Craziest stat of the season

Post by SLB » January 3rd, 2021, 8:40 am

Brock Miller is currently the only Aggie on a 4-game active double digit point streak. Brock Miller is our top scorer in our in-conference play.

Another wild stat is when Brock Miller plays 23 or more minutes in this season, we have gone 5-0.

I go back to the ball we were using last year. I was skeptical but now I really wonder.

Is the MWC using the chip ball this year or did they reverse course back to what they had before. I might have missed it, but haven't heard anything definitive about that.

I guess I haven't followed Miller too closely this year. But looking at his box score last game.... I'm not sure things are any better.

5-13 for 13 points. Ok, I can live with that...
0 offensive rebounds, 0 defensive rebounds, 0 assists, 1 steal, 0 blocks, 1 turnover.
Really anemic on every other line....
Previous game against AFA.
5-10 for 14 points.
0 offensive rebounds, 1 defensive rebound, 2 assists, 2 steals.

Suffice it to say that Worster has outrebounded Miller 8-1 the last 2 games and is shorter.....
I'd go back further, but I'm guessing that rebounds, assists, steals, blocks are all pretty awful for Miller, even though his shot has begun to fall.

His 3 point shooting is what has improved dramatically.

I would say his on ball defense has improved as well. He's doing a much better job of staying in front of his man.

I have had that same thought as well. We kept hearing how great he was in practice.

This is as close to practicing as you will get with not many fans.

I’m reserving judgment until I see what he does in a close game in a crucial situation. Much easier shooting when you are up 30 points.

He is shooting better, I hope he shoots like this against good teams. You know, teams that play good defense. I'm not that optimistic. His defense is terrible imo, the rest of his stats are not that great. We need his shooting though. I hope he keeps shooting well. Two air balls last night and they we open shots.

Yep. Remember for a few days last March when the NCAA tournament was going to happen, but with no fans? I was excited since we had a good team and I thought Miller would be more efficient from 3. It turns out he is better with no fans, but as others have said, we'll see if he can keep this 42% going when we play better teams. It would be great if he can.

You are watching a different Miller than I am. Brock’s lateral speed is terrible. He can’t seem to keep in front of his man. Queta erases some of Brock’s defensive mistakes. His 3-pont shooting has improved since last year (how could it not improve?) but I hold my breath every time he puts it up. Will he swish the 3-pointer or will his shot not even draw iron?

Overall he has improved but he remains a one-dimensional player — a three-point shooter. He is #12 on the team in FTs made (1) even though he is #5 in minutes played. He has a higher 3-point shooting % than 2-point percentage. He gets picked on defensively. But he is a key in teams needing to play Queta more honestly in fear of Brock hitting a 3-pointer. Last year they had confidence in letting him fire away.

Regression to the mean. Old Brock is back for sure. 21 minutes. 1-5 shooting 0 rebounds 1 assist.

That is just the shooters curse. Some games you play great and others you don't. I think Brock was off due to the gym. It isn't easy to recalibrate to those smaller gyms. I hope that night two will be better for him. I also think his 0 rebounds were due to his assignment to get back on defense. They were getting easy buckets pushing the tempo. I thought his defense was pretty good and his passing was also pretty good. Fonso took up the slack and played like a beast.

Look, Brock's been having a good year. Even good players have off games. I was absolutely right near the front of the "give Brick Miller no PT" last year, but I'm eating crow on that. He's no Sam Merrill or Jaycee Carroll or *insert reliable, clutch player here*, but he's been what we need. He's an outside shooting threat, and he had an off night. Give the man a break.

He's active on defense, and puts his heart into. He might get out-athleted by other players, but he's not slacking off.

I was also on the Brock Miller hate-train last year and early this year. The stats have made me rethink my preconceived notions. He has played well this year.

Brock has been solid this year. Not every game is gong to be great. His shooting % is improved and I feel like his shot selection is better this year. He is a solid player, never going to be the star, but he is a vital piece of our team.

