8-15 3 point shooting

Post by ThunderAggie » February 15th, 2020, 9:56 pm

...without Miller.

Time to give his minutes to Brito and Bairstow.

So if you don’t play Miller who you gonna play? Between the guard/wing spots we only have Merrill, bairstow, Brito, a gimpy Abel and Miller. Team needs more guards/wings and miller has to play regardless for depth.

Put bean there at times and give Anderson more minutes in the post

You might could do that but it would clog up the lane on offense and both bean and Anderson are to slow on their feet to guard a decent wing.

Merrill took 5 more shots and dropped 17 more points.

Bean had the same number of shots and scored 10 more points.

Brito took 3 less shots and scored 5 more points.

Sit him down. 2 rebounds. No assists. No fouls.

I mainly am advocating that we start Brito and then just overall play Bairstow and Brito more than Miller. Of course Miller will play some since we don't really have anybody else, and hopefully he has a good game to get back some of my trust. But from what we have all seen this season, Miller just is not a threat and actually hurts our team a lot. Also, play Anderson as he hits the 3 just as good as Miller.

Anderson can camp outside like Miller does but will hit at a much higher percentage, I’m speaking about defense, Anderson is also a better ball handler than miller and can post up about any 3 in the league

Hey guys it’s great getting a win. I agree on miller. Just disappointed to see such a complain fest on one of our players. Your points are valid but you should try to enjoy the win and not rag on one of our Aggies as much as you do. I think we all have heard everyone say it about 10 times.

Neither bean or Anderson can guard a 3. Have you seen what Mitchell at SDSU did to you bean.

It’s frustrating that this far into the season our coach has not tried to put the best units on the floor

Yeah I respect that and agree. Just thought it was interesting the stat line when you take Miller out of the equation. He is an Aggie, so I still love the dude, but just dissapointed he has not hit shots this season. We are going to need him though so hopefully he hits his shots!

I actually think Miller does ok on defense. Not an all star but does fine.

It’s a good stat my guy. Shows that the rest of the team is starting to shoot well which is a great sign.

New to forum, but have been reading along for a while. Finally signed up so I could voice my frustration with Miller playing. I don’t understand why he is out there. Terrible shooter and even worse defender. No lateral movement and is just slow. Please take him out and give minutes to others.

The problem is at this point, it’s a planned turnover whenever he shoots the ball. It’s not a coincidence that when he took most of his shots during the 1st half is when we went on a 4 minute scoring drought.

Anderson MAY give up more on D, but that’s not a foregone conclusion and he wouldn’t need to play more than about 10 minutes there per game. Miller gets twisted around and can’t move side to side. He never gets physical with anyone so they move around freely. If you watch Brito and Merrill they bump and close on guys all the time to impeded their movement.

With Porter unable to play it changes things, but Merrill can play 35 minutes, Bairstow 20, Porter 10-15, Brito can play 30-35. That leaves 20 minutes up for grabs. Give 10 to Miller and 10 to Anderson at the 3.

The three he made tonight was the only one he should have taken. It was open and within the flow of the game.

The Aggies are playing well right now. They picked up road Quad 2 and Quad 3 wins this week and were able to overcome 3-for-17 shooting (2-for-13 from three) by their starting wing. Between the two games, the only player to take more shots was Merrill.

Most teams don’t have the talent (or, frankly, patience) to overcome a headwind like that.

This is a ridiculous statement. He hasn't tried to put the best units on the floor? You are suggesting he knows the best combination but won't use it. That's just dumb.

This is a dynamic, fluid situation with various moving parts. He certainly is trying to find the right combination.

Consider: Miller, Brito and Porter aren't playing as well as they did last year. Anderson has become ineffective since conference play began and Queta wasn't in game shape until about three weeks ago. He's tried various formulas looking for the best one where the players can play well together and perform.

Ridiculous assertion.

I would argue that Bean could guard 3s on the perimeter every bit as well as Miller can and then Anderson can fill in minutes at the 4. At this point we just can’t afford to let Miller go 1-8 every game with just average defense on the other end. We’ve got two home games where we are favored that we should use to tinker with the lineup. Miller should play no more than 4-5 min a half.

I like the thought, I’m just not sure I’d take best rebounder and put him on the perimeter. It would only be for 10 minutes or so, so maybe it wouldn’t matter

Guys, guys, guys. If Miller's 3 point abilities really are as good as Coach Smith's behavior implies (by letting him continue to shoot), then just think of how many threes he's going to hit in our remaining games. The more he misses, the more he HAS to make in future games to get up to his real percentage! So exciting!

Seriously, I think something mental is going on with him. And whenever I hear a TV commentator tell me how much of a 3 point threat that Miller is, I can't help but think of the judges on the Chris Farley Chippendales bit.

He is a better shooter than this season is showing, and I think he's a good threat on offense with his dribble drive floater (notwithstanding tonight), so I don't think he needs to be benched completely.

Obviously if he continues to have permission to pop the threes, and starts hitting them, then Coach Smith is a genius and all will be forgiven.

Another solution could be to simply tell Miller to drive in for shorter shots he is likely to make.

Have you not noticed Smith has given them all a chance to earn minutes? Unfortunately, no player at the 3 position has stood out, otherwise Miller would be sitting.

Suggesting Smith has knowingly not used the best lineup combination is absurd. If you truly believe it you should be calling for his termination.

Hey guys it’s great getting a win. I agree on miller. Just disappointed to see such a complain fest on one of our players. Your points are valid but you should try to enjoy the win and not rag on one of our Aggies as much as you do. I think we all have heard everyone say it about 10 times.
It’s frustrating that this far into the season our coach has not tried to put the best units on the floor

So Miller is part of our best units? Now that sounds ridiculous to me
Have you not noticed Smith has given them all a chance to earn minutes? Unfortunately, no player at the 3 position has stood out, otherwise Miller would be sitting.

Suggesting Smith has knowingly not used the best lineup combination is absurd. If you truly believe it you should be calling for his termination.
Actually, there are a few lineups he has not tried together yet, but you will not see our best lineup with Miller on the floor, however I know better than to disagree with you, after all you are much smarter than me and obviously possess much better opinions than I.

THE END

You are the one who claimed Smith knows the right lineup but refuses to use it. You provided no evidence to back this up.

It may be just me but it looked like Miller might have been playing with additional rules last night. It looked like he after he missed a three he had to take an inside shot before taking another three. I didn’t follow as close the second half but the first half was missed three, drive inside for floater, missed three, ten foot jumper, missed three, drive for rejected layup.

It seemed like the driving opened up space for him to miss another three. But at least it looked he wasn’t allowed to just chuck bad threes over and over again.

Sounds like more shots for a streaking D1 shooter at best.
