Re: Meet the new guys
Same as last year the 3/4 combo. I think it will be matchup based.
Not long.
Still early in the game but like I said. Bairstow and Worster are pushing for starting spots or at least lots of PT. Wouldn't be surprised if one of them started.

He's pretty tall, but he's lanky. Seeing him set screens for PnR worries me that he doesn't have the weight to back up his towering physique.

Re: Meet the new guys
He's still raw but we saw flashes of ability stepping in for Queta early last season. I hope he gets more developmental time and the coaches don't give up on him. Assuming he sticks around, he COULD be a spot contributor this year and a major asset next season. He's bigger and more talented than Dorius, he just needs to put it together and be more aggressive. Guys his size are not easy to find.Real Life Aggie wrote: ↑October 21st, 2020, 10:47 amHe's pretty tall, but he's lanky. There is zero reason to redshirt anyone. The rotation will work itself out as time goes on. But everyone will be 100% available all season long.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑October 16th, 2020, 7:38 pmIs there a reason to redshirt anyone since this year doesn’t count against eligibility?

Might as well (right?) if eligibility won't be affected. Seems like it would make for a... competitive team dynamic, as everyone will have all year to step up and get into their places.aggies22 wrote: ↑October 21st, 2020, 12:38 pmThere is zero reason to redshirt anyone. I propose the use of all 15 players, in three lines, hockey style. Five man subsitutions every media time out.aggies22 wrote: ↑October 21st, 2020, 12:38 pmThere is zero reason to redshirt anyone. Anthony will be your starting point guard on any line you want to put out there. And look at McChesney as a 3 with stretch 4 capabilities. He is definitely a 3 skill wise.

Re: Meet the new guys
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the new guys will be solid. Over the past few months, various comments leave me guessing on who will become the primary contributors.
Barring any injuries, I tend to think Queta/Bean/Anthony/Miller will be starters to begin the season. Who will be the 5th?
Will the coaching staff give Miller as many minutes as they gave him the past two seasons or will other players move ahead of him?

Re: Meet the new guys
If Miller plays like he has the last two years I hope there are players who move ahead of him. Ideally the other guys are great but Miller improves enough that he stays ahead of the other guys. Unless the other players are disasters then for Miller to stay on the court I would think he needs to hit 40% + of his 3-pointers while being able to shoot 5+ in a game. No more 1-13 every other night. Not less important I think he needs to have a better overall game including some rebounding, a few assists and better defense. Last year he seemed to be a shooter only and a bad one at that, shooting better will be the key but he needs to be a complete player as well. Without these I can see him only getting time at the end of the game when the other team will obviously foul immediately as he is a great FT shooter.

I think Miller is a better defender than he gets credit for. He puts it out there IMO. But, I do hope he gets less PT.

Miller’s lateral speed as well as his quickness seem slow to me. He doesn’t seem to be able to stay in front of his man.

Re: Meet the new guys
I'm not sure I've ever seen Miller not give it his all. Not to draw the ire of some of his vocal "he's amazing at defense" supporters, but even rewatching the '18-19 games, announcers will call out that some other guard will try to blow past him because he can't stay in front of them.
I was very outspoken about my frustrations with him last season. Given time to consider and reflect on him and his role, I've accepted some things. He's not going to be a defensive superstar, and he's going to get beat by more athletic guards. While anything he can do to improve in this facet is welcome news, it's not a matter of being lazy or not trying. I really don't recall a time when I've seen him be lazy or complacent. I'd like to see him settle into that 3-pt specialist role. He plays well defensively, but what we need out of him is offense. With other guards in the mix now (esp. this year!), hopefully that'll help him even things out and he'll settle into a good 40% 3-pt groove.

