Didn't see the game, cbssports box shows Kuba with 10 minutes. Really?

He played solid tonight. I sure hope his health is the only reason Dorius has been playing over him...

Other than taking that three and some obvious rust/jitters, I thought he looked pretty decent out there tonight.

He looks good shooting it and I’ve seen him in warmups make several 3’s in a row.

I had no problem with him taking the 3. He was open, and it's not like he's going to do any worse than we have been.

He he played awesome defense got several rebounds. We actually maintained hourly during that time frame with queta on the bench. So great job to kuba.

He was a difference maker. Hope he can play more because we could use him in the rotation. And his three had a nice form to it.

I have seen him make plenty in warmups too. The TV announcers said coach Smith was clearly not pleased with the shot, but why he would get upset at Kuba for shooting it, and yet, not get upset while watching Miller shoot brick after brick, game after game after game after game after game after game after game...is beyond my comprehension.

I share your frustration. To be fair, Kuba's job isn't to shoot outside and Miller's is. Also Kuba's attempt wasn't in the flow of the offense so I'm sure that was part of Smith's ire.

While I don't think Kuba should be taking any 3's, the fact that he took one that was wide open shouldn't be too upsetting. He'd have to take and miss 3 more of those per game to do worse than Miller but if one of those 4 goes in, we suddenly have an unguardable Miller at 7 foot 2.

You’d have to try really hard not to beat Miller’s 2-12 on 3’s from the last two games.

Miller is starting to remind me of Jonathan Tavernari. (please don't become a chucker) Has anyone noticed that almost all of his misses hit the back rim? It's like he his shooting everything 6 inches too long. I love the guy and hope he can get out of this slump.

Kuba has a nice shot and if he is wide open and it is not a clutch situation I have no problems him shooting some of those 3's.

I seriously hope this is not the case. Shouldn't the flow of the offense be designed to generate an open look? He was open! If we had a legit 3 point threat as a big, it would force teams to play defense differently on the screens (pick n pop vs pick n roll). There has been more than one big man who could do this (my favorite being Mehmut Okur). Even Gary Wilkinson hit a few here and there, going 6/19 his senior year.

He was active and mobile. A little rusty, maybe just as much the other players getting used to him being on the court. I think he'll be valuable down the stretch

I didn't say he should. We should exploit mismatches and *should* be able to take what the defense gives. If the defense gives a player a wide open look, I want that player to be able to knock it down, regardless of their size. It's not like he was playing hero ball; the shot was there for the taking, and CSU was hedging hard on the players cutting toward the hand off.

I completely agree, but you will have a hard time convincing the (so-called) basketball experts on this board. Several years ago, Lew Evans was shooting 36% from 3, and even though we had many players shooting a worse percentage than him, he was blasted on this board after every game. I haven't been able to figure it out because it isn't represented on the scoreboard, but there are many who believe that if a guard makes a 3 pointer, it is worth more than 3 points, and if a big makes a 3 pointer, it gets subtracted from your score.

If Kuba can make a some 3s (better than 33%), I want him to take some of them. If he can make them it causes the opposing team's center to make a choice - stay close to him to prevent the 3, or stay off him to protect the paint. If the center chooses to protect the paint, Kuba has a wide open 3. If he stays close to Kuba, our guards have an easier time getting to the rim. Good offense is about forcing defenders to make hard choices.

So the question is, can he make them enough to cause that adjustment in the defending center?

That would also open things up for Bean to grab more boards and do his thing. A Queta-heavy offense hasn't been kind to the Bean.

Of course, why wouldn't he?

The point I was making is that we don't run plays for the point guard to post up on the low block any more than we run plays for the center to shoot from 22 feet. Just because Kuba has the ball and is open from 22 feet doesn't mean that he should shoot it.

Of course, if over time he proves that is a shot he can make consistently, then sure.

How will we know if he can make it consistently if he doesn't shoot it?

Chicken and the egg situation here. How is he going to prove he can shoot it if he isn't allowed to shoot it? He only had one less made 3 than Miller last night.

Yes, but within context. Able Porter isn't posting on the low block looking for an open look.
But if he is wide open on the low block, shouldn't he take the shot?
Of course, why wouldn't he?

The point I was making is that we don't run plays for the point guard to post up on the low block any more than we run plays for the center to shoot from 22 feet. Just because Kuba has the ball and is open from 22 feet doesn't mean that he should shoot it.

Of course, if over time he proves that is a shot he can make consistently, then sure.
Chicken and the egg situation here. How is he going to prove he can shoot it if he isn't allowed to shoot it? He only had one less made 3 than Miller last night.
And 5 fewer attempts.

I'm not sure I want my 7'+ center taking 3s ever. Takes him further away from where I need him, in the post and rebounding. Or catching it inside and kicking it out when it collapses. It should be a rarity that he's shooting 3s. He should focus on his down low game and defense. Our offense works the best when we have a post player that can work underneath and kick it out. Defense is better all around, for every team, when there a big guy clogging the middle and cleaning up mistakes from the perimeter d. Let's work on that.

We pull the center up for pick n rolls and hand offs as it is. If neither of those options are there, and the 3 is open, then why not? They're already out of place for rebounding and inside out play.
