Very solid night for Anthony, Anderson and Bairstow
Marco played 35 minutes, scored 15, had several sweet finishes at the rim. Craig seemed to want to give him more rein last night -- Bean, Miller and Worster all played 26 minutes or less, but Marco got 35 in a(nother) 30 point win.
Fonz scored 14 in 13 minutes. Strong inside and out, and apparently there's a good braid stylist in Lubbock.
Sean scored 9 in 15 and -- trumpets please -- zero turnovers.
Also: nine different players had at least one assist...UNM only scored 15 baskets in 40 minutes...did we turn the ball over once against their press? I don't remember it if we did...we had 46 points in the paint, they only scored 45 total...3-ball was off tonight, but if you're getting to the rim at will that's even better...UNM's starters totaled 21 points...
Also: happy 2500 posts to me. I can think of at least six I'm proud of.

Re: Very solid night for Anthony, Anderson and Bairstow
I would add Ashworth to the list of having a solid night. While his point production was low he did a great job of breaking
New mexico press. I don't remember him having hardly any turnovers in bringing the ball up the court. Once the press
was broken he found open players that were able to score before the defense was set up.

Re: Very solid night for Anthony, Anderson and Bairstow
UNM's vaunted press was definitely a net negative for them. The first half they pressured the inbound pass, but basically went back to just token pressure. When they cranked it up, we handled well. Ashworth is the man in those situations. Such decisiveness and being able to read the floor is very impressive for a freshman.

I was very impressed with Anderson last night. I thought he had some really awesome minutes. When he plays like that, we are hard to beat. His defense was on point as well.

Re: Very solid night for Anthony, Anderson and Bairstow
Ashworth has certainly been USU's best player handling the press. I do remember one turnover he had against the press, but he ran down the court right after and stole the ball right back. He had a good open look at a three that didn't go in, but he needs to keep shooting those. He is a competent outside shooter. He is definitely earning his minutes.AGGIEFIGHT wrote: ↑January 7th, 2021, 9:57 amI would add Ashworth to the list of having a solid night. Vedischev dribbled into a trap in the corner just over the half court line at the end of the game and lost the ball. With the turnaround in his play I thought maybe we had a reverse Samson thing going on.

I actually found a video of Vedischev shooting about with a friend before he came to USU. He's not afraid to shoot, that's for sure.

Re: Very solid night for Anthony, Anderson and Bairstow
I agree completely, his stats won't show it, but he played really well running the offense. He was on point breaking the press. His shot was off, but I love his energy. He is starting to play well. Super happy for him.AGGIEFIGHT wrote: ↑January 7th, 2021, 9:57 amI would add Ashworth to the list of having a solid night. While his point production was low he did a great job of breaking

Re: Very solid night for Anthony, Anderson and Bairstow
My favorite part of the game was watching Ashworth and how he handles the press. And the best part of that is when he crosses the mid court line. I don’t know if anyone else notices, but when he crosses the line, his opponent stays on him and another opponent starts over to create a trap. Ashworth sees the trap coming and quickly dribbles away or makes a quick pass. Sometimes the pass is to the man the opponent just left to create a trap, and that team mate is usually open. It’s a beautiful thing.IYossarian wrote: ↑January 7th, 2021, 10:33 amAshworth has certainly been USU's best player handling the press. Sometimes Rollie just seems to lose the ball randomly...like it just bounces away from him, or over him. But he's doing great, and I'm very glad he and Ashworth are with us!

I don't think Anderson realizes how good he can be. He has moves with either hand around the bucket and has decent size. It seems like he easily loses confidence if a shot or two doesn't fall. Last night I saw some Tai Wesley in him with the physicality. Hoping it sticks.

He also has a good touch on his three-point shot. He just has lapses of judgement or effort that keep him from getting 30 minutes of playing time a night.BigSkyAG wrote: ↑January 7th, 2021, 4:07 pmI don't think Anderson realizes how good he can be. Re: Very solid night for Anthony, Anderson and Bairstow
I've said it before - Anthony brings an athleticism to the guard positron we don't get very often around here. His ability to take a pass or rebound under the basket and quickly jump up off two feet and dunk is impressive. No running start. Just jumping up in a half court set and throwing down. Impressive and rare in these parts. I was horrified watching him shoot in those first two games, but he is winning me over. Very nice addition to this team.
