Most iconic college stadiums - your top 10?
Hey guys
I was thinking about Clemson playing at Notre Dame in a few weeks for only the second time ever and wondering how Dabo will handle the moment to not let it get too big. That got me wondering where Notre Dame stadium ranks on such a list.
If you had unlimited resources and could attend 10 games (under normal circumstances of course) what would be your top 10?
For me it’d be
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Michigan
USC
Penn State
Georgia
LSU
Auburn
Oklahoma
Utah State (as it’s a bucket list visit for me)
Honorable mention
Wisconsin
Iowa
Tennessee

Re: Most iconic college stadiums - your top 10?
Good question. I’d say:
Washington
USC
Texas A&M (I’ve been to a game there and it was amazing)
LSU (night game only)
Ohio State (I’ve been to a game there and it was impressive but not quite as good as expected)
Michigan
Notre Dame
Nebraska
Oklahoma (Also attended a game there and it was unreal)
Rose Bowl (the actual bowl game not some random UCLA game)
I went to a game at the old orange bowl which was really cool. If Miami and FSU are both good then I’d put their game at Doak on the list.

I’ve been to Doak Campbell when fsu was very good and Clemson was “good” but we got smoked. Rudest fans ever which makes me want to go down there in a few weeks to see us kill them lol

Re: Most iconic college stadiums - your top 10?
Good question. Just some off the top of my head.
Alabama (been at a game day here, absolutely crazy)
Lsu
Norte dame
Michigan
Wisconsin
Nebraska
Oregon (maybe, pac 12 football is not all in like the south but I’ll throw in a west coast team)
Army/Air Force (I’ve heard army would be awesome, Air Force was sweet)
Texas am (Texas as well)
Clemson
Iowa (the wave would be really cool)
I just love college football.

I've been to five of your top ten and two of your HM. Comments above.RockyMountainHigh wrote: ↑October 13th, 2020, 11:51 pmHey guys

Notre Dame
Ohio State
Michigan
USC - loved the atmosphere and the history, but the old girl is showing her age, and it wasn't built for football
Penn State - unbelievable atmosphere with 108,000 in white. An entire city becomes a football venue
Georgia
LSU - don't know if I've even been so hot. Shoot for a night game - our game there last year was the early start, and I think lost a lot of its pizzazz because of it. Amazing facility, though
Auburn
Oklahoma - great fans, great stadium -- tailgate scene is terrific (same at Penn State and LSU)
Utah State (as it’s a bucket list visit for me) - best venue in America beautiful setting, every seat is a good one, solid student section gets after it.
Honorable mention
Wisconsin - Camp Randall is a treasure. Fans are asses.
Iowa
Tennessee - gorgeous setting in a beautiful college town. Fans were great to us. Get ready to hear Rocky Top 1,264 times
My remaining bucket list would include
Iowa (USU plays there in 2023)
Navy
Texas
Notre Dame
Washington
Clemson
Ohio State
Michigan
UCLA
Alabama (USU plays there in 2022)
Nobody here knows anything.

USC
Penn State loved my visit there in 2001 vs Wisky -first games after 9/11 - 108k packed house -no dog in the fight and I was googly-eyed the whole time
Georgia
LSU It felt like a steam house but so many friendly fans - from prior day in NO on Bourbon St, to tailgating, post game, you name it
Auburn
Oklahoma two fun trips to Norman, activity around the stadium all morning was impressive
Utah State (as it’s a bucket list visit for me)
Honorable mention
Wisconsin I also loved the stadium atmosphere, most 30+ fans were great, younger were terrible - group got in my wife's face(with 3 pre HS age kids and yelled "F-off") many older fans who witnessed apologized
Iowa been there multiple times, a few buttheads among the Hawkeyes, but it's a fine stadium and generally a good experience
Tennessee beautiful setting is almost an understatement - my daughter was 10 when we went there to see the Aggies and she decided that's where she wanted to live. We moved her there this August
Been there would return-
Oklahoma
LSU
Penn St
Wisky
Iowa
Nebraska
Want to experience -would go if USU were there, or if I were in the area for another reason
OSU
Michigan
Georgia
Auburn
Clemson
Minnesota (Oct or earlier - i hear their new stadium is nice)
Would like to go but likely only would if USU were there -
ND
Texas
Texas A&M
Florida

Yeah I’d agree. Tennessee (specifically on the east side by Knoxville) would be a great place to live.

