I wish Sakho had stuck around

Post by hipsterdoofus21 » January 9th, 2025, 9:31 am

I think he could've been a great rim runner in the Calhoun system and he was athletic enough to rotate and close out in the match up zone. We could sure use the depth. Plus with the Juco rule changes he'd be getting back another year or two of eligibility.

He was already coming to Utah State because of Ryan Odom, he hung around despite Danny Sprinkle coming in, I don't think he had any interest in seeing who the 3rd head coach in 4 years was going to be.

But either way he was going to be with a new coach no? He could've landed at a Sam Houston State level school anytime he wanted. To bad he didn't wait around to meet with Calhoun.

I'd take Sakho over Gateretse, but the real miss was Carter Welling. He's the post presence this team so desperately needs

Oh yeah, he would've been a great fit too. Welling has good post skills and plays with so much energy it would be like having another Templin to throw out there.

It’s really hard to nitpick anything at 15-1, but if there is one nit to pick, hindsight is we maybe offer the scholarship that went to Stosic to Welling’s brother to get Carter here.

Reality is, we may have another chance at this this offseason.

If that’s truly what prevented Carter from coming here, I’m baffled. That kid is clearly better than at least a couple players occupying spots on this team. Maybe the belief was Aubin would be better.

Edit: I know we have our sights set on an impact portal big this offseason. I wouldn’t mind going after Welling again.

Once his brother graduates, I'll bet Carter hits the portal again. Their parents wanting them to play together played a huge part in the decision to play at Utah Valley.

Couldn't afford in state tuition at USU for the less talented brother?

If Utah State has an open spot and Welling is in the portal, he should be the first one to pursue.

When does he graduate?

The older brother is a junior so guessing one more here. But he also is getting some mins in Orem. Maybe he could contribute as well. Getting welling the younger would be huge for next year

We offered the older Welling a preferred walk-on and Utah Valley offered BOTH a schollie. That's what they took.

The older Welling improved but still below schollie offer

I guess I would have taken both in hindsight. The older might not be happy with minimal mins though.

We offered to take both kids, Carter, on a schollie and Hayden as a preferred walk-on.
