SOS outrage disconnect
To me the biggest disconnect between the Alabama/SEC fans outraged about SOS and the committee is that the outraged fans evaluate SMU as if their loss to Clemson actually happened, and the committee evaluates SMU as if it didn't. If SMU had drawn Clemson in the regular season and lost, and Miami won all the games they were supposed to win and beat Clemson in the ACC title game, Miami would get the auto bid, and Alabama would get in over SMU. I really believe that to be the case. There's a little bit of acknowledgement about the committee not really counting the SMU loss to Clemson, but not much.

If the extra game can guarantee you a spot in the playoff or even a top four seed by winning, then why shouldn’t losing come with a punishment? Specially for SMU, the game gave them the opportunity to finally beat a ranked team and they lost. That should carry weight.

Re: SOS outrage disconnect
Because the extra game was earned and would set a terrible precedent if it was treated as a regular season loss (why would SMU play in their conference championship game, going forward, if they're penalized for a loss in the game and thus precluded from playing for the national championship?). Conference championships would become meaningless, they'd be skipped by every reasonable team, and TV revenues would plunge.BamaAggie wrote: ↑December 11th, 2024, 10:53 amIf the extra game can guarantee you a spot in the playoff or even a top four seed by winning, then why shouldn’t losing come with a punishment? Once you lose to a bad Oklahoma team by 21 points, you should be banished from college football forever. You're lucky that the committee merely left Alabama out of the college football playoff for one year.

I would argue SMU did get punished because of their seed. But unless they got stomped in the conference championship game, I have no issue with keeping them in the playoffs as an at-large versus a team with three losses that finished tied for third in its conference with a slew of other teams. This is especially true when prior to the conference championship game SMU was solidly in the playoff field with its ranking.

Not only should it not be punishment to lose in the conference championship, being in the championship games should be a hard requirement to get in. Get in a conference or lose the opportunity. Also would help kill the push for super conferences.

Bama, Old Miss and South Carolina, and everyone else that didn't paly in a championship game also lost that game. Easiest to view that SMU lost the game, but Bama also didn't win the SEC game.
Biggest issue I have is what looks to be the most favorable path for Penn State, who did lose their game vs Oregon. Think everyone agrees give the top 5 champions a seat at the table, but not a bye.
