Re: Smith in no hurry to use last schollie
I was wondering why weren't using the last scholarship. It's about time someone wrote something about it.ROLLEOVERHORDEMAN wrote: ↑June 13th, 2019, 9:22 pmhttps://usustatesman.com/utah-state-bas ... -bischoff/
Do we "recruit" walkons or do they come over here and audition? Just curious to how that works.
Why editing is important
This is an instance of the article saying the exact opposite of what was intended:
Also, I know that Fakira has left the team, the school, and the country. But has this been reported anywhere in the traditional press? It’s interesting that this detailed article was written without mentioning the reason for one scholarship to be open.It is far from the realm of possibility for Smith to bring in an impact player in the middle of or even late in the summer. Neemias Queta signed with Utah State on August 29, a mere two months prior to the 2018 season opening exhibition game against Evergreen State.

Re: Smith in no hurry to use last schollie
Smith sure has a different attitude toward that last scholarship that Stew did. Often thought that Stew brought in kids that didn't contribute with the last one.
Re: Smith in no hurry to use last schollie
Yes, he would run one or two or three or four players off the team and replace them with new players who would be on the roster until the end of the next season when the cycle repeated (if they lasted that long).
The only late signee who I can remember contributing at a high level for Stew was Chaz Spicer.

I don't know what you determine to be the traditional press, but Smith himself said that Fakira went back to Australia and is no longer on the team in one of his interviews on 1280 the zone with Scotty G.dogie wrote: ↑June 13th, 2019, 10:41 pmThis is an instance of the article saying the exact opposite of what was intended:

Re: Smith in no hurry to use last schollie
Both. We sometimes offer "preferred walkon" spots to players while we are out recruiting. One example of that was Quinn Taylor. We also hold open tryouts where players can actually try out on campus.Blitz79 wrote: ↑June 13th, 2019, 9:58 pmI was wondering why weren't using the last scholarship. Preston Medlin also was a late sign, but point taken I like Smith’s strategy much better.dogie wrote: ↑June 13th, 2019, 10:46 pmYes, he would run one or two or three or four players off the team and replace them with new players who would be on the roster until the end of the next season when the cycle repeated (if they lasted that long).

You guys remember that one guy Smith signed late in August one year? Neemias Queta was his name I think.nswaggie wrote: ↑June 14th, 2019, 8:02 amPreston Medlin also was a late sign, but point taken I like Smith’s strategy much better.dogie wrote: ↑June 13th, 2019, 10:46 pmYes, he would run one or two or three or four players off the team and replace them with new players who would be on the roster until the end of the next season when the cycle repeated (if they lasted that long).

I don't know if I'm considered traditional press but I reported Fakira's departure over a month or so ago.dogie wrote: ↑June 13th, 2019, 10:41 pmThis is an instance of the article saying the exact opposite of what was intended:

Re: Smith in no hurry to use last schollie
I completely agree with Smith's reasons for exercising patience with the last scholarship, but it would be nice if he would use it soon so we would have something new to talk about.

Re: Smith in no hurry to use last schollie
Is the SLC media calling Virginia or for not releasing this kid? Now he has to sit out a year before he can play.

Re: Smith in no hurry to use last schollie
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that you always have to sit a year when you transfer in football or men's basketball regardless of whether or not the previous school grants a release. The release just allows the player to be on scholarship during the year that he is sitting out.

Re: Smith in no hurry to use last schollie
Yes. Basically, the creation of the portal was to create a way for players to legally publicize their intention to transfer. If a player is in the portal, then he has already received his release from his previous school and he is free to transfer wherever he chooses.StanfordAggie wrote: ↑June 14th, 2019, 6:54 pmSomeone can correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that you always have to sit a year when you transfer in football or men's basketball regardless of whether or not the previous school grants a release. Re: Why editing is important
I would more consider you to be the new media that is making the traditional press obsolete. And, your reporting is why I knew that Fakira has left the team, the school and the country.aggies22 wrote: ↑June 14th, 2019, 9:18 amI don't know if I'm considered traditional press but I reported Fakira's departure over a month or so ago.dogie wrote: ↑June 13th, 2019, 10:41 pmThis is an instance of the article saying the exact opposite of what was intended:

Re: Why editing is important
I take this back. Smith has not brought in an impact player in the middle or late summer along the lines of what the article was discussing because the final scholarship player will sit out a year. It was a contorted way of saying it, but the article was correct.dogie wrote: ↑June 13th, 2019, 10:41 pmThis is an instance of the article saying the exact opposite of what was intended:

https://usustatesman.com/utah-state-agg ... o-anthony/ Final scholarship (I think) - he will sit out a year according to the article.
Please correct if any of that is wrong.

Correct. Marco got the final open scholarship. There is a possibility that one or two more walk-ons will be added.JSHarvey wrote: ↑June 16th, 2019, 3:22 pmhttps://usustatesman.com/utah-state-agg ... o-anthony/ Final scholarship (I think) - he will sit out a year according to the article.

I think all 12 eligible players will play throughout the season.

Thanks...I believe Alford is looking to have 11 play with two transfers sitting out. I suspect he will play more guys than Muss did,
Nevada still has 2 open scholarships to fill..
