OOC Schedule Pieces

Post by lcrasmus » July 26th, 2019, 9:24 am

Looks like we've got Florida in December. Part of the Orange Bowl Classic. 2 SEC teams this year.

Per CBS most recent poll, Florida is #9, St. Marys #24 and LSU #25.

ESPN has Florida #4, St Marys #19 and LSU #24

That's a recipe for a good resume, if we take care of MWC and grab at least 2 wins out of these 3.

This is fantastic. I think we can win the St. Mary's game. The other 2 would be big upsets if we were to win them. Either way the LSU and Florida games are neutral court games against sure fire quad 1 teams. So long as we play well and don't get blown out of the water they will not hurt the resume.

It’ll be nice to have so many people who hate our opponent at a game that many of us won’t make it to.

2 SEC teams?

LSU in Jamaica.

Good point on having FSU and USF fans there.

So is this held in Miami? A trip there in December would be great.

Interesting that there are 3 Florida teams and Utah State. It's like replacing Weber at the Beehive Classic with George Mason.

What if our football team makes the Orange Bowl as the G5 representative, then we could have both the football and basketball team in town for a VERY Merry Christmas season!

The last time we played Florida was back in the 1999-2000 season in the first round of the Maui Invitational. If I remember correctly, we led for most of the game and had many chances to win it at the end but somehow pulled defeat from the jaws of victory. We ended up losing 60-58.

https://www.usustats.com/boxscores/242

That Florida team had future NBA players Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller on it.

We ended up beating Chaminade and USC in the next couple of rounds of that tournament.

Given our preseason position, only the Florida game would be an upset. We are consistently ranked above LSU and St Mary’s. Now having said that, all games will be very tough and we could lose all 3. LSU I’m Jamaica might be our best shot at winning one of these. At St Mary’s will be very tough though we did matchup well with them last year. Florida will be very difficult but will really give us ‘Tournament’ game experience. Their size and athleticism is what we will see in the tournament and we need more opportunities to prepare ourselves. This is a great one along with LSU.

Also, I was looking for the dates for these games we are discussing. Does anybody have them handy? What’s our schedule look like right now with dates?

LSU finished the season ranked 15th last year. They have great coaching and players and it will be difficult to win that game. Hopefully we can pull it off.

Great opportunity! Shaping up to be a good schedule. It’d be nice to get a decent home game or two, but “neutral” site games are the next best thing.

That was a fun game to hear and a tough loss. We had a bunch of new pieces on the team like Daniels and Rock and Jorssen. That Florida team ended up losing in the national championship game.

This is exactly why I didn't hate the idea of facing Iowa State in Des Moines, or any other team close to their home. Cause a game close to our opponent's home is also close to the home of fans who hate them.

Just so everyone is aware, there is a cruise leaving out of Miami on Monday that comes back the Friday before the game.

Anyone know anything about getting tickets to this shindig? I went to their site and added my name to a waiting list since tickets aren't released yet. Is it likely USU will get a share of tickets to sell?

Wasn’t there talk of a game against an Arizona team being in the works, or am I crazy?

From what I understand, there are possibly 2 home games and one more neutral site game in the works.

It should also be pointed out that Rhode Island released yesterday that they are playing LSU on 11/22. We originally thought that USU was playing them on 11/24. No idea who's actually correct right now.

I would imagine our SID office messed this one up.

It's definitely a reasonable assumption. Rhode Island did also make another mistake in their release saying that they would be playing either Utah State or North Texas for the 2nd round but this isn't a bracketed tournament and the match-ups are already set so who knows.

Coach Smith mentioned at the Scottsdale roadshow that they were working on a game with some Arizona ties. I don’t remember if he specifically said in Arizona or against an Arizona team or both. But he also said it was close to a done deal and we would probably hear about it soon... so maybe it fell through or maybe it’s just taking longer to finalize than he thought or maybe his idea of soon is different than mine? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There should be at least one other neutral site game against a P5 team. Possibly in Houston.

So would it be against Houston or against another team (P5) in neutral venue?

I took it as a sarcastic response to your speculation that the Arizona school may be Grand Canyon University, though I may be WAY off base. In fairness, Grand Canyon wouldn't be a bad addition to the schedule. The Antelopes have had a winning record for each of the past 5 seasons and have been either in the top 100 or just outside of it each of the last 4 seasons.

Agreed. My comment was somewhat facetious since the only Arizona schools that were being mentioned were PAC-12 schools, but I agree... Grand Canyon wouldn't be a bad get. But I have zero insider knowledge on who we might be scheduling.

I wonder how everyone will react when they announce a neutral site game against NAU :)
