It’s not WHAT he did it’s HOW he did it.
I understand it poor form to which coach smith failure however my problem isn’t with taking a better paying job.
My problem is that no one knew. No one. He did not tell assistant coaches, AD, or his players. Hours after the news broke he sent a group text to his assistants and players saying that he was leaving.
He still has not come out and said anything positive about his time at USU.
It’s one thing to leave a job, it’s another to crap on the front porch on your way out.

It certainly gives me a renewed appreciation for Stew. Stew wouldn't have ever handled it this way.

I'm watching his press conference right now. He was specifically asked about the last 48 hours and leaving USU and he completely dodged the question.Winning Team wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 11:45 amI understand it poor form to which coach smith failure however my problem isn’t with taking a better paying job.

I am watching and noticed this as well. I also have noticed he is not brining his typical confidence and energy that he did while at USU. No mention of GATA eitherProvoAggie wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 11:48 amI'm watching his press conference right now. Got really awkward when they asked him if he talked to the former players before leaving and he said no.

Re: It’s not WHAT he did it’s HOW he did it.
This. This type of behavior just shows what’s wrong with collegiate athletics. The players are just caught in the crossfire. Hopefully his behavior bodes well for USU, and he burns bridges with his Aggie recruits and that they stick around. Outside of Queta and Fonz, none of his guys were impactful in any of the MWC championships. He walked into a already decent situation and just added the spark.
Let’s be honest there are 100s of Coach Smith types in the ranks, I’m optimistic Hartwell will find one. Maybe just maybe they will be a Stew/Few type guy and want some tenure. Although the younger generation of coaches all seem to be searching for the payday.

He said the “timing” was bad and that’s why he wasn’t able to meet in person with them. You’re telling me they couldn’t wait to do a press conference till Monday so he had time to tell his players and coaches instead of sending a lame text?

Re: It’s not WHAT he did it’s HOW he did it.
I honestly don't know how you can talk for 5 minutes about how important relationships with players are and that when they sit down in a recruits living room that they make a commitment to take care of them through their college career and then move on to saying that they didn't have time to even say bye to their former players. Kind of makes the earlier statements sound hollow.

Re: It’s not WHAT he did it’s HOW he did it.
I just woke up to the news and I am sick. The ONE school I didn't want him to go to. Craig has been huge for the program but the way he handled this is just very odd and doesn't seem like him. I wonder if he actually wasn't offered until very recently and was told that he had to make a decision very fast or else he couldn't get the job. Because I don't know why Craig wouldn't tell the players or coaches.
Re: It’s not WHAT he did it’s HOW he did it.
The way he chose to let his staff and players know was a group text several hours after it was already known? WowWinning Team wrote:I understand it poor form to which coach smith failure however my problem isn’t with taking a better paying job.

Or even push the press conference to later on Saturday. Not that hard to say I am going to call a meeting with my staff and team and talk to themTrueBlueAggie123 wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 12:04 pmHe said the “timing” was bad and that’s why he wasn’t able to meet in person with them. It was a very awkward press conference. If you were to watch his introductory press conference with USU and this one you would be like this is a completely different guy

I spoke with a former star player's brother (not Merrill) last night and he told me some stuff about when Smith showed up on the scene that made me lose some respect for the guy. Then I hear this today.

This whole thing has felt really fishy. The press conference especially. That was messed up.... Nothing like getting off on the right foot. If I were a Ute fan I would be scared shi&less.

It’s not WHAT he did it’s HOW he did it.
He also mentioned how he knows basketball fans in the state love the rivalries and that he wants to keep the series going with BYU, and says they’ll play other in state teams, but if it won’t help their chances of making it to the tournament, they probably won’t schedule the games.

Are we talking when he showed up on the scene at USU or what exactly? Don't feel pressured to share things that you shouldn't, but this does spark curiosityYouEssYou wrote:I spoke with a former star player's brother (not Merrill) last night and he told me some stuff about when Smith showed up on the scene that made me lose some respect for the guy. I don't think he looks awkward or low energy, it's just a covid presser.
The thing I don't get is that he met with the Utah players and watched Utah film this morning, but couldn't meet with Utah State players. What a D bag.

Smith leaving for Utah is like a girlfriend dumping you for your brother. And a brother you really don't like.
