Dr. Chris Hill
Is one of the dumbest and most pathetic doctors I've ever seen!
There's an article today in the Desnews about the basketball series being on hiatus and they've got lots of quotes from "The Doctor" that just make me wanna puke. http://www.usufans.com/News/4987
Hill wants to speak with other Pac-12 schools to learn how many nonconference road games they play and how they build their RPI.
Utah has known for over a year now that they'd be moving into the PAC-12 and The Doctor still hasn't found the chance to talk to the other programs about OOC scheduling? You want to build your RPI Doctor? Then schedule a team that has a great RPI that will boost your team's RPI win or lose. Try using that incredible intellect of your's Doc!
As such, he's floated an idea with Utah Jazz officials and BYU athletics director Tom Holmoe about bringing the Utes, Cougars, Aggies and Weber State together at EnergySolutions Arena to start each season in an effort to build some excitement and allow the teams to play each other.
Okay, so suddenly the Doc sees a way for the series to continue, but only if it involves never going to Logan or Ogden again? 1 + 1 still equals 2 right? So if the Utes were to play the lowly Aggies and Cats every year, but in the ESA (which happens to be an even more convenient drive for Ute fans) wouldn't that still add up to two games? Isn't the Doc's original concern about not being able to find space for USU and WSU on the schedule? Yo Doc! Whether the game is played in Logan or in the ESA, it still counts as a game!
On this topic, I think an all Utah tournament featuring the 4 big in-state teams is a terrible idea. Especially if it is only going to be played in SLC. The instate games are some of the best home games for any of the state teams, so why take those games off of the campus? Everybody is always concerned about season ticket sales, well one way to kill those is to make your home schedule even less appealing. I wonder if the Doc would be so interested in this tournament idea if the location rotated each year? My guess: he'd have to talk with the other PAC 12 schools and see what they think.

Re: Dr. Chris Hill
Lately whenever I hear “Dr. Chris Hill” I think of the scene from the hangover where the guys are picking Stew up, and they “page” him. I would post it, but I am afraid it would result in disciplinary action.
Anyway, if they do not want to play us, fine. We should not really expect anything from them. But this statement is ridiculous.
“Hill wants to speak with other Pac-12 schools to learn how many nonconference road games they play and how they build their RPI.”
It really is not that complicated to look at PAC12 teams with good RPI’s and check out their scheduling over the past several years. I am not sure why he would need to speak with them to get that information.
Bottom line, it is not good for a PAC12 team get beat by a WAC team. I am pretty sure that they realize that they have a few down years ahead, and losing to us is not going to help their cause.

Re: Dr. Chris Hill
God, I hate to admit I heard them talking about this on 1320 this morning... I think it was Britton Johnson on with PK, They actually both had good things to say about USU, and they think its too bad this series is on sabbaticle for who knows how long- hopefully its just one year. They said when Boylen talked to Stew about rescheduling he supposedly said "PAC12 teams don't go on the road to play WAC teams" and Stew said. "Boylen, I wouldn't worry too much about the PAC12" haha-
Hopefully Utah will feel some pressure to play us again in the future, but unless they can get a good competative team who really cares?

Good point Chaos. Right now they're RPI killers. I don't like them putting the All Utah Tourney idea into BYU's head though. We need to keep that home and home.

Re: Dr. Chris Hill
My take on what Mr. Hill is quoted as saying is that he has no intention of ever playing a game in Logan again.
Let the history of the rivalry be written thus: After nearly 100 years of competition between Utah and Utah State,
Utah outgrew the rivalry and became a member of the PAC-12. Utah State was no longer seen as a worthy opponent.
Utah got just too good. The final game of the series was played in Logan, and won by Utah State, 79-62.

No chance to figure how to schedule in the PAC 12 but plenty of opportunity to figure out how to "float ideas" for a state schools tournament in their backyard ... total BS. Re: Dr. Chris Hill
Does Utah realize they aren't a PROVEN PAC-12 team? I wouldn't want to play a 2-1 with Oregon State... If Utah wants to schedule the Michigan States, then fine... let them lose... Utah is currently the 3rd best team in the state... At the end of the day USU consistently plays at the top of its conference, and Utah wasn't always in championship talks in the MWC... USU has proven it can beat Utah (in recent history)... I dont buy into people that think that Duke or G'Town is scared of Logan, but Utah should be... its been shown they have difficulty winning here.

