Enoch Nawahine
He made some disruptive hits on ST. I thought the plan was to RS him and that's what he wanted to do. If he's not RSing, will we see him in the RB rotation?

Re: Enoch Nawahine
I thought I saw him active against BYU as well, which would put him above the 4 game limit provided he plays the rest of the season.

Re: Enoch Nawahine
Per the official website, he's played in 6 games, although only has carries in three. Why would we play him past the four-game limit just to use him on special teams (or maybe he was in an offensive set and didn't get a carry or a target in the other games ?)
Nobody here knows anything.

Yep. No redshirt for Enoch or AJ Carter.OKAggie wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 11:17 amPer the official website, he's played in 6 games, although only has carries in three. Now that he's past the four game limit, I think we would see Enoch over Burt in the rotation, if Bright or Warren were injured or reinjured.Madmartigan wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 10:44 amHe made some disruptive hits on ST. Both sure seems like they have the potential to be a Borel-type mistake for sure.

I don’t think it is that big of deal, you earn your stripes on special teams. You have to start somewhere.

Re: Enoch Nawahine
This is my thought as well. So long as the players are happy with the situation then I am fine with it. Enoch is doing great on special teams and come next year I think he will be able to fill in for Bright and give us a good 1-2 punch.USUstudent13 wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 11:49 amI don’t think it is that big of deal, you earn your stripes on special teams. What mistake was that? Would you rather have had Borel or chuckie and Adam Kennedy in 2011?

Why would we not want four years of quality production, instead is just three?Aggie84025 wrote:This is my thought as well. So long as the players are happy with the situation then I am fine with it. Re: Enoch Nawahine
IIRC, what 22 and others said was that Enoch stood out (in a good way) in both camps and that the staff and his parents wanted him to RS to have an extra year to develop. No idea what Enoch was promised/wanted, but I was surprised to see his RS getting pulled based on those early reports.ratofallaggies wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 12:26 pmno one has any idea what was promised during recruiting... Re: Enoch Nawahine
That’s assuming a redshirt freshmen would give you quality production his first year playing. Perhaps experience playing in games and on special teams is more valuable than having a redshirt year. Clearly the coaching staff thinks that Enoch and AJ Carter will be better off having a year of experience on special teams than red shirting. The case is different for every player.2004AG wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 12:18 pmWhy would we not want four years of quality production, instead is just three?Aggie84025 wrote:This is my thought as well. Re: Enoch Nawahine
This is a good question. Borel was not surrounded by a whole lot of talent or at least functioning talent or coaching his Senior year so it's hard to judge. I loved watching both him and Chuckie play.
My point was more that it would have been nice to not burn an entire year of eligibility for him to only have 6 touches in meaningless plays as a KR/WR in his freshman year. I'm glad they changed the rule and now allow so much playing time while still being able to retain a redshirt season.
I only hope we don't look back at Nawahine as a Senior and wish we could have him as a proven starter for one more year but can't because he was part of ST's coverage team for a few too many games as a Freshman.

All I know is what I was told. Obviously, the coaching staff is free to change their mind at anytime.Madmartigan wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 12:30 pmIIRC, what 22 and others said was that Enoch stood out (in a good way) in both camps and that the staff and his parents wanted him to RS to have an extra year to develop. Re: Enoch Nawahine
Enoch had his redshirt pulled because we couldn't keep Jaylen on the field for parts of 4-5 games and we obviously didn't feel comfortable with Riley Burt as the lone backup to Gerold. Given that his RS was used up as a replacement for Jaylen, they may as well use him as much as possible now.
Besides, I like to see young guys that can break into the ST groups. Think of all the guys that got their start as freshmen on kickoffs and ended up being all-conference players for us.

Re: Enoch Nawahine
How is it a waste of one year? Maybe the kid doesn't want to redshirt. I'm reminded of Pat Tilman's statement to Bruce Snyder when told Snyder intended to redshirt him as a freshman: "You can redshirt me if you want to, but I'm out of here in four years. I've got things to do with my life." (paraphrasing)

Re: Enoch Nawahine
I suspect the Burt scholarship was an indication of how thin we were at R B for this season. Nawahine playing now is a confirmation of that reality. Burn a shirt to salvage a season.

Re: Enoch Nawahine
But he’s not playing RB. He’s playing a little special teams. We might be thin at RB but that’s a separate issue unrelated to the kickoff coverage team.NavyBlueAggie wrote:I suspect the Burt scholarship was an indication of how thin we were at R B for this season. Re: Enoch Nawahine
Point well taken 2004, yet we're not sitting in the coaches meetings and the reason(s) E N isn't taking more snaps remains obscure to so many of us. We may expect to see some post season staff turnover.

Re: Enoch Nawahine
If he makes us better and increases our odds of winning games, seems like having him sit is a waste. Its not like we are trying to throw this year away and build for next year. Plenty of reasons to try and win now.

Re: Enoch Nawahine
There are 20 other kids, including walk ons that could cover kicks. I’m not a coach, but burning his red shirt and not getting carries is a complete waste unless the kid asked not to redshirt.

Re: Enoch Nawahine
I agree with the idea that our team wants to win every game and if the coaches feel like they need him in on special teams and he is ready then all hands on deck. The kid made some huge tackles that put Fresno in bad possessions and he was really amped. The kind of energy our team seems to be missing this year. Anyway don’t you think game experience help confidence. I’m not sure that is really wasting it. Not very many position players on the field is a 4 year starter.

Re: Enoch Nawahine
Honest question — what has Nawahine shown thus far that makes anyone think he’ll be a legitimate RB1 option we should be concerned about burning a RS year on?
Not saying he can’t develop into that player, but I’ve been pretty underwhelmed with the limited carries he’s gotten, especially based on preseason reports. Maybe I’m not being fair — the sample size is pretty small.

Re: Enoch Nawahine
In many of the fall camp practices that I watched there were many times that I felt like he might be our second-best running back. He hit the hole quickly, with power, breaks tackles at the line of scrimmage and he can catch the ball out of the backfield like a slot receiver.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑November 14th, 2019, 7:28 amHonest question — what has Nawahine shown thus far that makes anyone think he’ll be a legitimate RB1 option we should be concerned about burning a RS year on?

Re: Enoch Nawahine
16 carries is not much of a sample. ‘22 isn’t the only one that said he stood out in fall camp. Game experience is huge, but kick coverage does back crap for giving kids game experience. I dint see how running down the field covering a kickoff helps show the game down for a running back so he can hit the right hole harder.
I’m not criticizing the decision to play him because I don’t know what is being said between the kid and the coaches.
