Re: Hoops Signing Day Central
Thanks for the update, aggies22. Our depth chart seems a little odd next year. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Quinn Taylor and Dwayne Brown have been huge as "stretch 4's" for us. Next year we're hoping Anderson can fill that void but outside of that we really don't that and we have 4 centers and a plethora of talented Guards.
(I know these positions are fluid and can be rotated).
C) Neemias Queta, Ben Fakira, Klay Stall, Roche Grootfaam
F) Alphonso Anderson, Liam McChesney, Justin Bean
F) Brock Miller, Diogo Brito
G) Sam Merrill, RayQuan Evans
G) John Knight iii, Crew Ainge, Tauriawn Knight, Abel Porter

If Evans is borderline 4 star (rumored), perhaps he and Miller would swap spots on your list.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑December 4th, 2018, 11:41 amThanks for the update, aggies22. Glad to hear RayQuan is still solid! He would be a great addition from what I've seen.

Re: Hoops Signing Day Central
I actually think McChesney is a traditional "stretch 4". Alphonso is basically a Dwayne Brown replacement - very similar size and style of play. McChesney can really shoot it. I don't think he can put it on the floor like Dwayne can, but he'll definitely space the floor with his shooting.Pacobag wrote: ↑December 4th, 2018, 2:17 pmIf Evans is borderline 4 star (rumored), perhaps he and Miller would swap spots on your list.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑December 4th, 2018, 11:41 amThanks for the update, aggies22. Re: Hoops Signing Day Central
According to verbalcommits.com we have no more interest in RayQuan Evans.
According to this article in the CDA Press, Evans decommitted in mid December.

And said this......“I really liked the program at Utah State,” Evans said. “I just wanted to see what else was out there. I just wanted to see if another opportunity presented itself, or if it doesn’t. I’m just trying to see what’s out there.”

Re: Hoops Signing Day Central
This is all true. Evans was hoping to see if a P5 offer materialized while keeping us on the back burner. As of a month or so ago, he was still telling the coaching staff we are his number 1 school. I haven't even bothered checking on Evans since.Donald_Sullivan wrote: ↑February 10th, 2019, 11:06 amAccording to verbalcommits.com we have no more interest in RayQuan Evans.

I heard at the game the other night that USU is moving on from Evans. If he decides to sign with us, great, but we're not screwing around with him anymore. Ball is in his court now.

I'm pretty sure I cleared up all this RayQuan Evans business early in January. I'll give you a hint where Verbal Commits gets most of it's Utah State information...... it's me.
Re: Hoops Signing Day Central
So aggies22, is there anyone on the radar for next season or are we all out of scholarships?

If the current numbers hold true, we are OUT of scholarships for the 2019-20 season. There are also NO open offers out to any recruits.

Interesting to note that Liam McChesney is the highest rated recruit currently signed by any MWC basketball program (though if Jalen McDaniels's younger brother Jaden signs with SDSU, he would be the highest rated BY FAR).

Yes. It means that at least one member of the current team that is an underclassman will not be on the 2019-20 team.usubobcat wrote: ↑February 27th, 2019, 1:45 pmDoes anything change with the Bairstow news?aggies22 wrote: ↑February 25th, 2019, 4:37 pmIf the current numbers hold true, we are OUT of scholarships for the 2019-20 season. Re: Hoops Signing Day Central
Yes, it will have to be an underclassman. The spots that will be vacated by the graduating seniors (Dwayne Brown & Quin Taylor) are already going to be filled by Alphonso Anderson and Liam McChesney. Both of those players signed with the Aggies during the early signing period in November. As far as guesses go? I think we all know who the primary suspects are.Blue42 wrote: ↑February 27th, 2019, 5:57 pmSorry if this has already been discussed, but is there a reason it would have to be an underclassman? So underclassman meaning currently a junior or younger? To me, I always thought underclassmen were just freshmen and sophomores, so I might’ve misunderstood what you were saying.aggies22 wrote: ↑February 27th, 2019, 6:29 pmYes, it will have to be an underclassman. During one of the games, one of the announcers mentioned that Abel was about to graduate. IF that is true, couldn't Abel Porter potentially be moved to an academic scholarship when he graduates?

I believe USUBlue has said that if a kid was a walk-on and then he is given a scholarship he can't have his scholarship rescinded for any reason and still remain on the team. If Porter and Bean are to remain on the hoops team at Utah State, they have to remain on scholarship as well.

Weren't the scholarships given to Porter and Bean for this season only? Like a year - to - year scholarship?aggies22 wrote:I believe USUBlue has said that if a kid was a walk-on and then he is given a scholarship he can't have his scholarship rescinded for any reason and still remain on the team. Is it possible a player has qualified/earned an academic scholarship and can free up one for athletics?

Scholarships are year to year but if you remove their scholarship then they can no longer be on the team.

Re: Hoops Signing Day Central
I believe you can take a player off of scholarship (essentially moving a scholarship player to a walk-on), but they can never be given an athletic scholarship again at that point. I remember a story a few years back of a player who was going to be a senior and gave up his scholarship, paying his own way for his senior year as a walk-on so that they could sign someone else that was going to push them over the hump to compete for a championship. I'll see if I can find that story. But I believe once you've pulled the scholarship you can't give it back.ProvoAggie wrote: ↑February 28th, 2019, 12:29 pmScholarships are year to year but if you remove their scholarship then they can no longer be on the team.
We've had this same conversation about 5 times over the last 10 years or so. I could probably just dig up the old thread as well...

Re: Hoops Signing Day Central
Went back through the board and found a couple posts referencing this situation. Here's one from USUBlue:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=19272&p=127955&hilit=5th#p127955
I believe he is correct that a player can have his athletic scholarship taken away, but they cannot be shifted from athletic scholarship to another type of scholarship. At that point they have to pay their own way if they want to walk on at that same school. This is very rare (because the player has to go from free schooling to expensive schooling) and I have only read of one case of it happening.
Now, if a player is a "walk-on" of a non-traditional nature where they have an academic scholarship and are playing on the basketball team, they can be awarded an athletic scholarship which often times provides more perks than an academic scholarship. But then you can't shift them back to any other type of scholarship. We had a few examples of this during the Stew years (Clifford, Collette and possibly others that I can't identify off the top of my head). I don't know if Bean or Porter had any type of academic scholarship or financial aid, but now that they've been awarded an athletic scholarship they are taking up one of the 13 slots. If we revoke it they'll have to transfer or pay their way without any help.
That is my understanding. I wish I had it in writing somewhere because this comes up a lot.

Re: Hoops Signing Day Central
North Idaho just won their tournament. It wasn't even close. Not a lot of talent in that league.
Rayquan Evans had something like 34 points and Alphonso Anderson around 25. Anderson's game is similar to Brown's. Hopefully the good Brown and not the out of control Brown. Evan's is fast, very athletic, a good passer and very aggressive with the ball. He would be a good get.
