Catch of the Year

Post by cdaAg » November 9th, 2019, 8:33 pm

I think we now have a solid contender to challenge Mariner's catch against WF as the best catch of the season. Nathan's grab between two defenders, getting absolutely popped, hanging on with one hand as he hit the ground hard, was absolutely amazing. I was surprised to see him back in the game later. What a snag!

The play against LSU where Mariner was injured was one heck of a grab.

That was some serious concentration by Nathan on that one. This was so much more fun to watch tonight.

Tania,

You must be so proud. Catch of the year for me. His toughness to hold onto the ball was off the charts to control possession. He has awesome hands.

Sorry to hear that. To be able to come back in with having gone through that just shows you how much he wants to help the team win. Truly an inspiration.

It was honestly one of the best grabs I've ever seen. Difficulty level 10. Crazy he could haul that in.

That was clutch. There were a lot of plays that had to be made or we lose the game. This was one of them.

Would this have been a defenseless player call in the NFL on #14?

It is definitely contact to the head/neck of a defenceless player.

Every time I watch that, the degree of difficulty goes up another tick. Tightly defended by #2, targeted by #14, tremendous concentration to catch it, tremendous toughness to hold on. Very Matt Austin-like!

Incredible catch. Really happy for J. Nathan. He seems to be the guy Sanford puts in to make the toughest catches. Love hasn't always given him a chance. A lot of the throws his way look like throwaways.

Seems to be the guy that Sanford didn’t know was on the team until the last few weeks. Seems to be figuring a few things out.

Calling #14 for targeting would be a stretch. Once bodies are launched, a good deal of the ability for relocating and redirecting contact is lost. Incidental contact would be a reasonable non call, and the officials in real time saw it the same way. Brilliant and gutsy catch by any standard though, absolutely first class and should be on the post season highlight replays.

I disagree with the no call after looking at the replay. How is that not targeting? Jordan is defenseless and #14 leads with the helmet. What is crazy is that they didn't even look at it.

#14 didn't lead with his helmet. He hit him mostly with his shoulder. I wouldn't want that called on us, so I won't ask for it to be called in this case.

I wouldn't want it called on us either, but per the rule it was borderline if not technically targeting. Leading with the helmet isn't the only factor. It's a difficult rule because it's football and there is going to be some hard hits.

Here is the rule explanation from SI:
Targeting does not solely occur when players initiate helmet-to-helmet contact. It's defined as occurring when a player "takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball." Instances include, but are not limited to:
  • Launch--a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area.
  • A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground.
  • Leading with helmet, shoulder forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area.
  • Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of his helmet.

Well, he's not harping on it...the kid had XRays yesterday & has no fractures - he is getting treatment for the soreness from the dislocation. I was more concerned about a possible concussion but he's fine, still the same grumpy character I love so much
