Targeting calls

Post by Aggiefever » November 26th, 2020, 10:33 pm

I know the theory behind targeting is to make the game a little safer, but I am frustrated with how inconsistent the refs are, and how common sense isn't allowed in the decision making. Tatum was ejected because the guy he was tackling fell to his knees which caused Tatum to make contact to the head. If the runner doesn't drop 2 feet, Tatum's shoulder hits him right in the chest. Earlier in the game, the targeting against Peasley was reversed. What was the difference between the two?

He was only disqualified so he’ll be back next week, no additional penalties.... we’ll need him, so glad he’ll be able to play

I hate targeting. It is such a crap shoot each time it is called. I’m all for player safety, but that call on Tatum would be applauded 20 years ago.

I don't have a video of it, but it happened with about 8:20 left in the 4th quarter. The reversed targeting call against Peasley was around 9:20 left in the first quarter. I think that both should have been called based on the current rules, but I think the rule needs to be adjusted.

Just teach offensive players to drop lower when someone is about to hit them and you could draw 2-3 targeting calls a game.

I am pretty sure he will need to sit out the first half of the AF game. When a targeting call is made in the second half of a game, that is the rule.

I think that rule changed. He didnt leave the field either.

Interesting, Do you know when that rule changed and what the new rule is? (I’m too lazy to look it up right now)

I believe it was changed this season. There was another targeting call in another game this year and that player didnt leave the field either

I don't mind the targeting penalty, but I hate that the player is disqualified. It should just be a15 yard personal foul.

I hate the enforcement of the rule as well. IMHO there needs to be clear intent to hit the head area. Tatum was clearly not targeting the head, the NM QB dropped at the last second. Nobody could have avoided that hit. Either go to flag football, or make the rule acknowledge the reality of the game.

On the QB touchdown run (that was called down short of the line after replay), the NM QB clearly intentionally used the crown of his head as a ram and struck Bond in the jaw.
They rarely call this kind of hit targeting. It should be.

As far as Tatum, if he does a wrap-tackle instead of a hit tackle, he likely doesn't get called for targeting, and is playing more fundamentally-sound football.
