Some Perspective

Post by Yossarian » October 26th, 2020, 10:58 am

It is no surprise that Boise State has USU's number in head-to-head competition. They have beaten USU 16 out of the last 17 meetings. I was wondering how other teams in the league measure up to BSU. These are MW school's records against BSU since the Aggies joined the conference in 2013:

SDSU: 2-2
Fresno State: 3-4
Air Force: 3-4
USU: 1-6
Wyoming: 1-6
New Mexico: 1-6
San Jose State: 0-3
UNLV: 0-3
Nevada: 0-4
Hawai'i: 0-4
Colorado State: 0-7

It is possible to have success against the Broncos (see FSU, AFA, and SDSU). They should not be so far out of USU's ability to compete.

Colorado State - ouch.

Edited to correct FSU and AFA records (thanks for pointing that out)

SDSU and Airforce have taken the approach that Andersen would like to adopt, which is winning the game at the Line of Scrimmage.

So the teams in the mountain division have won 7 times and lost 28 times. They pretty much own the mountain division.

There is a tendency amongst fan basses to blame their own team for a loss while giving the winning team no credit. After Sam hit the winning shot against SDSU at the tournament last winter,, a friend of mine living in San Diego said, "Our (SDSU's) poor defense was the problem.." She gave Sam no credit whatsoever.

I could point out a number of problems with and suggestions for the Aggie FB team and I have done so in a note to Coach Andersen, but I must also say that Boise State is an excellent football team that will make many opponents look bad this year.

After Saturday, Boise State is 30-6 against the MW Mountain Division. Air Force did have a 3 game winning streak, but now has a 3 game losing streak. He inversed the record with regards to Air Force and Fresno State. They are both 3-4 since we joined the conference. Also keep in mind, Boise State beat Fresno 7 straight times before 2013 which is the cutoff year for this thread.

Fresno State has beaten Boise State 3x since we joined the conference, but has had some great teams mixed in with some real down years and avoided Boise State during their down years. They went 3-9 in 2015, 1-11 in 2016 and 4-8 in 2019 and didn't play Boise State during those years. The years they beat Boise State they were 11-2(beat a 5 loss Boise State by 1 point) in 2013, 10 win team in 2017 and also lost to Boise State that year, and a 12 win team in 2018 and also lost to Boise State that year. On a sidenote, luckily we have gotten Fresno State during their down years and thus have a 3 game winning streak against them.

The reality is you got to have pretty good teams to beat them with even semi-consistency. If we ever get our program to where we are regularly winning 10 games a year then we'll be on the level where we should be beating Boise State. That is a reason why are 2018 loss to them sucked. That was our year to win at Boise and win the conference. Oh well.

They are clearly a step above the rest of the division and conference members for that matter. I imagine it will continue to expand considering there additional revenue from tv contracts which makes the gap even wider.

Yep, unfortunately they are a step above. Unfortunately football isn't like basketball for us. Competing for the conference title year in and year out is unrealistic in football. Call me defeatist or whatever, but that is the reality.
