SDSU as a 1 seed
During the broadcast on Saturday night against Nevada, one of the announcers said their bracket guy at their studios (i don't remember the name, but it must be someone at CBS) has SDSU as a number one seed in the tournament right now. If SDSU were to go in as a 1 seed, would that make our conference more likely to be more than just a one team bid?

Re: SDSU as a 1 seed
no...They would only get the number 1 seed if they win the MW tourney. That would mean someone else would have to get an at large. You have a shot at that but it is far from a certainty..

Re: SDSU as a 1 seed
USU's only shot at an at-large is to get the auto-bid. UNLV and AFA did them in. Not only the losses, but the manner in which they lost did not look good.

Usus only shot at an at large bid is by not getting an at large bid?

It makes perfect sense, doesn't it?Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑January 13th, 2020, 3:41 pmUsus only shot at an at large bid is by not getting an at large bid?
I meant their only shot at getting a bid is to get the auto-bid. I think at-large consideration is off the table.

Re: SDSU as a 1 seed
I think there is still a small chance for an at-large bid but it would require us winning the rest of our conference games including San Diego State on the road. We would also need LSU and Florida to finish strong.

Re: SDSU as a 1 seed
I am leaving the at-large talk on the side of the road. It is a game-by-game thing for me now. Beat Boise. Let the chips fall where they may.

Re: SDSU as a 1 seed
If we start to look really good with Queta getting into form I think we could lose two close games to SDSU (league and tourney) and still get in. The committee will take the Queta factor into things if we don’t stumble again with the exception of close loses to SDSU.

Agreed. It's one game at a time now. Time to just enjoy the games and not worry about what the future is going to hold. My prognostication has come to an end.
I have some PTO scheduled for March 19-20 that I scheduled back in November. At this point, it's become a random date to me, and I'll see if I end up using it for anything.

Re: SDSU as a 1 seed
I think this is true. We will get some consideration for injuries, especially considering the games all happened within a weeks span with Queta in and out and Kuba our. I think our NET is salvageable but we literally have to run the table and beat SDSU on the road. If we can do that, and we lose to SDSU in close fashion, I think we will get in. We lose one more game against anybody and we are not getting at large consideration. You won’t hear us mentioned in the conversation again unless we beat SDSU in 3 weeks time.Aggie in Boise wrote:I think there is still a small chance for an at-large bid but it would require us winning the rest of our conference games including San Diego State on the road. Re: SDSU as a 1 seed
I just wonder how many conferences that have a number one seed in the tournament have only that team in the tournament. I imagine it has happened with Gonzaga and the WCC.

If not Gonzaga (they only been #1 seed once or twice), I would bet the Big West in the 80's with UNLV had it happen.frankiesaysrelax wrote: ↑January 13th, 2020, 7:18 pmI just wonder how many conferences that have a number one seed in the tournament have only that team in the tournament. Argh, now you made me do some research. This is difficult with conference realignment but I'm trying to hit smaller conference #1 seeds and who was in the conference.
In 2013, 2017 and 2019 Gonzaga was #1 seed but St. Mary's was in the tournament each year.
In 2014 Wichita St. was #1 but Cincinnati was in.
2004 St. Josephs was #1 seed but VCU was in.
Cincinnati 2002 but Marquette was in.
1991 UNLV but New Mexico St was in.
1990 UNLV but UCSB was in.
1987 UNLV was #1 seed and I can't see another PCAA team in the tournament. Yes, you have to go back to the PCAA days before a conference had a #1 seed and no other conference members in the tournament.

Re: SDSU as a 1 seed
Wichita was still in the Missouri Valley in 2014, and it looks like they were the only MVC team in the 2014 tournament.
VCU was still in the Colonial in 2004 when St. Joe was the #1 from the A10.

Did the other teams from those conferences win their tournament those years or did they get at large bids?Coloraggie wrote: ↑January 17th, 2020, 3:53 pmIf not Gonzaga (they only been #1 seed once or twice), I would bet the Big West in the 80's with UNLV had it happen.frankiesaysrelax wrote: ↑January 13th, 2020, 7:18 pmI just wonder how many conferences that have a number one seed in the tournament have only that team in the tournament. Re: SDSU as a 1 seed
A conference mate as a number one seed and two wins over top SEC teams. Never would have thought we’d even be on the bubble. Unlv hurt and Air Force hurt but together they destroyed us.

A lot of good teams have questionable losses this season. I think we are still a possibility for an at large. If not then lets destroy the NIT!

Re: SDSU as a 1 seed
I think we can probably lose no more than 1-2 regular season games in order to be on the bubble if we were to lose in the MWC finals or semifinals. We would want to win one of the NM or SDSU games and then have the 1-2 losses be somewhat close (within 10) and to teams above .500 wins or top half of the conference.
I think this is possible. Looking at our schedule, we will probably lose to SDSU at Viejas, but we need the game to be close. Then we would possibly have room for 1 more loss, but we would want the loss to be either at NM, Boise, or CSU. So in my mind we probably are not out of an at large consideration if we lost tonight, but we would then need to win out the rest of the games besides SDSU, since that game would be vs a potential undefeated top 5 team. We would probably want to make the finals of the MW tourney as well and keep the game close.
And the reason I feel we can actually lose 3 more games (including a loss in tourney semis or finals) is because Florida and LSU are performing really well in the SEC and BYU/St Marys are also doing well in the WCC. Also, 2 or 3 of our losses (3 losses to SDSU if they bounced out of conf tourney and we lose in two weeks at Viejas) would be to a potential undefeated top 5 team. We would then really have only 2-3 bad losses, although UNLV loss looking not as bad each week. The AF will be the killer.

Re: SDSU as a 1 seed
Florida beat #4 Auburn. LSU is currently atop the SEC. We still have a chance to go dancing.. The primary goal is to get an auto bid not an at-large anyway.
But let's win tonight. Beat Boise.
