Match up zone

Post by hipsterdoofus21 » January 7th, 2025, 10:10 pm

Switching to man helped get their three point shooting under control. I wonder why we didn't go to that sooner. We even got a few steals out of it. I'm tired of watching JAGs get hot against us. Is our Match up zone the issue?

We are struggling with it of late for sure. Not sure what’s causing it. I do wish we’d play more man than we do.

Part of it is just bad luck. Teams hitting tough, contested shots at the end of the shot clock… it’s happened a ton with SJSU and Fresno

I too noticed that we went to man late and we went on a small run that out the game away. I’m concerned now that mediocre teams have abused us in different ways.

We are getting everyone's best shot night after night.

That is the price of being on top. Everyone wants to beat the top dawg. Fresno follows up their effort against us with a 20+ point loss at CSU last night.

Honestly, it doesn't even matter besides the effect on our NET.

And I bet we continue to do so as long as we stay ranked. I'm ok with getting every teams best shot as long as we keep winning. Makes for entertaining basketball and will help our guys get better!

At least three of those 3ptrs were shot out of their backsides. Crazy they went in. Even 2 luck shot misses and we win by expected margin of 10.

Late in the game, SJSU gets an inbound with 2 second on the shot clock and tosses it out to midcourt. How many of us were expecting that shot to go in? I was based on the luck so far in the game.

Also, Vaihola looked good. Too bad for SJSU that there were at least 3 times I counted that he rolled to the basket, was wide open, and the guard through it 6 feet above his head or 4 feet in front of him. Maybe good defense altered the pass, maybe SJSU isn't that good.

I have not been a fan of the match up but in fairness it has worked well for us. I was glad to see us go to a man defense and I hope we keep doing so from time to time. I worry about tourney games if we play a match up all game, our legs are shot in a back to back against good competition.

And not always playing the zone well. Requires a ton of energy. When we execute, it works

I have no reason to think this other than it’s been thrown around on this board. But I wonder if the team has been dealing with sickness the past couple weeks. Their ability to cover in that zone is not quite as sharp lately. You are absolutely correct, it takes a ton of energy to play it well.

I was absolutely expecting a full court shot to go in from clear back at the baseline…

I was thinking last night that Ian looked like he had mono or something, and he’s looked that way since the Nevada game.

San Jose and Fresno threw in a few tough shots, but for the most part, it was bad defense. They gave a lot of open looks (tons) and San Jose and Fresno knocked them down.

Latrell Davis popped off 20 points. He's a bench player who typically has fewer than 10.
Vaihola gave them a lot of second chances as well. It thought he might have had 20+, but apparently it was only 7.

I think they have some tired legs especially Ian and Mason who play 30+ minutes per game. We have not had a lot of rest the last few weeks and have played 4 of 5 games on the road. Important thing is they are finding ways to win. The zone has not looked good the last 2 games but the St. Mary's, Nev and 2nd half of SDSU the zone was lights out.

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think the match up zone causes our team to get tired. Man D would create more running around, IMO. I think what gets them tired is our fast paced offense and full court press.

Zone gets exposed when teams make their open 3s, which will come if they move the ball effectively. We benefit quite a bit from the steals we get from running the zone form transition points. I like that coach can gauge how the opposing team is shooting and switch the D for times like last night.

The 20+ you’re feeling was probably his rebounds….

They got the ball to high post a bunch on the zone. Good things for them followed. Big basket last night for both teams. Fresno/SJSU coaches did a good job preparing. Every other team will follow suit. We are in trouble if next teams just pop that mid range high post shot and hit it consistently. That will open things up even more. Not saying anything our coaches/players don't already know.

Dude with radioactive shoes who threw down our guy and stole ball for layup at beginning of 2nd half, then manhandled our big guy down the court next play and pulled him to the ground, was playing out of his mind. Refs really liked him for some reason.
