USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
USU has moved back up to #73 from #76 in the NET Rankings after last night's games. They have made it back to exactly where they were just prior to the loss two weeks ago at Air Force. That means that the 2-2 record during that stretch allowed them to maintain the same ranking. They had dropped as low as #91 immediately after the Air Force loss.
I guess the most interesting thing about the move to #73 is that USU is now SDSU's fourth Quad 1 win again.

We still have a shot at an at-large bid, but we can't have anymore stupid losses.

Re: USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
BYU moving solidly into Q1 status certainly hasn't hurt anything. Of our 6 losses, three are against Q1 teams and one against a Q2 team.
If we got hot and still lot to SDSU in the conference championship finals, there might be a world in which people see us as working out the kinks while getting Queta back and sneaking us in at-large. I think it is highly unlikely, but not beyond the realm of possibility.

I hope we don't lose tonight CSU will be tough. They kind of remind me of the Aggie team last year that's just started to turn the corner. I hope the Aggies come out play tough defense and throttle them.

Re: USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
Gonna need to see this team actually win a road game before I get sucked into this crap again. I think we've won one road game all season (@SJSU). We've shown we can't even beat bad teams in true road games.
From what I've seen, I think we will win our remaining home games, lose our remaining road games (other than @Wyoming), and finish 21-10. Then we'll see if we can pull off a miracle at the conference tourney.
Unless we can beat everyone and pull off a miracle @SDSU next week, there's not a lot of intrigue left in the regular season. Will probably just score watch until the conference tourney. Call me a bad fan, but I just can't handle the disappointment this season has been.

I believe this team can win on the road. The Florida game was basically a road game, even though it was called a neutral game.

Re: USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
It still makes a difference that the Florida players are still unfamiliar with the baskets in that gym in contrast to their own, even though they did have the short travel and fan advantage. So I similarly don't think we would have lost to UNLV at T-Mobile Arena, Air Force at the Pepsi Center, or Boise State at the Idaho Center in Nampa or at the downtown Boise arena connected to a hotel. But playing defense where teams are familiar with the baskets and have an easier time shooting threes is different than even when teams have the advantage of shorter travel and fans.

Re: USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
I'm surprised by that big of leap. I thought that might happen if Florida could have upset Baylor. No. Texas win keeps getting bigger, but on a negative, So. Florida had a chance of helping but is getting blown out by Houston.
NETs kinda a pie in the sky for us right now, but it's still interesting to see the movements of ours and our opponents. I don't think it's perfect, but it's far superior to a poll of writers or coaches (cough, cought), er I mean SIDs.

Don't look now but our ranking on Kenpom.com is up to #49. The highest # we reached all year was #45, and that was after the win over Fresno st. on Dec. 7.
Our net ranking is now #57.

Re: USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
Most teams lay an egg or 2 during the season, it was just unusual for us to have laid them so close together at UNLV and at AFA. The Boise game would have actually gone down as a good win so that won't be considered a rotten egg held against us at the end of the season by any outside observer that just looks at it as an OT loss on the road to a decent opponent. Of couse, we won't view it that way knowing our win probability was at 99.9% at the moment just prior to Queta fouling out. Bottom line is, win out and suffer two close-ish losses to SDSU and this team still gets a 10 seed.

Yep.
I'm particularly looking forward to when we build up all our hopes and dreams on this, and then it comes crashing down and a notable portion of the boards has an existential crisis. Again.

Yes. And that's the only reason we're going to lose, lol. Re: USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
Bringing up Kenpom (actually has crossed my mind a lot), I recall our displeasure at being ranked so low in their preseason ratings. It was posted that he feels that teams that come out of nowhere and possibly over-achieved like we did last year usually regress the following season.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑January 29th, 2020, 8:31 amDon't look now but our ranking on Kenpom.com is up to #49. Maybe that ought to be a disclaimer attached the the next pair of blue goggles that we purchase.

Re: USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
The UNLV game is not a "bad" loss either. It was a "b" game for us according to KenPom, or a Quadrant 2 game for us according to NET. Both of those games would've been good wins.sockpuppet wrote: ↑January 29th, 2020, 9:16 amMost teams lay an egg or 2 during the season, it was just unusual for us to have laid them so close together at UNLV and at AFA. The one bad loss we have was at Air Force (Quadrant 3).

The UNLV game sure felt like a bad loss! We got blown out by a team that hadn’t been playing well, and at the time it was a quad 3 loss. Since then, they have played well and risen in the NET to be a quad 2 loss.treesap32 wrote: ↑January 29th, 2020, 12:54 pmThe UNLV game is not a "bad" loss either. I don't think we'll "likely" lose at The Pit. I've no doubt that it'll be competitive, but I think we're more likely to win. Same goes with @CSU. It'll be competitive, and it could definitely go either way. But I still think it's in our favor. I would say we have one game that we'll likely lose, three games that will be closely contested, and four games that are notably in our favor.brownjeans wrote: ↑January 29th, 2020, 2:46 pmTrouble is, there's a lot of season left and lots of games we could still lose - and at least two that we will LIKELY lose.

KenPom has us favored in every game from here on out except SDSU but he has us dropping 3. We have a 51% chance at beating CSU so that is the next closest to a likely loss.

The amazing thing about last year's team is that they didn't lose games they shouldn't lose. We've already done that twice (three times if you count UNLV) - we could do it again.

From an NCAA committee analysis point of view, the AF loss is the only bad loss so far (according to the actual metrics they use to evaluate resumes). The Boise game would've been a good win, but we didn't get it.

Re: USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
We are officially back onto the bubble! In Joe Lundardi's latest projections, we are on the next 4 out, and the 6th team out overall. If we can win this week, we will probably be in the field come his next bracketology on Sunday or Monday.
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basket ... acketology
We keep increasing each day in the NET as well. We are 54 now in the NET today. Also of note, SDSU has jumped Baylor as the #1 NET team. If they can stay there until tomorrow, we will be playing the #1 NET team in the country on the road! No better chance to improve your tourney odds than the game tomorrow. With wins vs SDSU, LSU, and Florida, we would have a darn good resume, even though we may have dropped 2 we shouldn't have.

Re: USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
If they can best SDSU tomorrow (in my view, wildly improbable), they will be pencilled in as an 8 seed, and they’ll be in the field unless they play themselves out of it will multiple bad losses.
A win at SDSU tomorrow would be one of the five highest-quality wins in the entire county through this point in the season.
Even with a loss tomorrow, the Aggies will be in the conversation. The NET ranking might even improve with a loss. If the Aggies drop the SDSU game and one other, and then lose in the MWC championship game to SDSU, I think they are barely in. Anything short of that will leave them out.

I know the cross references of adjusting the rankings day by day can cause movement up or down for no readily apparent reason. But....how does Liberty jump up from #70 to #61 in one day simply by beating Kennesaw St. (#350)?

Re: USU up to 73 in NET Rankings
I’ve seen nothing to give me any reason to think we’ll beat SDSU tomorrow. That said, so long as we can keep our loss total below ten and advance to the conference tourney title game, I think we have a puncher’s chance.
