Re: Blake Anderson??
Hugh Freeze and Gus Malzhan both went 10-3 there and then the next year Harsin was 7-5. That seemed to work out all right for Boise State. Anderson has kept it at a pretty consistent level his whole tenure there at right about 8 wins a year. Not sure what to think about this hire, but I could get on board. Averaging 8 wins a year at USU would be pretty good.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑December 10th, 2020, 11:03 amHiring from Arkansas State worked out for Boise. Also, I think the SunBelt is underrated as a conference.

Who else had a sneaky suspicion that our next coach would come from the south?...it's just where Hartwell has the most connections.

Re: Blake Anderson??
Wells worked with him on Adam Kennedy's transfer in 2014. Found Adam a nice landing spot where he could compete for the starting job. I'm sure Matt had good things to say about Blake when talking to John Hartwell.
Back to Adam Kennedy and 2014. We would go on to have four different starting QBs that year and if Adam had stayed in Logan he would have been our starting QB.

Re: Blake Anderson??
Not only that, but his check really checks a box for Hartwell IMO in that he landed a great hire for his resume. He just hired away a coach that many perceive as a lateral move.

Was he the coach when we lost at ASU? One of the most embarrassing losses of my fandom. And there have been plenty of bad ones.

There's a lot of pressure at Tech to fire Yost. I have to wonder if there's a chance now Yost becomes the OC again.

It sounds like Anderson runs his offenses his way. Yost might not be balanced enough but just looking at stats arkansas state has put up a lot of points. I'm far more concerned about getting the defense right. That is when USU has had success.ViAggie wrote: ↑December 10th, 2020, 11:26 amI'd take him backRoy McAvoy wrote: ↑December 10th, 2020, 11:20 amBlake & Matt Wells are very good friends.

Relevantly, look how MW has done at his new job and how much TT fans like him. Ugh, not a really exciting hire.hickaggie wrote: ↑December 10th, 2020, 10:47 amI'm still glad he's gone. Hope he picks a damn good coordinator and maintains the missionary and poly recruiting so we can have a D-line.3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑December 10th, 2020, 10:45 amNot to re-litigate this, but Utah State fans were wanting Wells gone and he gave us our best football years ever.

Re: Blake Anderson??
Thats TBD. I think it would be safe to say its a less risky hire. That doesn't necessarily equate to better.
Arkansas State @ Utah State in 2006
Does anyone else remember the ASU-USU game in Logan on 2016? The Aggies took a 24-0 lead less than one minute into the second quarter. The Aggies didn’t look good at all and held on to win 34-20.
The main thing I remember from that game was thinking that ASU looked as bad as any FBS team I have seen in Logan.
If they weren’t the worst team, they were certainly the most undisciplined (except for maybe a couple of Brent Guy teams). ASU was penalized 18 times for 129 yards, and there were a lot of crazy penalties showing that the players weren’t focused on wining the game. The worst was that it was clear that the ASU coach was practically encouraging it.
That’s all I know about ASU and their coach.

Re: Arkansas State @ Utah State in 2006
Yeah that game personified Wells coaching when he got a lead and didn't say much for ASU. The Aggies attempt to give the game away combined with ASU's refusal to take it is all I remember. I remember they beat the Aggies the year before in a game involving FGs and big plays called back or wasted.dogie wrote: ↑December 10th, 2020, 11:53 amDoes anyone else remember the ASU-USU game in Logan on 2016? Re: Blake Anderson??
I'm not saying you're wrong, but what are the reasons that this is a better hire than Jay Hill. I can't say one is better or worse.
Jay Hill has local connections and knowledge (not a necessity). He's done well at Weber State, I think better comparatively than Ark State during that same time.
Blake Anderson has been very consistent down there and seems to have ok recruiting classes about on par with Utah State. Nothing spectacular though. He's already an FBS coach and not just FCS.
How is one significantly better than the other?

Because a lot of people on this board never look outside of the state. I am glad this hire is from somewhere different and opens up new channels. I think Anderson can also build broader and better staff than Hill.HomeTown wrote: ↑December 10th, 2020, 11:59 amI'm not saying you're wrong, but what are the reasons that this is a better hire than Jay Hill. Was that the year we had 5 different players throw a touchdown pass (I think we had a WR throw a pass on a play that game - Pennyman?). That has to be some kind of record, doesn't it?Floppy Hat wrote: ↑December 10th, 2020, 11:23 amWells worked with him on Adam Kennedy's transfer in 2014. Makes sense to me. His connections and experience in the south could benefit the team for sure. Yes AState fans are ready. We went through Wendy getting sick the first time and apparently cured. Then the second time that ended with her death days before the season started.
He needs a reset and he had told a number of people worst part of his job is going home. Then he got Covid and the year has been utter chaos.
We need a reset as well.

I do remember that game from 2016, it is interesting to look at that season for Arky St. They lost their first four games (including USU and an FCS school) then finished the season 8-1 and won the Sun Belt. I wonder what the story was behind that turnaround. I also wonder what happened this season, they started out 3-2 beating Kansas State on the road and then just fell apart.dogie wrote: ↑December 10th, 2020, 11:53 amDoes anyone else remember the ASU-USU game in Logan on 2016?
