No way we should be an 8 seed. Disappointing to say the least. Will hopefully at least get a win in Logan! When will we know what day and time? (Or do we already)

Re: SOCCER HOSTING VS WASHINGTON
It shouldn’t count but BYU history has to have played a part with committee.
Sub 20 RPI. Wins vs TT, BYU, Pepperdine should have led to better seed. Pepperdine got a 7 and we beat them 4-0. Proximity in early rounds plays a part in this as well I think unfortunately. Plus MWC isn’t good soccer conference. Thought team did great with tough schedule. Going to have to do that going forward as they lost 1 game and were awarded an 8 seed 4 spots below where RPI would slot them
Girls got no respect. Hopefully they take it out on Washington and then Mississippi St.

An 8 seed is asinine. 17 in RPI.
Washington isn’t a bad first round draw, but Mississippi State after that is brutal.

NCAA site shows they play Thursday at 4 ET so 2 MST
Wisconsin and Georgia better seeds and were way further down on RPI. Same story power conferences get better seeds

Re: SOCCER HOSTING VS WASHINGTON
Well that is disappointing. USU had no marquee wins and some questionable draws/loss. But I'm still surprised that they dropped us to a #8 seed when we easily beat three at-large teams that were seeded as high or higher. But the team that really should be angry is Mississippi State, who is going to have to play us in the second round. That's an absolutely brutal draw for a #1 seed. The two teams with the highest win totals in the country are likely to meet in the second round. (USU is the only 18-win team in the country, and I believe Mississippi State is the only 17-win team.) I hope USU makes the selection committee look really foolish in about a week from now. (No disrespect to Washington. They are a good team and that game won't be a gimme. But USU will be a strong favorite.)
I'm thinking very seriously about driving to Starkville assuming USU takes care of business in the first round. That would a long drive for me, but it is close enough to be doable.

Exactly right - tough draw for USU. Brutal draw for Mississippi State IMO.StanfordAggie wrote: ↑November 11th, 2024, 4:58 pmWell that is disappointing. Re: SOCCER HOSTING VS WASHINGTON
What qualifies as a marquee win? We beat BYU, Pepperdine, and Texas Tech, the three best teams on our schedule. How high does a team need to be to be considered marquee?StanfordAggie wrote: ↑November 11th, 2024, 4:58 pmWell that is disappointing. USU had no marquee wins and some questionable draws/loss. Re: SOCCER HOSTING VS WASHINGTON
Our best wins were against #26 BYU, #39 Pepperdine, and #41 Texas Tech (based on the RPI). That's solid, but that's still three borderline NCAA teams and zero wins against the top 25. We haven't proven that we can beat a legitimate title contender, and the NCAA usually likes to see that type of marquee win before it hands out high seeds. Especially when we failed to get wins against some bad teams.flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑November 11th, 2024, 7:39 pmWhat qualifies as a marquee win? But it's not worth getting upset about. There are no easy games in the NCAA tournament (with the possible exception of first round games against low major auto qualifiers). And soccer in particular is a low scoring game that is prone to upsets. My guess is that the computers will say that USU has around a 30-40% chance of getting a win against Mississippi State (including winning in a PK shootout after a draw). Realistically, our best case scenario for a round two game would be a neutral field match against a #4 or #5 seed, which we might have a 60% chance of winning.
So I prefer to see this as a great opportunity rather than a screw job. If USU beats Mississippi State next week, every article about NCAA women's soccer will be talking about this MWC team with mostly local players that came out of nowhere to take down a #1 seed on their home field. And we will prove that we can compete with any team in the country. If we won a neutral game against a random #5 seed, nobody would notice or care. I personally would gladly accept a slightly lower chance of winning in round two given the potential upside of winning that game. And, to be clear, it's a very winnable game. It would only be a minor upset if USU were to win.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. USU will be favored against Washington, but they won't be a pushover. Picking up our first NCAA win in program history would already be a very successful season. I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

Re: SOCCER HOSTING VS WASHINGTON
I'm living in the Southeast these days. Google Maps says it is a nine hour drive. It's a little far, but if USU pulled off the upset, I would never forgive myself if I missed it. But work is slow right now, so it's very very tempting.Sl7vk wrote: ↑November 11th, 2024, 8:10 pmPalo Alto to Starkville ain’t bad.StanfordAggie wrote: ↑November 11th, 2024, 4:58 pmWell that is disappointing. Our #12, Werts i believe, playing the right side of the field, is really un-aggressive. The whole attacking group has feigned contact, been a half step behind.

Re: SOCCER HOSTING VS WASHINGTON
This is a strategy to neutralize a high powered offense, suck them deep into the teeth of the defense, with the hope of springing out on a counterattack on an opportune disposession. Do we have the speed to pull this off? Maybe. But our time of possession will be poor and we've seemed to thrive best with possession.
