To be fair, almost every argument around here is useless, but that's what makes it a message board in the first place.ratofallaggies wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 7:59 amWhy doesn't everyone wait to see how Shelley performs in a few games? At this point, the argument seems a bit useless.

It is a message board, so people are going to debate big events (and small events) that happen in a program long before the dust has settled.ratofallaggies wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 7:59 amWhy doesn't everyone wait to see how Shelley performs in a few games? Shelley absolutely could be the right decision for USU going forward. I've never said it was the wrong decision by Gary. That is something we will find out over the next few months and the 2021 season. Shelley didn't come here to be a backup and Colombi certainly didn't believe that either.

I don't have time to read all the responses, so someone please, for the love of all that is good in the world, tell me why this topic keeps coming up? Is Columbi the starter at Texas Tech??? Am I missing something? Please tell me!

Has the guy ever produced a good offense without significant help? 2012 he had Sanford Sr and 2018 he let Yost run it. The other seasons he relied on really good defense and mediocre offense.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 8:59 amWho wants to hire Matt Wells back as O.C. in 1-2 years after he's let go?

Texas Tech starting QB was injured in their last game and Columbi came into the game and played well. So this thread was resurrected as some were surprised he was eligible to play this year, and some were lamenting that he left when he played well.

All coaches have significant help. I like the Bodie Reeder hire. Loved the offense on those Okie State teams with Mason Rudolph, but he'll have good experienced coaches around him. You don't think Jason Phillips and Dave Schramm will be significant help to Bodie Reeder?Madmartigan wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 9:52 amHas the guy ever produced a good offense without significant help? 2012 he had Sanford Sr and 2018 he let Yost run it. Depends. Did he cozy up to some specific boosters while he was here? Because in that case I’m sure we would be happy to take back a disgraced coach who did absolutely nothing at his past job to warrant bringing him back.Roy McAvoy wrote:Who wants to hire Matt Wells back as O.C. in 1-2 years after he's let go?

I'll grant you that all coaches have help. Two good offenses over the course out of eight years you're the guy in charge of the offense as an "offensive coach" isn't good enough, IMO.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 10:04 amAll coaches have significant help. Re: Colombi Transferring
Wow...the mere thought of Wells as the OC. Remember why and who hired Yost? When your AD has to tell you not to coach the offense and then has to hire a competent OC for you thats a problem. Wells had a a successful offense with Chuckie Keeton, Kerwynn Williams, the best oline the Aggies have ever had and experienced receivers. The only other successful year was with Hartwell's OC and a hands off order.'Madmartigan wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 10:51 amI'll grant you that all coaches have help. I'm not ready for badly executed bubble screen the d knew was coming followed by a hurry up A gap dive for 1 yard that the D knows is coming, and a 5 yard TE checkdown on 3rd and 15 followed by a punt. rinse and repeat. An 8 year old could coordinate that offense and call that.

Those were elite offenses, not just good ones. 2013 and 2014 were good offenses all things considered with the injuries we dealt with. People forget how much Chuckie was humming before the injury.Madmartigan wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 10:51 amI'll grant you that all coaches have help. Yeah the jubilation of every Texas Tech loss on here is funny considering what took place at Oregon State during Gary's tenure.stang wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 10:37 amDepends. You should next go read what was being written about the Oregon State coach from 2015-17 since you have a fetish for former aggie coaches losing at p5 programs.

I thought it was really interesting that the article in question wrapped Wells incompetence and Columbi’s decision to transfer in one article.
Columbi appears to be legitimately better than Bowman.

I was thinking this as I watched that game too.
I can't help but wonder if Wells' experience of being benched when he was QB causes him to play, and stick with, the wrong QB. I wonder if he'll ever get past it.

Re: Colombi Transferring
Look, I’m glad HC is tearing it up. The kid deserves it.
I hope Jason Shelly plays well enough where we don’t regret passing up on HCIII.
As for Coach A, I understand what he’s trying to do. How he handled the situation with Henry well was questionable, but he’s clearly trying to form an offensive identity as a balanced attack with a gifted athlete at the QB spot. Even though Henry was a much better runner than others give him credit for, he’s not in the same league as Shelly, Peasley, or even Legas.
Long story short, I understand the importance of establishing a clear offensive identity and getting the right pieces into the right spots to fit your scheme. I just hope it pays off.

I'm not a fan of upending an offense that was the best in school history. Gary lost my approval in this way alone. And I haven't seen the defense that he seems to be known for. It's going to be a long road.

Re: Colombi Transferring
You realize Gary ran the same offense last year as we did in 2018. Last years offense had flashes of good games but was too inconsistent. He is putting in the best offense that he thinks will make us successful. The defense needs to improve, but he also is changing that to more similar defenses that were successful here. Gary has flaws, but i respect he is not afraid of changing it up.AggieFBObsession wrote: ↑October 10th, 2020, 10:16 pmI'm not a fan of upending an offense that was the best in school history. This year will be a work in progress but i expect a large jump next year.

Shades of Kent Myers tripping over himself whilst an ultra-talented Jordan Love sits on the sidelines. We couldn't get inside Wells' head then, nor can Texas Tech fans now.

I haven't paid any attention to Matt Wells since he left. I didn't realize he was only 5-11 overall there. I'd be surprised if he is their coach next year.

Matt Wells is definitely the only coach that has coached at USU with an iffy track record with QBs.
Can we all just accept that Gary and Matt are good football coaches that did a lot for USU football, but that have some obvious flaws that keep each of them from being great football coaches? This is why a good percentage of the board was disappointed to see a Gary retread hire.
