The consultant was Joe Cravens.hipsterdoofus21 wrote:Not unless Duryea has a big man recruit and true PG hidden somewhere.aggieaggie wrote:I have a prediction for Brownjeans to mark, 10 months from now we will all be happy with this hire.
We wasted 3 months of recruiting to hire the guy right next to Stew. Why not just save the money given to the consulting firm and give it to Duryea back in January. I don't mind the hire so much as the perception that we settled.
Re: Espn says its Duryea
If this is a serious post, I don't think I've ever seen such BS during my 4 years reading and posting on this board. How can someone who is a true Aggie fan, through thick and thin, look at the Athletics Director who has done more for this department than any other administrator in the history of the University, and say he's just mailing it in because you're not happy with the hire (also based on speculation that he is even going to leave in the first place). What a pathetic perspective. Scott is just sending a huge "screw you" to the school he's dedicated the last 10 years of his life to, and built his legacy with. Duryea may not be the popular choice among fans because naturally we want something new and exciting. I'm part of the group of fans who would love to see Connor wearing Aggie blue, but he's not coming. So I'm gonna trust Scott Barnes (who has never let me down before), Stew Morrill, and just about every other person I've talked to who is close with the basketball program and gives high praises to Duryea.Imakeitrain wrote:Scott Barnes absolutely quit on us.

Re: Duryea
I like Duryea fine and I appreciate what he's done for USU basketball, but the program had a great opportunity to capitalize on the situation and revive the program. Hiring someone from the existing staff is not going to ignite the fanbase. New blood, new recruiting, and fresh faces were needed to generate some buzz. This just looks like we couldn't find anyone else after conducting a nationwide search, and couldn't look worse for us. The school would've been better off announcing Duryea as the successor back in January than parading out our grand search plans and settling back on the guy wedged next to Stew.

I would have picked Jones over Duryea -- at least Jones has an energy level to get behind. I will not support Duryea unless he finishes Top 3 in the MWC and then I hope his contract is very short so we can replace him quickly. I think the simple fact that we have not done anything in years and we pick someone from that staff to take over, makes fans like me a little disaapointed.
I am hopefully wrong but just can't stand the slow pace, "look at the big card" offense. No one enjoys watching that or playing in that kind of offense that is so micromanaged. Hopefully Duryea brings some changes in that aspect.

^ this. The sucking noise you just heard is the excitement and enthusiasm of most Aggie fans leaving the room. Same 'ol, same 'ol. Duryea may be a nice guy, but so is Roger Reed and I wouldn't take him as a HC for my grandson's junior Jazz team. I couldn't be less pleased about this unless it was for Rod Tueller to come back.hipsterdoofus21 wrote:I like Duryea fine and I appreciate what he's done for USU basketball, but the program had a great opportunity to capitalize on the situation and revive the program. Re: Espn says its Duryea
Completely serious. He's going off to elite 8 games and has his foot out the door to leave USU while having a prolonged hiring process to go with someone that was right there all along. He did great things for USU, I never said he didn't. But he quit on us. He appears to have been more concerned with the NCAA and his next stop than he was getting the best man for the job to come to Logan. So we settled because of what appears to be a lack of due diligence.bleu wrote:If this is a serious post, I don't think I've ever seen such BS during my 4 years reading and posting on this board. Re: Espn says its Duryea
This is the same crap that happened when Dave Arslanian was hired to replace John L -- simply a joke back then and a joke today. I guess after 3 years of Duryea not getting to the NCAA tournament (Top 3), he'll have to be fired which will be ugly. What a wasted process Barnes engaged in.bleu wrote:If this is a serious post, I don't think I've ever seen such BS during my 4 years reading and posting on this board. Re: Espn says its Duryea
My goodness this board can be unbearable.
I think Duryea can and will be a great head coach. Just because he is coming from the same coaching staff doesn't mean it will be exactly the same. Duryea will bring his own personality, style, etc to the team. He's paid his dues and deserves the shot. Former players all love and endorse him. Way to write the guy off before even giving him his well-deserved opportunity.

Re: Espn says its Duryea
Everyone loves Stew. Duryea has been his #1 assistant for the better part of a decade. While not the sexiest of hires, if true, there, are several former players who credit much of Stew's success to him.
It's obvious that there are a bunch of folks here whose pussies are hurting right now, but if it turns out that Duryea is the guy, give him a freaking chance, instead of throwing a (I can't express myself without swearing) fit like a bunch of spoiled little b!tches.

Re: Espn says its Duryea
The only metric that counts is not having been to the NCAA tourney since 2011 and only winning in it once- ever. Another reason to think this was a bad choice is the lack of excitement in the Spectrum. I don't argue he isn't good at basketball, but when the team isn't playing well for 4 years in a row, you need to make organizational changes.JonnyCienPesos wrote:Give us some detail about what makes TD such a bad coach. Might I ask you for a quick favor? Look into your crystal ball and PM me the outcome of next year's NCAA tournament. $1000 on a 67 game parlay would pay out handsomely.USUBlue wrote:I would have picked Jones over Duryea -- at least Jones has an energy level to get behind. Re: Espn says its Duryea
That's the problem Duryea has No personality -- he is "coach speak" perfected. Boring on the bench, boring in interviews, and boring to his players. In the last week, I've spoken to 2 players -- they don't want Duryea (even though he asked for them to support him to Barnes). Both said Jones would be a better head coach.TheOpportunity wrote:My goodness this board can be unbearable.

Duryea will never make USU a Top 3 program in the MWC -- average recruiter at best.

Re: Duryea
With you, with a caveat: if we'd landed Brad Underwood or Tommy Connor and started next season off like we did this one, the "buzz" would fade in a hurry. And if Duryea manages to build on a surprisingly good season with some early wins next year, we won't spend much time worrying about who we didn't get. Fans are fickle, and Aggie fans no less than anyone else.AgMac wrote:Spot on. I am much more of an Aggie fanatic than most of our fanbase. Also, I can remember people complaining when Dennehy was hired. Talk about fair weather, whiney fans. Some never gave him a chance.
Who cares if fair weather fans stop supporting the team.