BYU needs us for their football schedules, so I have to think that Barnes will use it as a little leverage to keep that series a home and home...I hope.hipsterdoofus21 wrote:Good point Chaos. Guess I should have said, I wish I would have called him then cause now it's too late. Not that it would have done much back then but calling him now he'd probably just say hmmm...okay....yeahhh, k thanks bye and not even listen. Heck, he hasn't even talked to Barnes about it. The whole thing just pisses me off good.ProvoAggie wrote:I still have the e-mail with his personal phone number. If the in state tourney is in the plans, who about the team that wins it, gets to host it the next year, or is Utah so great that they get all the perks, and the rest of us should just be happy that the U will let us play with them!

I for one do not mind the idea of a State of Utah Tournament. How about the idea of rotating the venue? Maybe we could have it at a decent time, and not when all of the students have gone home???

Re: Dr. Chris Hill
They'd never rotate the tourney to Logan, you know that. The Doctor already hinted that it would be a media driven decision, which means SLC, or at the very least Provo. The funny thing is, the only team that needs to grow fan support for the rivalry games is Utah, so this idea really only benefits them.
I'd be okay playing a BCS team in SLC, but whats the point of playing Utah every year in the ESA? Might as well be at the Huntsman.

Re: Dr. Chris Hill
Since it is "media driven," then with Dave Fox wanting UVU in the WAC, have UVU in the tourny in SLC oh and Greg Wrubel once took a dump in Cedar City so SUU should be included. We should do what ever is best for the media and not 100 years of tradition. I forgot the good doc is bigger that the traditions. Gary Crowton put a stop to the media football huddle luncheon in Salt Lake with the 5 college football (yes, C. Ray Gregory from SUU used to drive to it as well as the other four Wasatch Front teams) coaches at Diamond Lils and other locations. Gary was bigger than that tradition. Gobel used to fly Charlie and then John L to the luncheon in his chopper. Funny how the media card gets played by institutions......

it is a video with a gay slur.
Re: Dr. Chris Hill
Fine, if this is how this is going to go, then let's play it in a five year rotation so no one gets completely screwed: Logan, Ogden, The U, Energy, and Provo, with the home team (and an extra 5,000 seat allotment) rotating when the game is at Energy Solutions. And sign a 10 year contract with each school to assure at least two complete rotations through the five venues.

Re: Dr. Chris Hill
Actually, if Hill is concerned about RPI effects of playing USU - and specifically of playing USU in Logan - he ought to know that a loss to USU at the ESA hurts his team's RPI more than a loss in Logan does (.6 of a loss in logan vs 1.0 loss on "neutral" site per the "adjusted win" portion of the RPI formula), and a win in the ESA helps his team less than a win in Logan (1.0 win in ESA vs. 1.4 wins in Logan if they ever manage to win there). So he's better off playing us in Logan as opposed to a neutral site, all else equal. Either way, win or lose he adds a game against a team that is in the top 40 RPI on average every year for the past decade or more, so playing USU only helps your RPI by strengthening its SOS significantly over playing someone like Boise State, Fresno State, or CS-Fullerton (those teams' records won't do much for your SOS, Dr. Hill). It goes without saying that playing a team like USU with its average of 25+ wins per season will boost Utah's RPI. Maybe someone needs to explain the RPI formula to Dr. Hill, it is really a pretty simple concept.
I'm a reasonable man, get off my case.

So his idea for building RPI is to avoid playing any OOC games @ teams with good RPI, and instead bring them all to their campus, or nearby neutral courts.
We should say no to any such tournament.

Re: Dr. Chris Hill
I doubt any Utah fans would show up to a game at the ESA... They can't get their own fans at the Hunstman Center. Utah sucks and they most likely will continue to suck for quite a few years in the PAC12. They were one of our worst RPI opponents last year. Sure I want the games to continue in the future, but I'm not to hurt that they would want to schedule more winnable games right now. Utah in my opinion has been a much more friendly and willing opponent thatn BYU ever has. Not that that is saying a whole lot but I don't think Utah would lie, cheat, squirm and weasel its way into the upper hand in every situation like BYU. Maybe them going to the PAC12 will change all that, but I bet they come back to play us when they aren't a horrible team anymore.

great point Chaos, which explains why Dr. Hill would be interested in splitting the profit from a 4 team tourney, cause he's making nothing at the Huntsman right now.
