Recruiting
So, we’re coming into the home stretch on recruiting as the dead period ends this weekend.
There are a couple signees I’m excited about, but so far we seem to have a class made up of more “diamonds in the rough” types than we have had in the past (at least the last two years). I don’t put much stock in the overall recruiting rankings for this class, since it’s so small and the recruiting services (quite stupidly I would add) don’t rank teams based on the average scores of your recruits (for example, AFA has the second rated class in the MW, but actually has the lowest average player rating in the conference).
That said, the average player rating for our class is down over last year. Need to close strong. Any updates on visitors this week or next?

Based on who I believe we are targeting, we are swinging for the fences down the stretch.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑January 15th, 2020, 8:45 amSo, we’re coming into the home stretch on recruiting as the dead period ends this weekend.

It does seem like there's several grad transfers we're really swinging for the fence with. Re: Recruiting
I wouldn't put too much stock in the current average player rating, given that 247 absolutely jobbed Kotsanlee. Take a look at the average player coming out of ProKick and you tell me if Kotsanlee deserves a pathetic .74. I also think that Noa would have received a bump up around .8200 at least if he had played more his senior year. Finally, they have removed Keegan Duncan's rating from our class because he is technically a transfer (but will have four years to play four). Add all those things together, and this year's class is better pound for pound than 2019 (which was still a strong class).ineptimusprime wrote: ↑January 15th, 2020, 8:45 amSo, we’re coming into the home stretch on recruiting as the dead period ends this weekend.

So how do you see that breaking down in terms of positions/type of recruit? How many grad transfers, where, etc. would you speculate?aggies22 wrote: ↑January 16th, 2020, 10:27 amFive maaaybe six, I believe.

Appears a page has been turned and we are now pursuing the success story similar to the first edition of Gary Andersen. This time is different as the cupboard is much more promising than the first time G A arrived in Logan.

Re: Recruiting
Great interview with Gary on DJ/PK this morning. Lots of good stuff. On of the recruiting he said they are looking to fill the final spots with the following positions:
RB - "We have to find a running back that can play next year"
TE - "An off the ball Tight End, like an H mover"
WR
DL
DB
He really put emphasis on the RB and I get the feeling they are swinging for the fences and promising lots of playing time. Wonder if we have a shot at Martell Pettaway (WVU), Trevor Speights (Stan), or Jacob Kidobi (TA&M). Sounds like they are looking for a pretty specific type of tight end as well. By H mover I assume he means H back, someone that can line up off the line of scrimmage and act as a back. He didn't mention anything specific on the other three positions but I'd guess we are looking for WR that can step right in and compete for time as well.

Re: Recruiting
I think it’s close to how Chris Cooley was utilized as a Redskin. A TE that occasionally lines up as a FB, motions a lot, can block for a RB, or catch a pass.brownjeans wrote: ↑January 17th, 2020, 10:53 amH mover - short TE? With the exception of possibly another freshman running back. I expect all our remaining spots to be filled by junior college transfers. I also expect us to add 5 or 6 grad transfers as push forwards over the summer.

Good call. It’ll be interesting to see what the staff does with Logan Lee this year. He’s a good athlete that seems to have been underutilized up until now. With Repp gone he likely gets some more playing time. I could see him fit into this new TE/HB position though.USU78 wrote:Think Logan Lee

Re: Recruiting
So is this 5 to 6 JC guys in February or thereabouts, and 5 to 6 grad transfers over the summer for a total of 10-12 new guys still?
And by "over the summer" do you mean we're going to be waiting until the last minute to add grad transfer guys to the roster, or are you just saying that's when they'll formally be announced/join the team?

Re: Recruiting
Regarding question 1, yes. JuCo transfers in February. The only way we add a grad transfer in February is if he is immediately eligible.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 9:57 amSo is this 5 to 6 JC guys in February or thereabouts, and 5 to 6 grad transfers over the summer for a total of 10-12 new guys still?

Regarding question 2, no and yes. We can lock up a commitment from a grad transfer now but they can't be on scholarship at two schools at one time. Once the kid graduates from his original school in the spring, he can then come to Utah State in the summer and be put on scholarship the first day of August as a push forward.

Re: Recruiting
The grad transfers that are currently being targeted are in the portal. What makes one transfer different than the other is whether the kid graduated in December or will graduate in May. If a kid graduated in December he is immediately eligible and he can sign and enroll with a new school in January. That will allow a school to count him toward their current scholarship numbers. If a kid graduates in May, he can't sign an LOI with his new school until after he graduates. Once he graduates he is free to sign an LOI with a new school and if the new school has room, they can count the new player's scholarship toward the next seasons recruiting class. A grad transfer can officially visit and verbally commit to a school, they just can't be on scholarship until officially graduating from their previous school.MWCFAN12 wrote: ↑January 20th, 2020, 8:27 amSo the "grad transfers" are not yet in the portal ? We've only taken two grad transfers that have been immediately eligible. OL Ben Wysocki and CB Terin Adams (May early graduate but chose to leave Arizona State in August). The others that we've taken, WR Siaosi Mariner, TE Caleb Repp, RB Riley Burt, and WR Jalen Greene all had to wait until they graduated in May to join the team.
The only way we wouldn't have to wait for a kid to graduate is an underclassman. Meaning he has only spent a year or two (sometimes 3) at his previous school and has made the decision to leave. At that time once the kid has joined his new team he either has to redshirt (if available) or sit out a season due to NCAA rules after transferring from one FBS school to another. Our most recent examples of this would be S Dallin Leavitt (Redshirted), QB Damion Hobbs (sat out) and CB Danny Gray (redshirted).

Re: Recruiting
Please note that these are only the guys we've contacted/targeted. Not guys that are coming on official visits. Recruiting grad transfers is just like recruiting high school or JuCo guys and a "big board" of targets has to be established.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑January 20th, 2020, 10:00 amSo are we targeting some grad transfers that have already graduated or are we waiting until May and see what opens up?
1 of 3 running backs are immediately eligible
2 of 3 wide receivers are immediately eligible
2 of 2 tight ends are immediately eligible
4 of 4 offensive linemen are immediately eligible
1 of 1 defensive linemen are immediately eligible
3 of 3 linebackers are immediately eligible
0 of 1 cornerbacks is immediately eligible (this kid would have to redshirt, he's only a sophomore)