According to ESPN stats, Miller, Bairstow and Ashworth are all sitting at about 42% from 3. It is crucial to have at least some outside shooting to have a decent inside game. What I found surprising is that Marco Anthony is 40% from 3. The last person I want shooting from outside is Worster. I think he will be ok in the future, but boy his 3 pointer is ugly right now.

1-6 3 points and 2 rebounds on Friday.
His stats are regressing to what he actually is.... Not very good.
And for those that don't think we have anyone better, take a look at Ashworth's production.

Miller-

Minutes 23.1
FG% 39.8
3 PT% 38.6
FT% 66.7
REB 1.4
AST 1.0
PTS 8.0

Ashworth
Minutes 17.7
FG% 41.5
3 PT% 39.4
FT% 85.2
REB 1.7
AST 2.1
PTS 6.7

So Ashworth is more productive on every line except PTS because he shoots the ball much less than Miller. I mean Ashworth outrebounds Miller and is at least 3 or 4 inches shorter.

I see comparable numbers overall. 5 mins of playing time difference isn’t all that much either. They are both doing well and getting good playing time. Brock probably gets the edge in minutes due to leadership and experience as well.

Re-watching the New Mexico games, I noticed that Miller played good defense against the Maluach. Maluach had to make some crazy hard shots against Miller.

Only 5 minutes..... 23.1/17.7 = 1.3... So Brock is getting 30% more playing time than Ashworth but only scores (8/6.7 = 1.19) 19% more than Ashworth. Based only on these particular stats, Ashworth is more productive than Miller on a per minute basis. Of course, these stats don't take into account the competition level during each player's time on the floor (defenders as well as teammates).

SLB loves to cherry pick stats that don't mean much. Stats can lie pretty easily as well. To start to get an idea of what's really taking place I recommend looking at the advanced analytics.

They can be found here https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/sc ... /2021.html and on kenpom.com.

Not sure how I cherry picked any stats. Those are the season stats according to ESPN.
But let's take a look at the advanced analytics ytd if you prefer.

Steven Ashworth

WinShares (Higher is better) 1.0
WinShares per 40 mintues .205
Offensive Win Shares .6
Usage Percentage 19%
Turnover % (lower is better) 16%
Assist Percentage 19.3%
Total Rebound Percentage 6.5%
True Shooting Percentage .584
Points Produced 71

Brock Miller
WinShares (Higher is better) .9
WinShares per 40 mintues .137
Offensive Win Shares .5
Usage Percentage 19%
Turnover % (lower is better) 9.6%
Assist Percentage 6.8%
Total Rebound Percentage 3.6%
True Shooting Percentage- .548
Points Produced 78

So Brock is leading in Points Produced (based on playing time) and Turnover%. Everything else is bad.

I think WinShares per 40 minutes says it all in this case. It appears that Brock is marginally better this year than last year based on most advanced analytics, but he's been regressing back to his mean the last several games. I'm guessing this trend will continue.

So based on the somewhat obvious disdain for Brock, we are supposed to start Ashcroft at SF? Or as a SG moving Anthony to SF? Or as a PG moving two other players somewhere?

There is perhaps something to be said when stats are compared for two players in the same position, but when they aren't it's kind of a weird dynamic.

At a quick glance, it appears that Ashcroft is ahead of Worster in all the dynamics that the link shows, but you want Ashcroft to replace Miller instead of someone that plays the same position.

I actually kind of like having an energetic player coming off the bench to contribute immediately. It changes the pace of the game in a beneficial way.

I like ashworth coming off the bench, he brings a lot of energy. I think the starting 5 is pretty solid.

No disdain at all for Brock at all. I wish he produced consistently. My point is his numbers are rapidly regressing to last years, and without his shooting he really doesn’t bring much value.
Is Ashworth the solution, not sure. Is it Bairstow? Not sure.
Is Brock a massively better player than last year?
No.
Is Brock the weakest link in our starting 5..... by a long shot.....
Yes.
