Maile's response to Shelley's mom

Post by Aggie formerly in Hawaii » November 30th, 2020, 9:49 pm

https://www.deseret.com/sports/2020/11/ ... -dismissal

After Shelley's mom went on an anti-USU rant, Coach Maile said the following: “Jason Shelley did nothing illegal. His dismissal was 100% my decision, not due to any misconduct of any institutional policies or rules.”

I don't know how I feel about that. I 100% support Shelley being benched. He never should have started in the first place. However, that isn't a good answer for kicking a player off the team.

I dont know if he should have been kicked off or not but you can do a whole lot of things that are very bad for a team that are not illegal or against the rules. I would love to know the whole story.

Well fighting with your teammates is a good reason
Cussing out your coaches another
Acting like a spoiled brat on the sidelines, pouting and isolating himself while the whole team is struggling would be good
My favorite:: not throwing the ball to a player(s) because you dont like him and letting that affect your decision making and change the pace of the game

I don't have a strong opinion as to Maile's head coaching candidacy, but in my mind his best selling point to date is that he took an unequivocally cancerous teammate and launched him into the sun.

That he did. It was frustrating is from an outsider it was clear this was bad. I can only imagine how the players on the field especially the offensive players felt.

My house once had a problem with carpenter ants. These ants don't eat wood like termites, but they will nest in the wood and chew and chew and chew looking to take more space for their needs. They want to transform the house from your house to their house. The carpenter ants will eventually weaken and compromise the structure and integrity of the house from the inside. You have to get rid of them.

Good for Maile.

Let’s all keep in mind that Coach Maile said he did not break any laws or violate institution rules. He didnt say “team rules” which is the reason he originally said he released him.... it’s all in the word play guys

Yeah he probably had to go, it is just unfortunate. I don't like seeing players getting kicked off the team. I wish there was another way it could have been worked out. I didn't like how it began. I argued against the decision to bring him in and supported Colombi's decision to leave when people were comparing him to Danny Berger, but I also don't like how it ended either. The "Shelley era" at USU was about as bad as anything as I've witnessed as an Aggie fan.

USU has never had a zero tolerance policy when it comes to FB players. Frank must have gotten really, really mad at Shelley. Mad enough that he couldn't see the consequences of his actions, or he didn't care. Probably both. See ya in the funny papers Frank.

Why wouldn’t they have just said released because of conduct detrimental to the team? I think that covers what Tania is saying and it’s not like we’ve never heard that before. Why the need for wordplay etc??

This is a no brainer. If he had been a young player at a different position maybe it ends differently with team leaders intervening and setting the kid straight. But when your upperclassman QB basically quits on the team (ie refusing the headset) a team can't function until that is resolved and apparantly it got worse. That cancer is only going away if it was cut out. Shelley proved he wasn't a team player and certainly not a team player as a backup (It sounds like he had been pouting all week about the Peasley decision and never had his head in the game).

You can't keeep a player like that on the team if you have any hope of not losing the whole team. What positive value would he have at this point? Their is no offset to the detriment keeping him would have produced. Frank did the only thing he could.

LMAO.. to be fair Jordan was not happy about Shelley from the beginning and posted on Twitter about Coach A’s loyalty....I get it, from both but JS would not throw him the ball even when the play called for it, Jordan was so mad one game because JS threw him a wobbly ball & that wasnt even supposed to be the play....hello dropped ball. Jordan does not drop balls like he has this season. Let’s see what happens Thursday....he’s back in full receiver mode, not just PR

Occam's Razor. Who seems more reasonable: Frank Maile or Jason Shelley?
I thought about this from a players POV.

Shelly: Jordan you don't know what you are doing. You are doing it wrong !!!!

Jordan: I have been here 4 years. You have been here 4 weeks. Which one of us do think doesn't know what he is doing again ?
LMAO.. to be fair Jordan was not happy about Shelley from the beginning and posted on Twitter about Coach A’s loyalty....I get it, from both but JS would not throw him the ball even when the play called for it, Jordan was so mad one game because JS threw him a wobbly ball & that wasnt even supposed to be the play....hello dropped ball. Jordan does not drop balls like he has this season. Let’s see what happens Thursday....he’s back in full receiver mode, not just PR
I can't wait to see it. I thought I saw that fire in the belly on some of his PR he didn't call the fair catch on in the parts of the UNM game I was able to watch.

It's good to see them get this thing rolling again
Haha, I think that was food in his belly.....he’s chunked up a bit

Frank made the call and owned it. That is what you want from a leader. Sometimes you are right sometimes you could have done a better job, but at least you made the best call you thought at that time even if unpopular. Kudos to Frank

I love how people keep comparing what happened with Shelley with past player situations - as though Frank was the one in charge of past decisions and so is responsible for inconsistency somehow.

With hindsight, and enough Shelley shenanigans pre-Fresno (if any) as a basis, maybe Coach Frank could have benched him for the Fresno game and sent the message that way. Not having a decent qb alternative would have amplified the message.
Shelley would have probably memorialized his quitting before Coach Frank had to.

But I think Coach Frank made the right call, even with hindsight, and gave Shelley a(nother) chance with Fresno. After that, no more messing around.

(But, I also thought re-hiring Gary was the right call.)

Im pretty sure Shelley went into the Fresno game with attitude. He knew he wasnt the starter the whole week til Peeze tested positive for COVID. His game was off worse than the previous ones
