New players' stats

Post by I am an Aggie Man » July 6th, 2020, 1:02 pm

So I scrounged the internet for stats on each of incoming players. aggies22 already did a great job with his post on 247 but I managed to dig up a bit more and I put it in an excel spreadsheet. I included Liam McChesney and Marco Anthony in the spreadsheet because why not.

I couldn't find full season-long stats for everybody and a few players have some holes in available stats (see: Steven Ashworth). Karson Stastny and Liam McChesney's detailed stats still elude me and so their prep senior stats are based on what Utah State's press releases included which isn't much. Stastny's are slightly different from what USU put out. I pulled mine from some recruiting website whose accuracy I won't guarantee, those were just the numbers I used because they were similar enough and seemed to be slightly more specific.

If this image's size is way too big/small, I apologize. I'm new at message boards in general and the preview function didn't seem to show alternate sizes when I tinkered with it while uploading the image.

Here are links to where I got stats for each player just to show my work. Some will also have non-senior season stats which I decided not to include in the part of the spreadsheet I showed here. A couple of these require some click-through, namely Worster and McChesney.

A few things that stand out at first glance:

1. Steven Ashworth's Assists (7.3) and Steals (3.0)
2. Vedischev needs some work on his FG% to become more efficient. Maybe playing in a different league will help.
3. Marco Anthony may have the ability to draw fouls (9.8 Free Throw attempts per game as a senior)

I'm glad you shared the info and sources. Thanks for doing all this!

I am looking forward to seeing these guys play, and there's a number of the recruits about whom I'm very excited. In particular, I'm curious about Vedishchev. I was reviewing his stats from the FIBA tourney. He had lower minutes in the group phase, and then he was sat out in the game against China, arguably the worst team in the tourney. He played big minutes the 3 remaining games, and was the team leader in points for all 3. Thoughts:

1. It looks like the sat him out against the worst opponent (China) so he could play significant minutes against the top opponent (USA).
2. Lead scorer for all 3 games against USA (#1), Serbia (#7), and Puerto Rico (#6), which seem like the biggest games for Russia in this tournament.
3. Russia finished #5, so those wins against Serbia and Puerto Rico were needed.
4. He led the team in assists against Serbia with 9. From what I'm assuming, that was a contested game against a comparable opponent and he led the team with 22 pts and 9 assists. Nice.
5. Over 165 minutes of playing time, he was 40% (21/52) from the 3. He's no Brian Green, but can you imagine if he could have 40% from 3 over the whole season? Plus, he's a freshman! He'll develop and improve from where he is even now.

Side note: as if his name wasn't difficult enough to spell, transferring his name over from Cyrillic gives multiple spellings of first and last. I just checked per the roster, and they've put down "Zahar Vedischev".

I thought McChensney was supposed to be an awesome shooter? If he really came from Prince Rupert the competition there would have been horrible! His shooting should have been much better although it is only the playoffs listed I guess.

He really came from Prince Rupert and yes, his high school competition was not spectacular. However, when our coaching staff saw Liam for the first time it was at an AAU tournament in Las Vegas that he was doing VERY well at. Liam turned down several big schools when he chose to sign here at Utah State.
