SJSU is really that bad and we come back down to earth in an away game against a team that Smith struggles to plan against

We are even with last year with a sweep of SJSU. We need a split this week to be even with AF last year. Many of our best teams, including those coached by Stew, have lost at AF. I almost feel more confident playing SDSU. But here goes.....

Re: Air Force game 1 predictions
Smith's teams are 2-1 against the AFA, including 1-1 at Clune Arena. Admittedly, the team laid a huge egg there last year, but in the follow-up in Logan a few weeks later USU won by 25. So I am not all that caught up in the AFA mystique. KenPom has AFA as the #4 toughest home court In DI. UNM is #6 and USU is #7. So the arena (with the cadet support) may be more of a factor that the team itself. And the new (old?) coach is a new variable.
That said, I am not sure that they have the 3-point shooting(35%) they need to really thrive in their system.
And they don't have an answer for Queta.

Re: Air Force game 1 predictions
#4? That's ridiculous. The only thing that would be difficult is altitude. I live in the springs and go to every game that usu plays at air force, and have for about 6 years now. I've never seen either the football or basketball venue more than 1/3 full. When the basketball venue was that full, it was for a halftime show featuring elementary school aged dancers/aspiring cheer leaders, and it cleared out pretty quickly after that. The fans are all old and don't do a lot of cheers. Maybe things will be different with the new old coach?SectionBAggie wrote: ↑December 28th, 2020, 10:50 amSmith's teams are 2-1 against the AFA, including 1-1 at Clune Arena. Don’t worry we tend to bring out the best in opponents 3pt shooting.SectionBAggie wrote: ↑December 28th, 2020, 10:50 amSmith's teams are 2-1 against the AFA, including 1-1 at Clune Arena. Re: Air Force game 1 predictions
What is a good defense against their offense?
Do we go small and try to run with them?
Do we go big and deny cuts and backdoors, and force then to beat is with mid-range jumpers and beyond?
I love b-ball, but don’t have enough technical knowhow to know how one defends their offense.
That being said, I think things are clicking OK and we win comfortably 78-65.

Re: Air Force game 1 predictions
I've seen us lose enough times at air force to pretty much expect it now. By the way, this will be our first road game of the season.

Isn’t that crazy. End of the year and it’s our first true road game. Does anyone know if Air Force lets in fans?

Re: Air Force game 1 predictions
I am not sure, but if i had to guess if they do allow fans it will be limited. There fan support the last few years for basketball have been abysmal.
Re: Air Force game 1 predictions
Here’s to a good game with no injuries. No fans will be allowed and cadets are gone for Christmas. Always a small fan base in recent years but passionate. I still remember years gone by when it was filled to capacity (4 years in a row equaled two NCAA invites and 2 NIT invites 2004-2007 playing in NIT semis 2007)
Young team with new coach but don’t let that fool you. New (old) coach as Joe Scott back who took us to first NCAA in 2004 after winning MWC. Brings back true Princeton. Con is it’s new but pro is we have been running a hybrid Princeton offense with the principles instilled in the players. More importantly you’ll see a matchup zone for 40mins.
Keys will be how we handle bigs z(Quetta) inside vs getting to perimeter guarding the arc.
While Nevada is not the top team this year as they were in years gone by, note in our first MWC series we split with them not only winning on the road in Reno game 2, but winning there for the first time EVER (now something like 1-10). Very good for program. We are coming off a break as last scheduled game cancelled due to COVID on the visiting team Utah Valley State. Reference shooting stats AF is 35% from the arc and USU 31% on the season.
GO FALCONS

Re: Air Force game 1 predictions
Just for a fun reference (if anything about last year's loss can be fun), my son and daughter-in-law attended the game in Clune last year. At a point in the disaster that was the second half, Brito threw up a brick that hit nothing but backboard. The cadets started chanting Air Ball. My son, being across the aisle from several cadets pointed out that the collision with the backboard invalidated the "Air Ball" chant. Then he said something like "If any student body should understand that detail I would think it would be the AFA".
Here's hoping for two fun games on the scoreboard.

Re: Air Force game 1 predictions
Being true scholars AND basketball fans AF cadets (the few that come to games) know and understand that it's kinda like a Yoda thing....the backboard does not exist, it is only a metaphor unless it assists in making a basket therefore...........SectionBAggie wrote: ↑December 29th, 2020, 1:36 pmJust for a fun reference (if anything about last year's loss can be fun), my son and daughter-in-law attended the game in Clune last year. Re: Air Force game 1 predictions
I think the game will be tough and they run a unique system, but we will have had 4 days of practice prep for these guys. It is not like AF has been world beaters this year. I do think the Aggies are going to play with a chip on their shoulder with something to prove.
