I'd vote yes but he wouldn't be the OC here.ViAggie wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 11:34 amhttps://www.kcbd.com/2020/12/14/sources ... ead-coach/

I'd take him back as a position coach and then move him up to OC if Tucker gets hired away (or isn't good, but I think he will be).

I can't imagine how tough it has to be for a head coach to fire a coordinator. These guys spend so much time together all year round. They have to develop a pretty strong bond - hanging out and getting to know them and their families personally. To have to fire a guy that you have worked so closely with has got to be tough.

That would be good. I'd take him in the stable or at least have his number handy if Tucker doesn't get the job done. It was only 2 years ago we had the second best scoring offense in the country.3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 11:39 amI'd take him back as a position coach and then move him up to OC if Tucker gets hired away (or isn't good, but I think he will be).

I imagine it was extremely hard for Wells. Not just the 4 years together, but Yost changed the tide of Wells career.Yossarian wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 11:51 amI can't imagine how tough it has to be for a head coach to fire a coordinator. Yost had a three year contract with Texas tech. If he wanted to come back we could let Matt Wells pay his salary for the first year.

Or maybe he will take a paid year off and do some surfing.

i'll just remind everyone that while Yost did work magic in 2018, he did so with a future first-round draft pick and a veteran offensive line. it's a valid question whether Yost made the magic or whether those players made Yost...

Even with a weak schedule, that was a special team with a great offense. We put more points on michigan state than Ohio State, Michigan or Penn State did that year. We scored 50 or more 7x. It was a great team. I have no doubt Yost would have been able to do better offensively the last two years than what we have seen had he remained.AggieHead wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 12:11 pmYou forgot one of the weakest schedules in modern Aggie football as well.ShowMeAggie wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 12:09 pmi'll just remind everyone that while Yost did work magic in 2018, he did so with a future first-round draft pick and a veteran offensive line. it's a valid question whether Yost made the magic or whether those players made Yost...

not a real high standard to reach, and i have my doubts about his coaching prowess. not sure i ever heard that he was a killer on the recruiting circuit, either. i'd rather fill coaching spots with coaches that can coach AND recruit at a high level. i'd potentially give him a look as a qb coach, though.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 12:14 pmEven with a weak schedule, that was a special team with a great offense. Well we'll see what the new coaching staff can do. If they don't get the job done and there needs to be an OC change, I'd absolutely support bring back Yost. It actually is a high bar. People downplaying the 2018 team must forget who we are. That was a special season and a special team. We just went 1-5 and had a trainwreck season. People act like it is easly to duplicate 10 wins when we have only done it 3x in history.ShowMeAggie wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 12:24 pmnot a real high standard to reach, and i have my doubts about his coaching prowess. not sure i ever heard that he was a killer on the recruiting circuit, either. i'd rather fill coaching spots with coaches that can coach AND recruit at a high level. i'd potentially give him a look as a qb coach, though.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 12:14 pmEven with a weak schedule, that was a special team with a great offense. I'm not interested in Yost. I'm not convinced he's a good OC.
He had one good season with a great team. He wasn't very good in short yardage. He's rigid in his scheme. I like flexibility in an OC. I want a mad scientist who is being creative.

We'll see what the next OC can do. I just think it is funny people are downplaying an offense that put up 47 points a game and won 11 games "because the schedule was weak."brownjeans wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 12:40 pmI'm not interested in Yost. I'm not convinced he's a good OC.

I hate to go all stanfordaggie and not act like we are Alabama, but other than 2012, it was our best season in the last 50 years. Winning 10 games is an extremely special accomplishment at USU. It is funny you guys brush that aside. If Anderson can ever get us to 10 wins, it will be a big deal. I'm excited about what he is going to do, but he never had a 10 win season at Ark State. Yet somehow I'm supposed to just dismiss what Yost did here? Nah.

