Incoming freshmen

Post by SectionBAggie » May 21st, 2020, 1:50 pm

As many people are quick to point out, it is the usual case for an incoming freshman to struggle as they adjust to Division I basketball. I can think of a few exceptions to that scenario in my 40 years of watching Aggie Basketball. But in order to open the discussion, I leave it to others.

What players have you seen that were impact players during their freshman year at USU? I am open to accepting RS freshman in the discussion.

What would you consider an "impact" player? A starter? top 8 type of player? A minimum point/rebound average?

You could add guys like Pooh Williams, Tyler Newbold, Preston Medlin and Brock Miller to the names above. They all started as freshmen.

I believe Brito started as a freshman, too, didn't he?

Brito didn't start as a freshmen, and I got destroyed by this board that year by saying that Brito has potential and would be a future starter.

Leaving the definition of impact to the individual posters.

I like the list so far. Still more out there, though.

How far back are we going?

Eric Franson and Bryon Ruffner were both impactful freshmen.

The season Tai Wesley and Tyler Newbold were inserted into the starting lineup as freshman changed that season.

As far as TRUE freshman go, Queta is the only one I can think of on a winning team.

In Carroll's freshman season, he averaged over 14 points and 4 rebounds per game and USU won the Big West Tournament and made the NCAAT. The Agges went 24-8 on the year. I would consider that a winning team.

He was by definition a true freshman, but hadn't he just served a mission?
That is to say, he wasn't 18 years old.

Yeah, I would agree that when most people say "true freshman" they are implying that the player was in HS the previous year.

I would dare say that coming off serving a mission is more difficult than coming in as a freshman out of high school.

Jaycee Carroll was great, but by the time our season ended against Arizona he was less than a month away from turning 22. Hard to consider him a true freshman.

Estes, Nate Williams, Jeff Tebbs, Marv Roberts would have been some of the most impactful players, but freshman were not allowed to play on varsity. They just had a freshman team which was kinda cool because every home game I was going to with my old Pop was a double header. Freshman played at 5:30 varsoity was 8:05 pm.
In a lot of ways it was cool because we always saw what our future was going to be like. UCLA’s team with Lew Alcindor (Kareem Jabbar), beat the vdarsity in the annual freshman varsity match up. I feel back then because of the freshman rule it made a Jr. College player all the more important. Shailer Halimon comes to mind.

Nah you won by pointing out a great player that helped us make the tournament as a freshman!
And I guess he could be described as a true freshman in that it was his first year on campus with 5 to play 4. I've also heard the definition of a true freshman being your first year out of high school. In that case he wouldn't be a true freshman.

Either way he was great as a freshman and he just resigned with Real Madrid. He is probably going to continue playing as a pro into his 40's. Good for him.

Is there a distinction between playing high school basketball in the year before your freshman season and playing "no" basketball the year before your freshman season?

A true freshman is a player using his first year of eligibility. He could be straight out of high school, an RM, or 50 years old. Jaycee Carroll was a true freshman. Period.

Jalen Moore didn't start but played a pretty big role in Stew's last year. You could argue he should have played more (no pun intended).

I don't think you can make a blanket statement about which is more difficult. It varies by the athlete. Some benefit from the additional years of physical growth. Some are hindered by the time away from organized sports.

Unless a guy grows 5 inches, missions are rarely a benefit in basketball. Especially as with Jaycee and Sam. They both went to countries that don't do basketball. I don't think either of them touched a basketball for two years.

And, therefore, the effects are effectively neutral.

I don't think you can make a blanket statement about which is more difficult. It varies by the athlete. Some benefit from the additional years of physical growth. Some are hindered by the time away from organized sports.
I'm not really sure how that is considered a "blanket statement"? I didn't use any term that would be considered an absolute. I didn't say "always". I simply issued my opinion on which situation could be considered more difficult for a first-year collegiate athlete. There will almost always be exceptions to the rule. Such as Jaycee Carroll. You also see kids straight out of high school do well immediately.

I suppose that's why I stated "I would dare say". Although I'm not sure, you're not sure, and neither is anyone else. My point was if a kid chooses to serve a mission, often times the rigors of the mission do not allow the kid to stay in shape and maintain the skills needed for their particular sport. Upon returning home they often need a redshirt season to regain their athletic stamina and bring their sport-specific ability back to the level needed for a collegiate athlete. A freshman coming directly out of high school would at least have the benefit of the continuity in training.

What about our current crop of incoming and RS freshmen? Obviously nobody has a crystal ball to look into the future and say with absolute certainty who is going to be an important contributor to our next team (see the Brito and Bean discussions as examples). But I would love to hear what people's guesses are for this group - whether they're educated guesses or not.

Classic Blunders:
1) Getting involved in a land war in Asia
2) Going in against a Sicilian when death is on the line
