Thomas & Mack Center
Sorry all, I know I'm going to sound really dumb right now. It's my first MW tournament ever. I'm very excited. But!.... I was a little shocked we play the tournament on UNLV home court. I know it doesn't really matter. But for some reason I thought it was at a casino. Seems a bit unfair that it's UNLV home court.

Re: Thomas & Mack Center
Its not a dumb feeling. Lately UNLV has not been great but they are playing really well. I would not want to play UNLV at the tournament this year. it's awesome that you're going down to the tournament they are super fun to go to.

Re: Thomas & Mack Center
UNLV has won 2 or 3 tournaments at home but only against BYU. It's honestly one if the better places to have the tournament and it doesn't bother me. I don't want to face UNLV down here this year but I'm not gonna complain about the location.

Re: Thomas & Mack Center
I felt the same way until I went to a New Mexico/UNLV championship game several years ago. New Mexico travelled really well and their fans were at least as loud as UNLV’s (albeit more obnoxious.) Bring the crowd and you can negate the advantage.

Re: Thomas & Mack Center
Home court advantage isnt just about crowd size. It is not having to travel and playing in an arena you are comfortable. It is an advantage for unlv, but it is also the best location for the tournament. The mw tried to have it in denver for a few years and attendance was atrocious.

They can have it in Vegas but don't play it at Thomas and Mack! Why give UNLV a huge advantage? Why not Tmobile arena? Go Aggies!

Re: Thomas & Mack Center
A) The Pac-12 already has the T-Mobile arena for the week.blueaggie wrote:They can have it in Vegas but don't play it at Thomas and Mack! Why give UNLV a huge advantage? Why not Tmobile arena? Go Aggies!
B) The cost would be way higher. P12 tickets have gone up over $500. Attendance would suffer. I really don't think the MWC would draw enough fans to cover the cost of the arena rental.

Why not at Vivint Smart Home Arena? It would be neutral for everyone.

FYI The P12 tournament starts on the 11th and the all tournament tickets cost about the same. Go Aggies!

Re: Thomas & Mack Center
This year the Mountain West is starting earlier than normal but this isn't the week that bigger conferences do their tournaments. This is a one time thing and shouldn't happen again. Every other year we are the same as the Pac-12. As far as tickets go, i just checked and lower bowl for the P12 are $460 in the worst section behind the basket. There are some $240 upper bowl seats but prime (non-vip) seating in the lower bowl for the MWC is $250 and the equivalent for those $460 tickets are about $200.blueaggie wrote:ProvoAggie wrote: ↑March 1st, 2020, 7:20 pmA) The Pac-12 already has the T-Mobile arena for the week.blueaggie wrote:They can have it in Vegas but don't play it at Thomas and Mack! Maybe because 99% of MWC fans would rather travel to Las Vegas than SLC,Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑March 1st, 2020, 7:43 pmWhy not at Vivint Smart Home Arena? It would be neutral for everyone.

A big conference in Vegas next week. I think something about construction that happens every 4 years or so.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote:Why is the mw tournament a week early this year?

Re: Thomas & Mack Center
Now that the Pac 12 tournament is at T-Mobile Arena, it would theoretically be possible for the MW to look at playing at the MGM Grand Garden Arena (former home of the Pac 12 tourney before T-Mobile was built). Not sure what the finances and ticket costs would look like for a potential move to the MGM.ProvoAggie wrote: ↑March 1st, 2020, 7:20 pmA) The Pac-12 already has the T-Mobile arena for the week.blueaggie wrote:They can have it in Vegas but don't play it at Thomas and Mack! That being said, over the years the MW has done a good job of making the Thomas & Mack feel much more like a "neutral" location than UNLV's regular homecourt. Not only is the court itself different, they also change the seating configuration, distribute tickets equally to all of the schools, have a different PA announcer, and place tournament signage rather than UNLV signage throughout the arena. I have no problem with the tournament being in UNLV's gym.

Re: Thomas & Mack Center
UNLV has never beaten a higher seeded team (or lost to a lower seed) in any MWCT at the Thomas and Mack since we’ve been in the conference. They get what you’d expect them to get on a neutral court. No big deal.

Re: Thomas & Mack Center
Does UNLV typically get big crowds at this tourney. I would expect some out of town teams to almost have as good if not better crowds than them certain years. All my in laws live in Vegas and I’ve never heard any of them mention or acknowledge UNLV athletics or anything about UNLV. Most of them went to the U though so I’m curious to hear if the fan base is anything like my in laws there.

When they're good they get big crowds. When they're average they don't.frankiesaysrelax wrote: ↑March 5th, 2020, 8:35 amDoes UNLV typically get big crowds at this tourney.