1. Husky Stadium - WOW what a setting, right on the water like that. Reminds me of AT&T Stadium in SF
2. The Rose Bowl - Never been to a FB game there, but I have attended concerts there! WOW! The Arroyo Seco is so beautiful, and Pasadena is one of the coolest cities west of the Rockies.
3. Maverick Stadium - Where else can you get sage brush in a stadium! The setting is so beautiful, I love the foliage inside the stadium tucked right next to the Wasatch Mnts.
4. The Sun Bowl - I've never been, but the photo's make it look beautiful out there in that desert mountain setting
5. Folsom Field Colorado - Beautiful setting right up next to the mountains, reminds me of Maverick
6. Camp Randall Stadium Wisconsin - say no more
7. Autzen Stadium Oregon - A stadium inside a pine forest is what it remands me of.
8. Rice-Eccles - has many of the same qualities as ours and Folsom, right up next to the mountains, etc., but the real kicker is the trax line right to the stadium.
Can't think of any more.

I went to a night game at LSU about 5 years ago when they played Florida. Definitely a great experience and one I'd highly recommend. Was going to go to the Tennessee-Florida game this year until Covid hit. Hopefully in the next few years.

I have been to Cal, Oregon State, and Utah State football stadiums.
Maverick is really nice, and the only knock that people can come up with is that it is smaller than the P5 places. I feel that Maverick does not get enough credit for being a nice place to watch a game and good food to eat for a sports venue.

I honestly would not put Clemson on there because of no bigtime national history. Other than punt rooskie there are no big time historic games or moments here. But places like the shoe, the big house, bryant denny, the swamp, etc have had those. But it’s of course very special to me lol

The blue is a bit less offensive in person than it is on TV, but that stadium is a crap hole. The sightlines are horrible, the concourse sucks, etc. It is one of the worst FBS stadiums I have seen (though to be fair, I haven't seen that many).RockyMountainHigh wrote: ↑October 18th, 2020, 7:59 pmAnd I actually do want to see the blue field lol

I have seen Rudy and being Catholic I know a fair number of people that have watched a game in that stadium. I'm somewhat interested in the fighting Irish, but not like some folks. Honestly if you were looking at the college landscape from a totally objective mindset, I would agree Boise State should be on the list. The blue field in itself is a novelty that you can only see one place in the country and they have one of the best homefield advantages of the last 20 years on it. I know their home record isn't quite what it used to be, but I remember Chris Peterson only lost two home games in 8 years as coach and they were only because of missed field goals. As much as I cheer against Boise State, they have been the best mid major program over the last 20 years and one of the better programs in college football. Ok I will go throw up now.RockyMountainHigh wrote: ↑October 18th, 2020, 7:59 pmAnd I actually do want to see the blue field lol

Lol!!
Well on that note.... it sickens me to say that south carolina has a great game experience if 1) it’s a night game and 2) they are good and playing someone tough. Yes I’ll also go throw up now lol!

Re: Most iconic college stadiums - your top 10?
I would respectively disagree with Boise being anywhere near the top 10 in stadium or game atmosphere. The stadium is a dump it only holds around 36,000 people, tailgating not all that much. I have been to more than 10 stadiums that are much more than what BSU has. I'.m jealous of Boise's success on the field, but not that stadium.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑October 19th, 2020, 10:28 pmHonestly if you were looking at the college landscape from a totally objective mindset, I would agree Boise State should be on the list. I didn't say they were top 10. Obviously there are more iconic stadiums and better programs. I could see why if you are a hardcore college football fan, you would want to go to a game there though.oleblu111 wrote: ↑October 22nd, 2020, 1:23 pmI would respectively disagree with Boise being anywhere near the top 10 in stadium or game atmosphere. Ok I will go throw up now.RockyMountainHigh wrote: ↑October 18th, 2020, 7:59 pmAnd I actually do want to see the blue field lol
The only time Clemson played on it it was not blue, it was white lol

Re: Most iconic college stadiums - your top 10?
Rather than BSU I would prefer watching a game at University of Washington, Oregon, Utah, YBU, Stanford, if I had only western venues to choose from.
As far as BSU goes been there many time done that do not care for it all that much, but to each his own..

Yeah nobody is saying it is the top place or even a top 10 place to watch a game. You are safe!oleblu111 wrote: ↑October 22nd, 2020, 5:09 pmRather than BSU I would prefer watching a game at University of Washington, Oregon, Utah, YBU, Stanford, if I had only western venues to choose from.

Florida and LSU are both great times. The Rose Bowl event is a great time, but ucla home games are nothing special. It is a half empty stadium with uninterested fans. Maybe when they get their program going, the atmosphere will improve.Imakeitrain wrote: ↑October 22nd, 2020, 9:34 pmOhio State, Florida, Michigan, LSU, Alabama, Penn State, UCLA, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Norte Dame.

I agree. It’s certainly the outlier. Fan support wise, I wouldn’t have included it in either list- would have bumped up Georgia and maybe added West Virginia or Utah.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑October 22nd, 2020, 9:40 pmFlorida and LSU are both great times. I just can’t deny the Rose Bowl is one of the most “iconic”.
