Coach Smith the ambassador
We couldn't ask for a better ambassador for our program than Coach Smith. His banter with the sideline reporter for
CBS Sports over the past two years is epic and he ends every quick interview with "Go Aggies!"
His enthusiasm is genuine. Who wouldn't want to play for this guy?

I don't mean this as a knock on Dutcher, I'm sure he's a great coach, but the contrast between Dutcher and Smith on those courtside interviews was pretty stark. Dutcher's answers were like, "they made some shots" and that was it. Smith was engaging. He's got a great media presence.

He reminds me a bit of Jim Valvano in that regard.brownjeans wrote: ↑March 9th, 2020, 1:09 pmI don't mean this as a knock on Dutcher, I'm sure he's a great coach, but the contrast between Dutcher and Smith on those courtside interviews was pretty stark. Coach smith has got to be a diamond in the rough kinda find. Really though, how many coaches out there have his type of personality?

Re: Coach Smith the ambassador
The things I think about is when Smith was hired, he came all in on wanting to be here. I remember it being said he came with a thick binder and a plan. He talked about seeing the Spectrum and feeling the energy though the screen. We feed off his energy as well as him feeding off ours. He truly is a perfect fit for our fan base.
With that being said, I don't think there are many places that can lure him away with just a big paycheck alone. It would have to be a place he could be all in for. That leads me to think he is going to be here for the foreseeable future.

Re: Coach Smith the ambassador
Everything Coach Smith has done has been exceptional! The only complaint I've ever had is with some of his weird rotations (Miller + Porter vs. Anderson, Birrastow, etc.).
Oh also, he needs to get some new anecdotes for next year. If I have to hear more about GATA, NBA, or his wife telling him to play Bean more - for the third year in a row, I'll probably tune out

Re: Coach Smith the ambassador
Porter was on 1280 today and he talked about Coach Smith a bit. He said that people may think that his enthusiasm and personality are only for the TV or radio and that he's probably a different guy in private or in practices. He said that Smith is like that 24/7 and that his energy and enthusiasm is always radiating from him. He also said that he is relentlessly positive and ends every practice or game no matter how hard, discouraging or difficult that he ends on a positive note. After a rough game, Smith would always say to them that he should have done a better job and put them in better positions to win. In other words, took responsibility too. Porter said that is why they would all run through a brick wall for the man.
Also, two of Smith's players from South Dakota were at the tournament. I think that says a lot about the guy.

We might be in the minority here, but I agree with you that He might actually really like it here and want to stay. I hope he thinks this could be a forever job for him.bigblue wrote: ↑March 9th, 2020, 2:05 pmThe things I think about is when Smith was hired, he came all in on wanting to be here. That is true, however, coaching turnover is less frequent in basketball.Roy McAvoy wrote:Sounds similar to the things being said about Gary before he left.BioAggie wrote: ↑March 9th, 2020, 10:27 pmWe might be in the minority here, but I agree with you that He might actually really like it here and want to stay. Re: Coach Smith the ambassador
Of course I hope he stays for awhile and builds something that lasts even after he's gone. The reality is that a successful coach at a mid major will only be there for 3 or 4 years in most cases. You'll have exceptions of course and I hope that happens here, but I think if he has similar results next year, without Sam, big schools will be all over him.bigblue wrote: ↑March 11th, 2020, 7:47 amThat is true, however, coaching turnover is less frequent in basketball.Roy McAvoy wrote:Sounds similar to the things being said about Gary before he left.BioAggie wrote: ↑March 9th, 2020, 10:27 pmWe might be in the minority here, but I agree with you that He might actually really like it here and want to stay. The problem if Coach Smith leaves is that I just love him too much. Whatever school he goes to I'll have to become a fan of them, too. Though, much less zealous, obviously.

A+ hire and a guy who will be great at Minnesota or whatever the P5 job he ends up taking. He gives me serious urban meyer vibes where he is just the complete package across the board. Great in game coach, great motivator, great at preparation, great with fans, great with the media, etc. . .

Guys enjoy the ride no matter how long it lasts, Do not put to much stock in him saying how much he likes it here, because he is not the kind of guy that looks at negatives only positives, plus if he did not like it he would never say it.
