Preseason rankings

Post by SLB » November 5th, 2020, 12:09 pm

56. Utah State: Seems fairly simple at Utah State. If Neemias Queta is healthy and improved, he's the best player in the Mountain West. Queta is a big man whose ceiling is top-five-in-the-sport on defense. Craig Smith -- a Seinfeld aficionado in addition to a rising coaching star -- lost the best player in the Mountain West, Sam Merrill, but USU has Justin Bean and Brock Miller next in line to be consistent producers. Alphonso Anderson as well. The 3-point shooting is the team's big question (below-average 32.9%).

This is exactly right about queta.

Yeah scratched my head on that one. The big 3 will be bean, queta and Marco.

Clearly it wasn't written by someone who has actually done any research on the team. They just pulled up the team roster and some old stats and decided to half-way it.

Our three-point shooting specialist actually brought our team shooting percentage down. He had the worst shooting percentage on the team with the exception of Klay Stall who shot only four shots, making one. Bean, Porter, Britto, and Miller were all equally bad 3-point shooters. But Brock attempted nearly as many 3-pointers as the other three combined. Perhaps he should not be our 3-point specialist this year.

+1

Nemee is going to DOMINATE!! I can't wait to see him unleashed on the MWC.

Another pundits thoughts..
Interesting thoughts. I think he's higher on Boise State than I am, but I see his points and can respect that. I think SDSU is deservingly #1, but Boise is pretty intriguing.

I thought his comments on Utah State were spot on... "Betting against a Craig Smith team feels like a fool’s errand" but things are just too up in the air right now, and Sam Merrill is no longer with the team. I think that #4 spot is about where I would rank USU. I'd probably say SDSU, Boise State, USU/UNLV. With each team, it sounds like he did some good research and looking into individuals. He didn't try to all out Brock Miller as next man up and he touched on several new key players.

On Nevada, I thought his points on Meeks/Hymes were reasonable and I hadn't considered them in that way. I hadn't watched all of Nevada's games last year, so I wasn't really aware of "flashes" from them both. I saw them both as up and coming players that would definitely translate over into production.

Again, maybe I'm crazy and I know I've put this out there before, but I think the Lobos are going to be strong contenders. They have a great coach and so much talent.

I think I would switch UNLV and USU..I would probably put NV around 8 or 9. Though the roster has 7 guys who have a season of active roster D-1 experience only Desmond Cambridge has 2 years. There is good size and talent but there is going to be a lot of growing pains.

Meeks is going to be really good, though

You guys will be higher than a 8 or 9.

I like Meeks a lot as well.

Creighton (#11) and West Virginia (#15), 2 potential Aggie opponents, are ranked in the preseason top 25. We’ll likely see Creighton if we can beat Wichita St

CBS Sports (in their 1-357 rankings) has W. Virgina at #7, Creighton at #11, Memphis #29, SDSU #37, YBU #51, St. Marys #61, Mississippi st. #80, A&M #84, Wichita st. #86, and Bosie State #96. If we could somehow convince the Utes (#50) to play us, it'd be one hell of a schedule!

We won't know until tomorrow but this is how Chris Murray voted in the MW poll. He is not a homer and I think generally fair though I disagree with some of his thoughts here..

Thanks for this.

I have always enjoyed Chris Murray - he is fair and knowledgeable. He is probably the best reporter of Mountain West sports that we have.

Agreed. I’ve also enjoyed the New Mexico and SDSU reporter as well. Can’t remember there names.

I would be extremely shocked if anyone not named SDSU finished ahead of us. Although I am assuming a competent guard line.

I think this is why so many publications have USU more in the middle of the pack in the conference rankings. The guard/wing group is such an unknown to everybody. You can't blame any reporter that is being objective for placing USU in the middle of the pack. The strength and proven play of Queta, Bean, and Anderson are well-documented. Beyond that, it is a big question mark.

We had a couple first place votes but ended up third in the pre-season rankings.
