IF we can beat Florida...

Post by MetsJetsAggies » December 19th, 2019, 1:33 am

You could make a case we will deserve an at large bid over the entire SEC minus Auburn. Obviously this is based on us being in the at large conversation in the first place, but to beat 2 potential top 5 SEC/at large candidate teams on a neutral floor would give us a huge leg up over a conference that usually gets 6-8+ bids on selection sunday. They'll be beating up on each other in conf play but it won't change our 2-0 mark. Kentucky might very well lose 2 more in OOC after tonight's loss, and their NET was already low at #66.

Pretty huge spot for our guys on Saturday. If we can pull it off and stay the course towards a MWC-play record worthy of an at large bid (this all goes out the window if we don't, which goes without saying) then come selection Sunday it will be tougher for the committee to keep us out, unless you make the SEC a 3-4 bid league this year which could happen I guess. Probably helps SMC and BYU out in that regard as well.

Brito and Miller have not been great the last three weeks. However, it seems the bigger the game the better Brito plays. Hopefully that proves true.

I hope to see our team play better. We haven't looked good in weeks. Shooting is bad, defense is okay. We won't be in at-large position if we don't improve.

IMO this game is a near must win with regards to at large with the NCAA tournament given we’ve lost to BYU and st. Mary’s.

I think we can win and I think we need to.

I think at this point our conference play will determine if we make the tournament. We haven't been impressive. Even in our wins.

I think you are right. Team Rankings says that we have a 49% chance of bearing Florida. It has us winning all of our conference games except one (SDS away). That’s a tall order. This game is big.

That much we can both agree on. Also, beating SDSU in San Diego would help. Not losing in the MWC tournament first game also.

I saw Kuba dressed on the sideline last night. Does anyone know how close he is to playing? He buzzed his head so I didn’t recognize him

I was at the game, and saw Kuba warming up. He looked good, and I was surprised he didn't play. We certainly could have used another big man in the game.

I’ve been waiting for someone to finally respond to my Kuba question. That is good to hear and hopefully he can get in against Florida. I imagine there is a possibility he plays or else he wouldn’t have traveled with the team. Maybe they thought we had enough height advantage against UCF and wanted to wait until Florida so he had a few extra days to heal.

On the other hand, perhaps we just wanted to impress people when we get off the team bus. ;)

Florida is a 2 point favorite in Vegas.

From the time he was hospitalized I heard 4 to 6 weeks.

Smith said that following his surgery Kuba would be out from 3 to 6 weeks. His surgery was on Nov. 26. At least that’s when his foto in the hospital was snapped. That means his window would be December 17 to January 7th. He may very well be cleared to play against Florida, but there would be some rust having sat out 3 weeks. I suspect we won’t see him until January, but that’s only my guess.

Bump

Still think this might be our saving grace for an at large bid. Can you put both LSU and Florida in and not us when we beat both on a neutral and they're only 5/6 spots ahead of us in NET?

There are also some equally iffy resumes around us like Purdue, Northern Iowa, Alabama, ETSU
