Mcgriff isn't in the "transfer portal". He's at a Junior College. He left Nebraska to go to ASA junior college in Miami. In 7 games he had 25 catches for 360 yards and 8 TD's.
I "had pause" because Nebraska felt like he shouldn't play WR. However, there's a myriad of reasons as to why that may not be a bad thing. Such as,
Players improve, coaches get things wrong, maybe there was a logjam at the position and Nebraska needed speed, not size (we need size), etc.

1. It would signal that our recruiting efforts are now landing us great prospects with offer lists we haven't really touched before.
2. Hearing Utes backpedal and dismiss him as someone that wouldn't have played much would make me LOL for weeks.

Re: Recruiting
Guys, keep this in mind when considering Gary's recruits: Somebody mentioned we had a plethora of "diamonds in the rough." This is exactly the way he recruited the last time. He scoured the region for guys who love to play (Vigils, Doughty, and other similar players) or guys who had been passed over for some reason (small school, out of the way location, etc). IF they have skills, Gary builds on that love for playing and molds them into good players. The other premium Gary looks for is speed, speed and more speed. If a guy is mid-sized and fast, Gary will take him and then let our nutrition and weight program build him up. Speed is the key skill and last year we simply did not have enough of that, especially on defense. Our loses to Air Force, BYU and Kent State were directly attributable to the fact that we weren't fast enough to pursue laterally and, in some cases, vertically. We have to get faster.

Re: Recruiting
Keep in mind that John Gentry played at the same high school as Zach Evans one of the top running backs in the country. I've seen a ton of film on this kid and I believe He would start day one here at USU. If it wasn't for splitting carries he easily would be a top tier P5 player. It's also good to note he comes from the same high school as AJ Carter!

“Pause” because one school doesn’t think he can play WR doesn’t mean he can’t and shouldn’t and coaches make mistakes all the time. But “pause” seems fair.
I’d take him in a heartbeat FWIW.

Re: Recruiting
this is awesome. went to watch highlights on this awesome RB and saw highlights for an awesome WR instead? I assume this is why...coaches had to find a way to get him on the field even if it wasn't in his 'natural' position? If so, then I like his attitude as much as I like his skill set and his rankingsjeffdan25 wrote: ↑January 21st, 2020, 10:27 amKeep in mind that John Gentry played at the same high school as Zach Evans one of the top running backs in the country. Re: Recruiting
While true, he also got a lot of work as an RB because Evans is a headcase that got himself suspended by his own coaching staff on more than one occasion, including the state championship game. Gentry may be a little underrated, but he is definitely known by the majority of P5 schools. He would be one of the most impressive pulls we've ever had.jeffdan25 wrote: ↑January 21st, 2020, 10:27 amKeep in mind that John Gentry played at the same high school as Zach Evans one of the top running backs in the country. 100% Agree. He did end up running the ball quite a bit this year because of that. I'm Just stating that a lot of the big time P5 schools like to see a body of work not just what you did your senior year. I think this is the only reason he didn't get some huge offers. He still has 5 or so mid range P% offers. I agree 1000% this would be one of the most impressive gets we've ever had!YoungBloodAggie wrote: ↑January 21st, 2020, 10:55 amWhile true, he also got a lot of work as an RB because Evans is a headcase that got himself suspended by his own coaching staff on more than one occasion, including the state championship game. I don't know the Nebraska roster. Are they deep at WR and thin at OLB? Maybe that's why they wanted him to move. If he's decent at WR, TE, or OLB, I'm good. We could use help at all of those.

Re: Recruiting
I believe he was originally an Arkansas commit. De-commited then gave commitment to Utah. We are trying to flip his commitment once more (hopefully for the last time)
I believe 22 has entered his Crystal Ball prediction in favor of us flipping him from Utah to USU. That's a pretty good sign, 22 has a pretty good track record on his logged Crystal Ball predictions.
As has already been stated, would be a HUGE pickup for us. I believe he'd bump ahead of Bojay as our 2nd highest ranked recruit in program history.

I think of all people, the Lord can imagine. He is a good person to ask and bounce around ideas with though.

Re: Recruiting
What you're looking at is old information. There's quite a history here, actually.
He originally committed to Arkansas, and then flipped to Utah. He was going to be Utah's RB commitment in the early signing class in Dec. 2019. However, two things happened that delayed it. Utah flipped Texas RB commit, Ty Jordan to Utah and then Gentry's grades weren't very good. Supposedly him qualifying came into question.
Those two things combined opened the door for USU. Make no mistake though, this kid is awesome and Utah is still interested. Landing him would be huge.

I believe 22 has entered his Crystal Ball prediction in favor of us flipping him from Utah to USU. That's a pretty good sign, 22 has a pretty good track record on his logged Crystal Ball predictions.
