Walk On Tryouts

Post by Aggie84025 » January 9th, 2020, 7:51 am

I saw a twitter feed that this month they were holding some tryouts for walk ons. Is this something that has been done in the past? I usually thought we just recruited players and asked them to walk on if the coaches thought they were not quite good enough for a scholarship at that time.

It has definitely happened in the past. I don't remember if it's a regular thing, though. Not sure if we've ever gotten anyone from them, either.

When I think of this I always think of the movie Invincible when the new Eagles coach has tryouts for the common fan.

Is that how preference walk ons come? Or is that different?

Technically speaking when a kid is a "preferred walk-on", they are given a spot on the team without having to tryout and often there is a promise of a scholarship a few years down the road as long as the kid progresses and improves as the coaching staff has projected.

The tryout means that there is at least one spot open and the coaching staff is looking for someone to fill that spot and wants to see if there is any untapped talent on campus.

In the grand scheme of things, once a kid is on the team, there is really no difference between a walk-on that received a "preferred" invitation or a walk-on that earned his spot through the "try-out" process.

Thank you 22. Appreciate your clarity on this matter and I suspect many of us posters learned from your entry.

Honestly, wish that I had known that some people actually do "walk on" and its not just the non-scholarship offers when I was early in my undergrad. Would have been cool to have that as a goal for working out and then giving it a shot. Even just for scout team or just to say I tried.

Not a bad idea. USU has an enrollment of around 30K, odds are there are probably a few under-the-radar athletes amongst that population. Isn't that how YBU discovered Ziggy Ansa?

I can't remember what football player it was, but on the Aggie legend podcast, he said that the prefered walk ons get treated better than the walk ons. I would presume this happens fairly regularly.

Kinda like how preferred immigrants get treated better than the typical walk-ins.

Not to turn this into a sand box topic, but up here in our election in October, all the immigrants that Trudeau brought in got to vote, but my wife who is American and has permanent residency isn't allowed to vote.
