SDSU's Vaunted Defense

Post by Roy McAvoy » September 16th, 2019, 2:36 pm

Bill Connelly's SP+ ranking system currently ranks SDSU as having the 6th best defense in the nation so far this year. His system uses advanced analytics to account for variables such as SOS.

By just numbers alone, SDSU is also ranked:
- 4th in the NCAA in Rushing defense at 42 yds a game.
- 11th in total defense at 248 yds per game
- 4th in scoring defense at 8 points a game
- 10th in total possession at 35 minutes TOP per game
- 7th in turnover margin

Very impressive defensive statistics,,,outstanding. This game should be very entertaining and likely a bruising contest with both defenses ready to play smash mouth football. Could end up being a one (1) score margin.

If we could get a special teams touchdown that would be massive in this game.

SDSU usually has a very good D. I view this year's numbers recognizing that they have played Weber St, UCLA, and NMSU so far. I can't do advanced analytics, so I just looked at performance relative to how the opponents' O has performed in other games.

Weber had 151 yards (0 points) against SDSU, had 137 (13 points) against Nevada and 457 (41 points) against Cal Poly
UCLA had 261 yards(14 points) against SDSU, had 218 (14 points) against Cincinnati and 201(14 points) against Oklahoma.
NMSU had 329 yards (10 points) against SDSU, had 317 against Washington St (7 points) and 262 (10 points)against Alabama.

These numbers don't mean that much since lots of factors go into these games. However, all three of of SDSU's opponents have put up better numbers against the other FBS teams on their schedules. I am not disagreeing with Connelly or the OP, just some wishful thinking on my part as I remember the last few beat-downs we endured against SDSU. 2010, 41-7; 2015 48-14; 2016 40-13. We finally did it in basketball, so I'm hoping it's football's turn.

this is why i am ok with having the off week in week 3. it lets us prepare specifically for this game, which will set the tone for our season. are we playing catch up with boise, hoping they lose? or are we controlling our own destiny to the CCG?

NMSU started having their way on offense in the 2nd half but they couldn't quite put it into the EZ. We won't have the same problem. We'll start to wear them down with our no-huddle, hurry up offense.

Dare I say that our Defense is likely better than Weber's?

SDSU's vaunted defense has given up 330 yards to an awful New Mexico State team. NMSU put up 299 passing yards against that amazing defense. If you believe that our offense wont put up over 400 yrds of offense you're nuts. New Mexico state's problem was they turned it over 4 times and could not put the ball in the endzone and they suck a$$ is the other problem.

[I did not watch the game, was NMSU moving the ball well with the first string SDSU defense in or were a lot of their yards in garbage time against back ups?]

NMSU's passing yard were against the SDSU first string Defense but they came late in the 3rd and 4th quarter after SDSU was up 24-0 at which time NMSU had 72 yards of total offense.

This is why it’s important to look at context and at least a layer deeper with stats.

With 8 minutes left in the third, NMSU was down 24-0 and had 55 yards total offense. All of those 275 of those 330 yards you mention came after SDSU had a 24-0 lead halfway through the 3rd quarter.

It seems possible the coaches started rotating in more backups and the defense relented a little after the game was seemingly in hand.

Or you can just ignore that and continue to think SDSU sucks I guess. That would imply anything good our football team does against them doesn’t carry much weight because SDSU isn’t any good anyways, right?

I wasn't implying that SDSU sucks. I was saying NMSU sucks a$$. while SDSU is a decent team I feel that alot of people on this board are acting like we have to be world beaters to beat them. Their own fan board is very worried with how their secondary will hold up against our offense. They have played no one this year. Weber? decent FCS team. UCLA, and NMSU are dumpster fire FBS teams. If we score 3 or more touchdowns we win this game. Agnew is absolutely awful. So I guess the big question is do you think JLove and company will be limited to only two scores?

Our up tempo style should limit what they can do defensively, as far as all the different looks. I think we can cause some problems for them especially having some extra time to throw in a few wrinkles-- Hot Sauce on a jet sweep.. & possibly some screens.
We know they are going to try to keep us off the field with their Running game and slow it down to eat clock, hopefully the D can keep them behind the Chains.

I like the match ups. Their run defense is solid, but their pass D might have some holes, and that's where I think we are strongest right now. On the other side we are also worried about our pass D, but they tend to run more, and I think our front 7 (or 6?) showed an ability to stop the run by the 2nd half of the Wake Forest game.

FWIW - Coach Rocky Long agrees with your assessment. He says almost exactly that at around the @3:30 mark in his breakdown of the Utah State vs Aztecs game aired earlier today.

Coach Rocky said some nice things about our team at media days this year. He mentioned he thought we were the team to beat this year. You can tell he respects what we can do and that is probably very prepared for it though.

Rocky says lots of things. They are also a "spread offense" now.

I wouldn't be surprised if he takes a page from BYU vs USC and goes with a 3 or 4 man front and drops everyone else. I get the feeling they don't have much respect or knowledge of our OL or RB's. He mentions they are good but he seems far more concerned about our QB and WR's. I would love nothing more than to control the trenches in this one.

We have the opportunity to control the trenches if we play hard enough. The Aztec offensive line returns as many starters (2) as we do and the Aztecs defensive line is less experienced than our 4-man front.

Oregon Grad Transfer and the two's have seen lots of action and improves by the week. Our O line is solid- D line is coached by Brady Hoke and plays beyond their level of talent.

Aztecs always play up or down to the level of competition (last 4 of 2018 being an exception), expect a street fight Saturday.

IIRC he was the D" coordinator for his first year or two at SDSU. Seemed to me he was the de facto heir apparent for their Head Coach position from the time he was hired. A very proven and solid coach oozing with talent. He will have some surprises for us on Saturday, just look at his interviewing demeanor. Clever man he is.