Re: David Yost now available
you completely missed the point...it's not a very "high bar" to clear to say he could've done better than we did the last two years. we've been abysmal the last two years, so it's not a huge stretch to believe that Yost could've done better. I agree(d) with you that Yost presided over some potent offenses. It seems we disagree, somewhat, about WHY we had the success we did.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 12:33 pmWell we'll see what the new coaching staff can do. Re: David Yost now available
I think people give Yost way too much credit. There is very little evidence to support the argument that Yost is amazing outside of one season. The Yosters act like other people on the staff and on the field had nothing to do with it.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 12:47 pmWe'll see what the next OC can do. It's a gimmick offense and it works for a while. Ultimately it's doomed. At this point, who is running up-tempo? Oregon? As stated in another thread, the big issue for me of a hurry up offense is how much pressure it puts on your defense. My sense was that Yost did a good job with both the scheme and managing the players. However, given where our D is currently at, a hurry up offense could be a troubling proposition.

Re: David Yost now available
The thing that always bothered me with the hurry up offense that we ran:
Every time after a big chunk yardage play that we had, we would run up to the line of scrimmage and just run a dive play up the middle with a runningback. I'm no football coach, but it would seem to me that if you are going to run a quick play after a long yardage play, the easiest play to defend would be the dive in the A-gap. Why not run a sweep or set up a screen to a running back or tunnel screen to a slot receiver or trick play, or a double-move post or fly pattern pass at that point? Why not run something that is tougher to sniff out and defend while you have the defense on their heels? You can have 4 plays ready to go and just audible at the line of scrimmage within a few seconds of the ball being placed for play when you see how the defense lines up. I didn't like the Aggies' attempt at the hurry up offense when the only thing they would do is run up the middle after the hurry up.

Re: David Yost now available
Nobody really cares whether it was a weak schedule or not, people remember winning 11 games and being a top 20 team. Let's not act like the 2012 schedule was all that tough either. The two losses in 2012 were against the weakest Wisconsin team of the past ten years and the team only managed 3 points against a mediocre BYU team. Seven of the 11 wins came against either an FCS opponent or teams with losing records (3 of those teams had only 4 wins total among them for the season). 2012's signature win came at home, in overtime, against what is tied for being the worst Utah team in the past 17 years.AggieHead wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 12:11 pmYou forgot one of the weakest schedules in modern Aggie football as well.ShowMeAggie wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 12:09 pmi'll just remind everyone that while Yost did work magic in 2018, he did so with a future first-round draft pick and a veteran offensive line. it's a valid question whether Yost made the magic or whether those players made Yost...
I'd much rather have a decade of 10 and 11 win seasons against weaker competition than 5 or 6 win seasons against stronger competition. Winning brings in the fans, fans bring in the money, money builds the foundation for a stronger program.

Not to mention we didn’t just win, but we often blew away the competition while only having our NFL quarter back play 1/2 the game, the numbers he put up were amazing. So yes, Love and the oline helped, but Yost was the master planner that helped make it what it was.

Ironically, AFiH, USU leadership pulled the reins from the offense away from Wells and forced the hiring of Yost, saving Wells job when he was backed into a corner.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 11:58 amI imagine it was extremely hard for Wells. These guys spend so much time together all year round. They have to develop a pretty strong bond - hanging out and getting to know them and their families personally. To have to fire a guy that you have worked so closely with has got to be tough.
I also don't see the logic in giving a hard grade to a coach this season due to COVID unless there is more to the story. Yost is a tremendous offensive mind and was the perfect mentor for J. Love. I'm curious what type of offensive scheme TT's benefactors really want to see?

That is something we agree on. Re: David Yost now available
It isn't a high bar to be better than this year. Two years ago we were a winning team. And two years ago with Yost we were historically great. Yes, the schedule was weak, but it was one of the best seasons in USU history with the longest winning streak in school history. That shouldn't just be dismissed or forgotten. We aren't Alabama where 11 win seasons happen every year.ShowMeAggie wrote: ↑December 14th, 2020, 12:51 pmyou completely missed the point...it's not a very "high bar" to clear to say he could've done better than we did the last two years. we've been abysmal the last two years, so it's not a huge stretch to believe that Yost could've done better.
