as he’s Odom’s right hand man from what I can tell. He seems to be the lead recruiter that brought in their UK players and several other prominent pieces in their team.

There might be a few upset about lack of a former Aggie on staff, but I don't think most people get worked up over assistant coaching hires in basketball. Assistants basketball coaches also don't seem to get the criticism that football coaches get.

What about our boy who used to coach at Wasatch Academy? Could he be a potential target? Would be good at least for recruiting locally...

Curtis Condie, there it is.

I brought it up in the other thread but it got lost a little. One of the big questions JH was going to ask in interviews, is who would make up the staff. Does anybody have any insight on this. Is Odom bringing some of his staff with him. Is he going to retain some current. Or is he just going to start over?
Is he going to get Spencer or Jaycee?
Why are you enamored with Spencer as an assistant? Went Smith came in and did not retain him Spencer took a job with a financial advisory group. He’s been out of the coaching ranks for three years.
There were people on here that made it out to be this horrible thing that Craig Smith didn't retain Spencer. Then Smith went out and won 76% of his MW games over the next 3 years, something nobody thought possible.

Just because someone was great as a player at USU doesn't mean they are a good coach and should be on staff.
Not quite. Nobody thought it was “horrible”. Some of us did think it might be a good idea to have someone act as a “bridge” for the current players and to help navigate the state of Utah.

It has been blown WAYYYYYYYYYY out of proportion

I don’t think so. I remember there being so much pressure there Craig Smith had to address the topic of Spencer Nelson early on in interviews & maybe even his introductory press conference.
Yeah there were some people pretty angry with Smith on this board for not retaining Nelson. Obviously not everyone who wanted Nelson to be retained thought it was "horrible" but some certainly did. Until Smith leaving for Utah, it was by far the thing Smith got the most criticism for on this board.
Spencer not being retained might not have been because Smith didn't want him. Maybe he just didn't want to coach anymore. I don't think he's tried to get another coaching job since.

From what I’ve been told, Craig offered Spencer a chance to stay on staff in a support job but not as a full assistant and he left to do financial planning or whatever it is he does now.

I think they'll be fine.
“Fine” is a word like “interesting”. Can go either way.
I'm not trying to rile anybody up. Haha! In my opinion, this will be a good staff. Each guy meets specific recruiting needs.
Can you confirm or deny that any of them are Greg Gottleib, Kris Clark, Curtis Condie, or Griff Aldrich?

Anybody from the previous staff in consideration for any of the positions?
I don't believe so.

Two of the three assistant spots are filled. Possibly all three. I can't say much more than that right now. I'm sorry.
The only question i have is will the majority of us be happy with the hires or are we going to have repeated melt down like we do on so many topics?

No denying, so I take it that I am on to something.

When asked the question about assistants, he referred back to UMBC's search to replace him. Made me think he was considering bringing someone, but the person he would bring is being considered to replace him there.

I'd like to see Tommy Connor on the staff. Granted, there has to be interest from both sides.

Wife: "How do I look?"
Me: "Fine"
Wife: "Get out...now."
Even worse:

Wife: "Do I look okay?"

Me: "That's exactly how you look"

Followed by a tense week of silent treatment.
