Conner Mantz runs American record half marathon

Post by Gidbob » January 19th, 2025, 8:56 am

59:17 in Houston. Took down a record standing since 2007. I know he's a BYU guy and because of that I'm not supposed to say this, but I like Conner Mantz.

Several people, including athletes, have spouses who have competed at BYU or USU.

That is quite a feat. I ran a half marathon a few years ago, and it certainly wasn't that fast. He is one of the top 2-3 American distance runners right now.

Half marathon and marathon he's certainly number 1 American. If we count 5k-10k as distance I'd put him number 2 behind Grant Fisher, and if we go down to 1500 he's behind Hocker, Nuguse, and arguably Kessler. Where he is in current standings among American distance runners depends on how broadly you define "distance runners"

He did go to Sky View so there's that.

Ed Eyestone has probably sent more athletes to the Olympics in distance running than any other coach.

I don't blame anyone that has those aspirations for taking scholarship offers to be coached by him. USU is certainly a solid program in its own right, but as much as BYU wants their premier sport to be football or men's basketball, the best athletic program is it's distance running program, and it isn’t really even that close. They do most of it with kids from the Intermountain region.

From a conversation with his mother, Utah State never called, let alone offered.

That about sums up the effort of most of our programs when it comes to recruiting the valley. With the exception of Manny Martins. If a young lady is good enough to play at our level, she isn't getting out of town.

Crazy, he won a State Championship, NCAA championship, just set an American record, and qualified for the Olympics all while growing up just a few miles from USU's campus and having a parent as a school employee, and no one even contacted him.

It was a different coach, but this is literally like not recruiting Merlin Olsen for football as far as how rare of a talent of a runner like this is right in your own backyard.

I like the current staff's emphasis on recruiting primarily Utah and eastern Idaho. With how good Utah distance is right now, most of the team should be from Utah, especially on the men's side.

The Green Canyon girls team was quite good this year, and the three quality seniors are all staying home.

Well, previous coaches were more concerned with playing with his tractors than actually coaching...

The Mens 1500 at the Olympics this last summer with Hocker coming from behind to shock everyone was one of the highlights of the Olympics. Especially when Nuguse came up and knocked that mouthy Norwegian that was the favorite off the podium. :golfclap:

or recruiting. I had a legit D1 kid that wanted to come to Utah State and he couldn't get a phone call or email returned. He ended up at Utah Valley where he set a bunch of school records and won a few conference titles for them.

Sounds about right. When I was trying to get schools to look at me, the recruiting contact changed like 5 times in the space of my senior year. At least Artie and Sarah can actually recruit.

Haven't been on this website in a bit, but that was by far my favorite race to watch. Ingebrigtsen and Kerr going almost a year of trash taking each other only for neither to win and Ingebrigtsen to not even medal at the hands of Hocker and for Ingebrigtsen Nuguse was absolutely glorious to watch. I spent almost an entire year anticipating it, and it not only lived up to, but exceeded the hype.

Conner Mantz is an awesome guy. He's always to willing to come run or talk to the Sky View cross country team whenever he's in the valley. Very humble for how much he has accomplished.
