National Title Odds

Post by ThunderAggie » September 19th, 2019, 1:48 pm

CBS Sports just updated their National Title odds and our odds have gone from 200-1 to 100-1. We are also included as the number 5 in "Long Shots" to bet on. This is crazy! We have the same odds to win title as Texas, Marquette, Iowa State, Wisconsin, UCLA, etc. Just to put to perspective, BYU has 1000-1 odds and Utah has 500-1 odds.

So it looks like we have better odds than every team on our schedule except for Florida.

I would be REALLY happy just winning one tourney game since it’s been so long. I would be ecstatic with a Sweet 16. Anything more would be mind-blowing.

Utah was awful last year and I believe they lost a bunch of transfers as well. Not sure how they really even have odds.

Speaking of odds, what are our odds of retaining Coach Smith after this season if we win one or more games in the NCAA Tourney?

If I were a betting man I'd be looking at odds around here:

Lose in Round of 64: 5% chance Smith leaves
Win Round of 64: 10% chance Smith leaves
Win Round of 32 w/o significant pay bump: 25% Smith leaves
Win Round of 32 w/ signifcant pay bump: 15% Smith Leaves
Win Sweet 16: 50% Smith leaves
Win Elite 8: 85% Smith leaves
Win Final a Final 4 Game: 91% Smith leaves
Win National Title 97.5% Smith leaves

Larranaga, Shaka Smart, & Brad Stevens all went to the Final 4 and returned to the school for a bit longer. It is not a given Smith will leave.

Depends on how much bread we throw on the table. If we can pay enough, I don't see him leaving except for maybe to coach closer to home. I think Smith prefers small towns over big cities, plus his family is at a bad age to be moving around the country too much. I'd be very surprised to see him take a high major job in Miami, or LA, or somewhere like that. Who knows tho.

There are a lot of great schools in small towns, though.

1. There are a lot of MAJOR universities that are in college towns. (It's why they are called college towns).
2. You can work in a major city and still have your family be fairly secluded from city life. Coral Gables isn't exactly similar to downtown Miami- and Pacific Palisades or Brentwood would not be a terrible commute to USC (and would be a great commute to UCLA) - and would be in very good areas.

Does anyone get concerned about complacency with this team stemming from this amount of hype. We bring back a lot of last year's team who pretty much got it handed to them against Washington. I hope the team is not buying into all this hype. I love the is team and think if the new guys come along and Queta gets healthy we can potentially win 1 maybe 2 games in the tourney. I am super excited about the year, but am not as sold on all these preseason accolades.

I was Wendover a few weeks ago and they were 150/1, but went to bet it when I was out there last week and it had dropped to 100/1. Bet it anyway :)

I'm not concerned about complacency with Smith at the helm. We will definitely be better than we were last year, if we can stay healthy. However, our schedule is more difficult this year and I think that the teams in the MWC will be better than they were last year. Therefore, our record will likely not be as good as it was last year.

I am interested in your position that the MW will be better this year than last. What is your evidence for that? I think you guys will be better but I don't see any other team being much better, if at all, than they were last season.

Just got the new Street & Smith’s hoops magazine. Sam Merrill is on the cover. That has to hurt Southern neighbors.

This is a can’t lose bet. It would be the easiest one dollar I ever made.

Boise, CSU, UNM, UNLV will be better. Reno and SDU will be worse but still have some horse’s.

All based on nothing.

So I could bet $100,000 on BYU-P to NOT win the national title and win $100? Sign me up!

If anyone is concerned about complacency, they obviously haven't met Craig Smith.

I'm a reasonable man, get off my case.
