Significant Speed Upgrade on Defense
I have to think that next year we'll see quite a bit more speed on the field on the defense.
1) Moving Lefeged to LB will add a ton of speed. In addition to Lefeged at the SPUR position, his backups Gilliam & Thompson will also be fast for LB's.
2) Addition of CJ Pollard. Original 4 star recruit who played significant minutes for USC at Safety. Enough said.
3) Switching from 4 DL's to 3 DL's in the base defense and adding another speed guy on the field instead of a down lineman.
4) Emergence of the younger, fast LB's. AJ Vongphachanh, Keegan Duncan, Jaymason Willingham, Kaleo Neves, etc.
I can't wait for it.

Re: Significant Speed Upgrade on Defense
I agree 100%.
Love the direction we are going on D.
Does this effect us negatively against "smashmouth" teams like Wyoming or BSU?
Things couldn't have been worse against BSU, but we did beat up on Wyoming last year.
AFA? Is lateral speed more important than strength against the cadets? I would tend to say yes, but the way they ran it up the middle against us last year.... uggghh.....

Re: Significant Speed Upgrade on Defense
Speed is what's worked for us in the past. I hope we see some improvement this year, it looks like we should.

Last year we were somehow both slow and undersized. Glad to see this shift.

They weren't real big, but at least they were slow.

Re: Significant Speed Upgrade on Defense
Anyone have an updated depth chart? Gotta admit my available aggie energy has gone to basketball the last few months and need to jump on the football train again.
Gotta think the starting safeties with guy and shaq will be solid. Troy Lefeged was listed as defense mvp last year or something like that.
I’m curious what the depth chart at corner ends up being. Lampkin and Grayson as starters? With zahodri Jackson and Terin Adams as the back-ups?

Re: Significant Speed Upgrade on Defense
This is from another thread where Aggies22 posted it. All I've done is added CJ Pollard to strong safety. It seems likely that this basically what we'll be rolling with. I still think there's a chance we bring in an upperclassman RB but that seems about it.slcagg wrote: ↑June 8th, 2020, 9:43 pmAnyone have an updated depth chart? Also note that while Andre will still play some Nickel, he has been moved to CB. It'll be interesting to see that position battle.aggies22 wrote: ↑March 9th, 2020, 12:28 pmHere is my initial crack at it. How close? I guess we'll see tomorrow

Re: Significant Speed Upgrade on Defense
I'm working on streamlining this depth chart so it's more reflective of what we will likely run in 2020. Obviously there aren't 13 or 14 starting spots. This depth chart was pre-spring ball. I will of course be releasing my position-by-position preseason previews as we near the beginning of fall camp.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑June 8th, 2020, 10:24 pmThis is from another thread where Aggies22 posted it. Re: Significant Speed Upgrade on Defense
I like how we're playing 13 positions on defense. That should clearly give us an advantage.aggies22 wrote: ↑June 8th, 2020, 10:34 pmI'm working on streamlining this depth chart so it's more reflective of what we will likely run in 2020. Obviously there aren't 13 or 14 starting spots. This depth chart was pre-spring ball. I will of course be releasing my position-by-position preseason previews as we near the beginning of fall camp.

It felt like we were playing with 9 last year so this seems fair.brownjeans wrote: ↑June 10th, 2020, 7:32 amI like how we're playing 13 positions on defense. I hear from sources that in order to get away with this our coaches will adopt the WWE strategy of distracting the referees the entire 60 minutes so they never get an accurate count. If it works, why not run 15 or 16 guys out there? Let's see the AF run game when we stack 12 in the box.

If we are going the WWE route all somebody needs to do is run out and whack somebody with a chair, table, or the ringside bell. As long as we add Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka at D-coordinator, as in distraction coordinator, I'm down. Find him a top rope to jump from and now it's game on!aggies22 wrote: ↑June 10th, 2020, 11:19 amIf we are going the WWE route all somebody needs to do is run out and whack somebody with a chair, table, or the ringside bell. I mean, we do have former professional wrestler Todd Champion as a USU Football Alum. I'm sure he'd be willing to serve as a consultant.aggies22 wrote: ↑June 10th, 2020, 11:19 amIf we are going the WWE route all somebody needs to do is run out and whack somebody with a chair, table, or the ringside bell. Re: Significant Speed Upgrade on Defense
I think that Jimmy "The Mouth of the South" Hart or Bobby "The Brain" Heenan would serve as better distraction coordinators than "Superfly".FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑June 10th, 2020, 11:42 amAs long as we add Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka at D-coordinator, as in distraction coordinator, I'm down. I just hope Shelton doesn’t see the field much. He may have been the slowest LB I’ve seen at USU in The past 30 years.

The ones we really need, Crusher Kowalski and Gorgeous George, aren't available.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I recall Gorgeous George from back in the day (way back in the day).....when the earth was cooling. Also I vaguely remember "Professor Roy Shire") Thanks 78

Nice post. This is what has me excited for the coming season. I feel somehow embedded in all of this is improved "toughness" that physicality GA said was lacking.
