How Ugly was this game?
1. You could have picked 3 random blind church ball refs and taken away their glasses and the reffing wouldn't have been worse.
2. You could have replaced our guards and wings with the fat guys they call out of the crowd and make shoot in their socks and have hit more of those open 3s. And I'll bet they could foul as well too...lol
A win is a win though. But there won't be a whole lot more if someone doesn't start hitting 3s when they triple Queta in that zone.

Re: How Ugly was this game?
The refs could’ve cleaned up that game early on by throwing out a flopping warning first thing but instead they encouraged more flopping than I’ve ever seen outside of a game in the Marriott Center. So much for freedom of movement. Jorts just kept getting blown back 5 feet by guys 50 lbs lighter than him.

Would have helped if Merrill didn’t have to sit for almost half the game. What could have been a pretty special night for him was taken away by the refs.

I loved that the announcer towards the end of the game about his flopping.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑February 8th, 2020, 10:54 pmThe refs could’ve cleaned up that game early on by throwing out a flopping warning first thing but instead they encouraged more flopping than I’ve ever seen outside of a game in the Marriott Center. I don't complain about the refs, I think fan bases get caught up in that and use them as scapegoats. That said, the refs were terrible... on both sides (as Trump would say). On both sides.
Completely took the flow of the game away and were looking for fouls anywhere they could find them. That was not basketball.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. The NCAA is hurting it’s own product (which is starving for star power) by continuing with the 5 foul limit. Make it 6 already.

Re: How Ugly was this game?
From what I'm reading on the Boise forum, apparently the officiating was very 1 sided tonight. Wouldn't call any fouls on USU at all and they bailed us out. Good thing the refs were on our side.

Do you expect much different from a low iq bunch? Last I checked they didn’t have their star sitting on the bench the entire second half because of flopping.

Yeah, he basically said Queta needs to be careful because the Boise player will flop.slcagg wrote: ↑February 8th, 2020, 10:58 pmI loved that the announcer towards the end of the game about his flopping.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑February 8th, 2020, 10:54 pmThe refs could’ve cleaned up that game early on by throwing out a flopping warning first thing but instead they encouraged more flopping than I’ve ever seen outside of a game in the Marriott Center. I think the officiating was equally horrible for both teams.

I do think if they wouldn’t have muddied the waters so much with Fouls and allowing flopping Boise never would have been within ten.

Obviously you missed my post. I didn't say the refs favored anyone. They just flat out sucked and were completely incompetent. Just made the game ugly.
The rest of the ugly is on the Aggies. Hit even 25% of your WIDE OPEN threes and the game is a 20 point laugher.

How Hobbs didn’t get a flagrant for his grab on Queta in the first half is beyond me?

Or we could have put Merrill back in much earlier in the 2nd half instead of guaranteeing that he wouldn't get much playing time. I never understood that strategy.

I would have thought the reigning conference player of the year would have got a little more respect. I was wrong.

If you would have told me before the game that the refs were going to call a foul every 15 seconds and that Queta would finish the game just three fouls O would have called you a liar....so kudos to him for staying out of foul trouble during that crap fest

The refs were terrible - but holy cow do we only have two played on our team? Take out Merrill and we look like a high school team. So ugly tonight

He went back in with 8 minutes and we still had a lead. If you leave him in the game and he fouls out, you lose.freakboy wrote:Or we could have put Merrill back in much earlier in the 2nd half instead of guaranteeing that he wouldn't get much playing time. I never understood that strategy.
It was the right call. In Boise we lost in large part because Queta stayed in the game with four fouls.

Re: How Ugly was this game?
Brito ended up 4-9 and got 11 points. So there is that...but it is really amazing the Aggies won this game. 19 total fieldgoals, with 13 of those coming from those 3. 12 Turnovers. 2-19 from 3. The Aggies missed at least 5 point blank layups including 2 from Queta down the stretch. Spectrum Magic and good free throw shooting I guess.Chupamedia wrote: ↑February 8th, 2020, 11:19 pmThe refs were terrible - but holy cow do we only have two played on our team? Re: How Ugly was this game?
1) We could have had a much larger lead with 8 minutes left had he come back into the game earlier. You assume that everything would have been the same with him in the game as without.
2) Points in the final 8 minutes are worth the same as points in any other part of the game.

Re: How Ugly was this game?
I’m with you on this. I could understand taking him out to cool off, collect himself and really drive home the importance of not fouling out. But he’s back out on the floor in under 2 minutes. Those 12 minutes on the bench just about lost the game.

Re: How Ugly was this game?
I agree. Often times getting early fouls inexplicably places players on the bench for the whole game instead of playing them as many minutes as possible. It's sometimes even worse than fouling out because the coach decides to take them off the court anyway.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑February 8th, 2020, 11:28 pmI’m with you on this. I would've put Sam in at the 16 minute mark of the 2nd half and told him not to foul. If he fouls out, oh well. At least he played as many minutes as possible.

At the end of the day Smith made the right call.
I would have put him in with 8 to play though....

Re: How Ugly was this game?
As soon as they triple teamed Queta and left Porter or Brito wide open knowing they couldn’t make the 3, that is when I would have put him back in. Even if he didn’t play tough D, the defense would have to respect Sam and then Queta could avoid the double and triple teams. There is no one on Boise’s team that can defend against Queta without fouling a lot.freakboy wrote:Or we could have put Merrill back in much earlier in the 2nd half instead of guaranteeing that he wouldn't get much playing time. Re: How Ugly was this game?
It's easy to say put Merrill back in earlier and be careful not to foul, but the problem is they would have gone even harder at him than normal to get a fifth foul.

Re: How Ugly was this game?
Well to be fair they also said that the flagrant on Queta at the end shouldn’t have even been a foul. That was the clearest foul I’ve ever seen. No play on the ball, just grabbed him around the shoulders and pulled him back. Clear as day.ProvoAggie wrote:From what I'm reading on the Boise forum, apparently the officiating was very 1 sided tonight. Wouldn't call any fouls on USU at all and they bailed us out. They also claimed that they were called for fouls whenever they rebounded the ball. I don’t remember almost any fouls against Boise for rebounding. I do remember us getting called for rocky tack stuff while going for rebounds. They did have the one called as a double foul/flagrant when the Boise guy hooked Queta and pulled him down like a jujitsu throw. They didn’t think that was a foul either?

They are saying the refs bailed us out. Let’s no forget that the only reason they were in the game was bc the refs were killing us with ridiculous fouls. We were crushing them until the whistle fest began. That was going to be a 30pt victory if the refs allowed us to play bball.

Re: How Ugly was this game?
They scouted merrill really well. Any little extension with his off hand and they were flailing like they were bulldozed. Almost paid off for them. Proud of how the team hung tough without merrill. Thought our defense was great, very few good looks from 3. Our 3 point shooting was garbage, but overall most of them were wide open good looks just need to hit them. Atmosphere was awesome tonight.

Re: How Ugly was this game?
Queta’s point blank layup was him extending about 6 feet from the rim, he was not in position for a layup.hickaggie wrote:Brito ended up 4-9 and got 11 points.