Re: Meet the new guys
I agree, he is never going to be the best defender, but he certainly tries his hardest. He is a decent defender. I hope he can get his 3 point shooting on track. If he can shoot ~40% and make 2-3 a game will be huge for the team.Real Life Aggie wrote: ↑October 24th, 2020, 9:46 pmI'm not sure I've ever seen Miller not give it his all. Re: Meet the new guys
Brock is much more maligned than he should be. He has been a starter on two very good Aggie teams. All I expect him to be able to do is hit open 3 pointers (which I know he can do even though he didn’t do it last year all the time) and play team defense.
Here’s my hot take — I think we’ll see a big leap from Miller this year in terms of his consistency, and he’ll be a big part of the reason we qualify for the NCAA tourney for the third year in a row.

Re: Meet the new guys
Well, both Fonz and Bairstow were more efficient.
Miller may have been the least efficient starter in all of D1 college basketball last year. Not meaning to pile on, but his stats were undeniably bad last year.
I hope he has a better year. But if he doesn't, I hope we bring him off the bench.

Re: Meet the new guys
Brock spreads the floor, and I truly believe this is why Smith likes him so much. Ya I get it that his percentage was down, but he put enough on tape that most opposing coaches did not want to give him clean looks. All coaches know a game can get away quickly if someone gets hot from 3. When he was out there he stretched the floor and helped create lanes despite his bad percentage. I understand all the sentiments about him, but I do think he is undervalued by some of the fan base, and I definitely believe it is too early to give up on him. I do think that he sometimes puts too much arc and velocity on his shots and that contributes to his lower percentage. I hope he can fix whatever is wrong with his shot (perhaps mostly confidence) and have a better season. We need him to be a 3pt specialist.2004AG wrote: ↑October 25th, 2020, 8:39 pmAlmost anybody.ineptimusprime wrote:Who should have started over Brock last year?2004AG wrote: ↑October 25th, 2020, 10:05 amHe was a starter on two good Aggie teams, but he shouldn’t have been. I get that’s the “theory” of using Miller but opposing coaches aren’t stupid. There’s no reason to play him tight on the perimeter when he can’t shoot.nswaggie wrote:Brock spreads the floor, and I truly believe this is why Smith likes him so much. Re: Meet the new guys
A 3-point specialist is what he is now. Only there is nothing special about his 3-pointers. You can only spread the floor if other teams believe you can hit an outside shot. Otherwise it will be Queta facing double teams with our opponents daring Brock to hit a shot.nswaggie wrote: ↑October 25th, 2020, 9:32 pmBrock spreads the floor, and I truly believe this is why Smith likes him so much. Miller has no versatility. He has no defense. He can’t create his own shot. He can’t rebound and he can’t score off the dribble. His only benefit is to hit three pointers, which last year he only seemed to be able to do against bad teams or in games we lost. We need him to be Mr. October instead of Mr. May. I hope he is able to do so.

Re: Meet the new guys
And he couldn't defend a chair! To add to your point, no one guarded him all that closely last year. He was missing wide-open looks. What drove me crazy though is when he'd pull up and launch (and miss) a three when he had a wide-open layup or passing opportunity. Because he's a vet, he'll probably get a good chunk of minutes early in the year but there's too much guard/wing talent on this year's team for that to last long IMO.utaggies wrote: ↑October 25th, 2020, 11:32 pmA 3-point specialist is what he is now. Re: Meet the new guys
Miller is one of our highest-rated recruits ever and he did something to gain that rating, so I get Smith giving him a chance for a chunk of last season. We have also seen Smith be willing to bench a starter mid-season (Porter over Ainge).
I would not be surprised if part of the reason Smith stayed with Miller last year was by the time he realized Miller was a bad shooter last year and not just in a slump is that it was too deep into the season to make much of a roster change and no one else would do much better with the lineups he wanted to run. And we were still successful as a team despite Miller's struggles.
This year I expect Smith to give Miller a chance early to show his in-game shooting has drastically improved over last year. If not, I fully anticipate Smith will increase minutes for others to give them a chance while pulling back on Miller.
